Hi Wonder Woman! Trust you are well. Great visit if too, too brief. Have been meaning to send along some snaps but other than seeming to have been in a social whirlwind ever since returning I have now encountered a crippling problem! I cannot add files, specifically photos, to my messages! Just happened this morning when I went to add some of the shots I'd taken at UBC. Similar to a problem I encountered some time ago when trying to access my contacts list. I cannot click on the To or Cc or Bcc buttons without some sort of boxlike image appearing and obscuring the top left-hand corner of the message box. Further tasks are impossible to initiate.
 

I am hoping that unless you can provide me with a silver bullet I would like, obviously, to try asking someone in Library Systems to see if it can be resolved. This being the case, can you trouble-shoot and/or provide me with a phone number in Systems? (I'd like to talk to a real persona and cannot find any numbers as I guess such listings are for staff only.) Is Tracy still there? I had chatted with her many years ago when email system changed and she was very helpful. Anyway, any help you can provide/suggest will be much appreciated. Until then, no snapolas! However, on to less important matters. I can be reached at home but I can certainly call you if you let me know what might be the best time to reach you. I have installed Microsoft Silverlight to enable me to attach multiple attachments and that has worked well until this latest round of difficulties surfaced. I tried to self-diagnose, reading Working with Attachments, but could not find anything to help rectify problem as it presented itself or as I understood it. Any advice/help much appreciated. Hi Pat, It might be a browser issue.  Are you using Chrome?  Do you  see that some content is missing or you get the install Microsoft Silverlight message.  You reinstall and the issue still exists? If so, you may need to use another browser.  IE,  Firefox and Safari all support Silverlight content.  There
was a work around for older versions of Chrome (ver 42-44) but in version 45 or later there is no workaround for the issue: <https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/3058254/microsoft-silverlight-may-not-work-in-recent-versions-of-google-chrome>

I am currently using the latest version of Firefox, (and would prefer to continue to do so, if possible), but when I tried Safari I managed to get the dialogue box for attachments but could not invoke "Include Attachments" once files were selected, maximum of three. I tried to install or upgrade Silverlight and nothing changed. Might I be doing something wrong at this stage? System said latest version of Silverlight was installed so I'm at a loss.

Update! I maximized the Attachment dialogue box and realized that the "Attach" button was at the far right hand bottom corner, so not visible otherwise! However, while the process "works" it is very klunky, not to mention time consuming, so I'm wondering how I might get the advanced Silverlight program to work. Should I try to uninstall it and start all over again?

Once I had installed it the attachment problem disappeared, although I still cannot invoke the tabs for contact information. Not as much of a bother as I can cut and paste more easily than attaching photos. Also pleased to learn that problem wasn't necessarily something I was or wasn't doing, so thanks for that clarification!

Sara, Tracey and I chatted about a visit so you need to arrange to meet to plan the excursion, biking, wine-tasting and more! Yesterday, Lady Dar collected the most recent releases from two of our wine club memberships, Upper Bench and 8th Generation, and will hit Poplar Grove tomorrow. Black Widow, Terravista and Township 7 will be in a week or two. Hurry up and visit or we'll drink everything!

This evening's film is Mutluluk, "(English title: Bliss), a 2007 Turkish film directed by Abdullah Oğuz. Meryem (Özgü Namal), a young woman of about 17 years old, is believed to have been violated, and her village's customs call for her to be killed to restore honor and dignity to her family and village. A young, newly returned war veteran and son of the village leader, Cemal Murat Han, is ordered to take Meryem to Istanbul and kill her, but at the last minute he doesn't allow himself to complete the task and the two, now unable to ever return to their village, run away together. Eventually, they meet up with ex-Professor Irfan, a man who has decided to live on a boat away from his wife and constricted life. In the end the real truth comes out and there is a surprise ending."
 

This is one of the most lyrical films I have ever seen. It deals with horrific cultural, familial and community mores but the strength and intelligence of the protagonist and the simply incredible compassion of the skipper, Irfan, undo what otherwise would have been an even greater evil than that already set in motion. The sheer beauty of the Turkish landscape, whether of Cappadocia or the coast forms a stunning backdrop to the human play which unfolds in village, city and sailboat. A must see!

Lady Dar, this past Sunday, at an Irish Whiskey tasting put on by the South Okanagan Whisky Tasting Society, with Dame Judith, (Her husband, Kevin, is the President of SOWTS, she is the Treasurer), Paul and Amanda, who own a kilt-making shop here in Penticton! Jo-Anne came to collect Colin, her husband, after A Dram Come True, VWF fund-raiser, a week ago this past Friday, at Performance Works on GI! Ask her how he felt next day!!! Back patio, late this afternoon; They often snuggle up together in the so-called Rumpus Room! 
 

Hello, Patrick: I am marooned at home today with what feels like an epic cold bug. Too sick to work (honestly! -- I'm worried about what I'm NOT getting done) but can manage to sit up in bed with laptop.

Anyhow, I wanted to thank you for making the effort to meet at Dunbar the other day. It was good to see you and I wish we could have had a longer visit. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in the Lower Mainland, especially the Rugby 7s (but was it raining that day?)

I look forward to a longer visit next time, and would also like to make a summer visit to the Okanagan a regular thing, so may soon be looking at some prospective dates. I have lots of accumulated Aeroplan points so it's really easy to pop up there! (Even after reserving some for a prospective visit to Winnipeg to meet my pilot, who is about to leave for a flying job in Thompson. Thompson! 

Very remote, but he hopes for a transfer to Winnipeg relatively soon. Pay is good, he gets to fly a plane that he likes (Dash-8), and the evolving plan is that after a year or so at this gig, he'll be able to to close the chapter on his working life -- though there is the possibility of continuing in a training role, which appeals to him. Overall, I think it's pretty impressive that he scored at flying job at age 65 (which he turned on March 10th)).

I wanted to ask you about my Elite Fluid Alu Trainer, which I believe I mentioned before. As I recall, you indicated some interest (it was awhile ago). I acquired it about two years ago, while endeavouring to get in shape for our Camino walk (May 2015). It worked great as a piece of equipment, but it did not work well in my small apartment space. It was just too big and quite difficult to move out of the way (for example, when I had guests).

I am trying to "de-clutter" and would like to find a good home for it. So I am offering you right of first refusal. I don't think it's still being made by Elite, but it is on the Mountain Equipment Co-op website (though "no longer available") if you would like to take a look at the specs: Elite Fluid Alu trainer. As you'll see, it is Italian-made! Please let me know about that. Otherwise, I believe you mentioned another looming visit (May?) so hope to see you (and your better half :-)) perhaps then. Good news about your bush pilot! My Dad worked at the mine in Thompson, for a year or so, when we returned to Winnipeg, from Elliott Lake. You should take advantage of that posting to visit Churchill to see the polar bears. I'd love to do so, the more so since it is in our former home province and we'd not done so when there. I'm very, very interested in the Elite Fluid Alu Trainer! Thanks for offering me  right of first refusal. We'll next be in town in May, probably from 10th to 15th, for Lady Dar's Library School graduating class reunion. I'm sure we could arrange a visit and a "transfer" at that time. Great that you plan on visiting again. You are always welcome. Just let us know a few possible dates so that we can make sure our schedules mesh.
 

Had a blast in Vancouver even though it was raining as you mentioned. Rugby was held at BC Place so not an issue as far as weather was concerned although a tad dampish, on Sunday, when we walked over Cambie Bridge, from Stadium, to where Sarge had parked car, just up from Seawall on Spyglass Place. Light rain here, as I scribe so I'm planning to go to pool this afternoon, to resume my deep-water walking. Have been for some fabulous rides over last few days so really enjoying being back in the saddle again.

We are finally getting some slightly warmer weather; but a couple of our friends that came here for the first time.....left early. He could not take the weather....ha. There are so many of these seniors that are sick this year....there has hardly been any happy hours; only a few, that our condo has provided for. You go anywhere; and all you hear is coughing; sneezing, etc. But, we have survived so far....guess it has been a rough day all around; and here, the doctors are having a time getting people in without a long waiting time....guess eveywhere. We have not needed their care yet....lucky I guess......

Anyway; there are a few things left to do here; we do hope to get out golfing; maybe once; and with the weather; even a hike anywhere is a problem. Loved your pictures; and just keep it up.....so good to hear your back on the bike again......must be super.....we bike sometimes at home; but with the traffic; and folks who do not bike.......seem to not watch out for you.....so; we have cut back on that outing. Hi Slightly Warmer Weather Folk! Grand that you avoided the wide-spread flu bug! As you mention it does seem like it is taking a long time to warm up but, that being said, Lady Dar reported, just the other day, that the garlic we planted last November, [Bulbs from good friend in Naramata that grows wonderful wonderful garlic!], has some tiny green shoots poking through. As well, the rhubarb root, [From a  friend in hiking group.], is showing signs of new growth so we are absolutely delighted, as new "green-thumbers"! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Dear Patrick Great to hear from you about your St. Paddy's Day Irish Whiskey tasting.  When in Dublin last year John and Eric went Irish Whisky tasting and they certainly found them to be interesting. Bought some and shared them with Colin. Thanks again for that wonderful St. Patrick's card.  I was able to show it to Colin and he enjoyed it as well. Those Lawson cards are of exceptional quality.

The Writers Festival Scotch Tasting may have been interesting to Colin but he really overdid it and his recovery was difficult.  What a mistake it was having him attend.  Anyways he has now recovered and he did enjoy tasting some of the scotches that he would never otherwise have had the chance to taste.

This past weekend I went with a good neighbor friend to Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach and stayed with Colin's mother in Qualicum.  She is 91.  The weekend hop was interesting--like Nanaimo city centre and harbor walk--with Vancouver Island Regional Library, conference centre, Port Theatre and museum.  We talked and walked and visited a wonderful Used Book store--quite impressed with their collection.  Then we investigated quilting shops as Diane is a quilter.  Ended the day in Qualicum and went to Coombs Country Market. Sunday was a spectacular day--had a great brunch seaside at the Shady Rest and left on the 5:00 p.m. ferry for Horseshoe Bay.  Mt Baker off in the distance and coastal mountains were spectacular.  All in all a great weekend.

Anyways--we were going to go to Lima Peru on April 10--decided to cancel because of all the flooding.  Sad but I am relieved.  Not sure what we will do now--managed to get our Aeroplan points back. No Joke: A magician worked on a cruise ship. The audience was different each week, so, the magician did the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: the captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood, he started shouting in the middle of the show.

“Look, it’s not the same hat!” or “Look, he’s hiding the flowers under the table!” or “Hey, why are all the cards the ace of spades?”  The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything. It was, after all, the captain’s parrot.

Then one stormy night on the Pacific, the ship unfortunately sank, drowning almost all who were on board. The magician luckily found himself on a piece of wood floating in the middle of the sea with, and as fate would have it, the parrot.

They stared at each other with hatred but did not utter a word. This went on for a day… Two days… And then three days. Finally, on the fourth day, the parrot couldn’t hold back any longer and said…“Okay, I give up. Where’s the ship?”

Patriçio, My beemer, after a lube/oil and small electrical fix (darn, those German electrons are expensive) is itching for a flat out highway let’s-get-those-valves-loosend-up spin and damn the torpedoes … but keep an eye out for the Manning Park Welcoming Committee (RCMP). Didn't leave the house until close to 1:45 pm as I had to lay a fire for Lady Dar. She was hosting a GFA meeting involving Caroling for a Cause and wanted living room to be cosy. Sun was shining but there was quite a cool breeze, NNW at 13 kph so I decided I'd make my first run to Summeria of the season. This way I'd fight the head wind on outward bound leg and ride the jet-stream on the return. Started off with the Lakeshore/Riverside/Power Street Loop before hardnosing the highway. Dipsy-doodled into Red Wing first, to complete a loop of both sections of the East development and then I was sailing along 97. Was pleased to find that the shoulder was relatively clear of accumulated grit and traffic was not overly heavy.

Going was not too, too bad, in spite of head wind and I quite enjoyed being back on one of my favourite "flatland" routes. Enjoyed seeing how some of the construction projects in Trout Creek had progressed since last Fall but was mildly annoyed that the bike path out of Trout Creek was still closed. Consequently, I had to ride back on 97 until I could exit onto Lakeshore Drive to make my way to Crescent Beach. Once there I looped Higgin Ave until I had logged 41 km and then set off back south again. 

Great not to be bucking the head wind and I zoomed along, making the transition back onto 97 without having to touch the Dreaded Burning Ground, Dear Reader! Had managed to achieve an AVG of 22.2 kph by the time I was at Red Wing West and did a number of loops there to clock approximately 64 km before heading into Penticton. Needed to execute a couple of tiny didpsy-doodles before making for PTC but once there I knew I had the distance I wanted. By then, really hoped I could maintain my AVG at, or slightly above, 22 kph but knew it would probably drop on slight upgrade on Ellis and then into wind when I turned on White. Hi Corinne and Pat, Sadly my dear old Dad slipped away last Thursday. I was with him about an hour before he died and he was quite comfortable. I left to come home and 15 minutes after I arrived had a phone call from the nursing home to say he had gone. I think he waited for me to go. Although we are all sad at his passing we are all somewhat relieved both for him and Mum. Love Trevor Dearest Trevor! Deepest sympathy on the death of your Dad. I know it meant a great deal to you that you had been able to be with him shortly before he slipped away and that he did so as comfortably as possible. Certainly understand what you said about both him and your Mum. Nevertheless, it is still a difficult time and a deep loss. Hello To the Burns Street Sippers We have been watching the weather too as Dana wanted to take the first possible weather window to drive to the Island with Kian. She got away and we have a week which we will try to use for seasonal chores. Mind you I just got my VW bug out of winter storage and although I can't put the top down yet, it will be hard to resist. Bad time of year for incoming bills so that dampens any spring cavorting.
 
I was feeling good about picking up my insurance the other day when I was put firmly in my place at the counter. The agent was a very attractive woman in her thirties who proclaimed that I was the spitting image of her Nana. That was a first ...The regular hockey season is over and we know we at least have one playoff bid. I am ready for it to be over. I am ready to ready my postage stamp sized garden for spring. I do see some signs of growth. Do you have a garden at the house? Take care..

Hi Playoff Hockey Fans!! Grand that you have a bid! Buona Fortuna!!! Yes, we do have a "postage stamp" garden as well. Lady Dar reported, just the other day, that the garlic we planted last November, [Bulbs for good friend in Naramata that grows wonderful wonderful garlic!], has some tiny green shoots poking through. As well, the rhubarb root, [From a  friend in hiking group.], is showing signs of new growth so we are absolutely delighted, as new "green-thumbers"! Speaking of which, Lady dar is green with envy over your convertible Bug! Ellen, our next door neighbour, has one as well so this is a further thorn in Lady Dar's side! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi, Patrick Thanks for the email. I had just seen Jocelyn and Jim at a lunch last week at Athenes restaurant on Broadway near Alma Street. Both look well. Also there were Bill Watson, Tom Shorthouse, Ture Ericson, and a couple more people whom I forgot (happens alot to me these days -- the forgettting!)

Things going okay with my family. Have 5 grandkids now, all nearby in Vancouver or Coquitlam. Keeps my wife and me busy. I am doing some cataloguing of books for seniors who want to move and don't know what they have. Keeps me busy and brings in a few extra bucks. I go to the Y gym three days a week for exercise, Nice life.

Yes, it is too bad about Eldo, We are good friends, But Saltspring is just too difficult for me to get to and he is not really ready for visitors. Did you know Grace, his wife? Nice lady. Had a gentle, soft paw poke at 6:55 am to wake me up. Time for cats to go outside, Duke insisted, so I complied while Lady Dar continued her beauty sleep. Have taken to letting them out the front door so that by the time they are back inside I've had time to zap my java and ready their breakfast. Clear sky with sun shining although there is a bit of frost. Plan to go for a ride around 10:00 am, while Lady Dar is at church. as we are off to a whisky tasting this afternoon. Event starts at 3:30 pm so need to need to be be ready well before then or Lady Dar will be upset.

Yesterday, when I was at the Summerland Public Library, I saw Sue Cline, the librarian I'd met when I first borrowed the books, at Book Return Counter, but she didn't know if Marian would be attending the Book Club that morning. Marian had some cataract surgery last week, I believe. The group's meeting was about to start shortly and I bumped into Olga Polga on the sidewalk outside the library, as I was leaving, as she was going to the Book Club.
 

Went for a great ride once I was back, although I got pretty wet during the first part of the outing! Plan to head to OK Falls this morning, once the bit of frost burns off. Brief update – All the doctors and specialists continue to determine what is causing my extreme pain in my left shoulder. The latest was a visit to Oncology. Sounds much worse than it is, as they have ruled out the major more serious issues, however could have some minor relationship. The myasthenia gravis and blood clots are under control and being treated nicely, however no one as yet has figured out the left clavicle/shoulder issue. Unable to stand or walk more than a few feet without the pain so Susan is having to spoil me greatly. Needless to say I would rather be independent. Will let you know once this is figured out and we can get on the road again! Hi to Lady Dar and others! CC

Hello Dame Judith, King Kevin, et al! Thank you both, (as well as other members of the Society), for the wonderful, wonderful tasting, delicious meal and post-gathering bash! (Not to mention the Johnny Walker glasses!) It was a more than delightful afternoon/early evening and a pleasure to meet so many of your friends as well as having a chance to get to know some of the other people I'd met at the last tasting I attended. [Dame Judy had invited us to sit at their table and Simon McKenzie, chef at Zias Stonehouse, was one of people there. Enjoyed chatting with him and Colin, his brother.  Welsh lads!!!]

 

As soon as hills dry out a bit more I plan to start hiking again. Trust it won't be too, too long a wait as I miss you both and rest of the gang! Two tables of bridge in Summeria this evening, at Olga Polga's House of Cards.

If either one of you or both wish to join the Wait List please complete the application form and send it to our Secretary Stuart Bish. The Wait List as about 45 on it right now but changes may occur that may lessen the current eight year wait to move up. Since we were off to a SOWTS tasting at 3:00 pm I was under Lady Dar's strict orders to be home by no later than 2:00 pm. This being the case I decided I'd better stick close to home and so opted for my standard hamster-wheel, route regulare, (PTC/Lakeshore/Riverside/Power Street Loop), so that is what I did. Much more enjoyable, Dear Reader, riding in the bright sunshine than in the soaking rain so put my dizziness aside and just hunkered down for the seemingly endless loops to be over. As might be expected, given dry conditions, managed to raise yesterday's AVG of 21.1 kph to 21.7 kph. Map and Stats for ride:

Young Patrick, I am ashamed for not have written sooner. First thanks for the St Patrick's day card. Are you at home or are you travelling in warmer climates? You two do get around a lot.  
 

I have spent the winter here, but it has been the best winter on record, so I got through it easily. We had a little squirt there where we got 3 storms in 6 days that was a little hairy, one of which shut the whole city for a day. We have lots of equipment so we bounced back pretty quickly. Here in the Maritimes, you are never sure what to expect, so we are on guard for a while yet.
 
My best friend, Norma lives on PEI. She worked for WCB at the same time Ken Cummane did, as well, she had a cabin down the road from me in Birch Bay. We have been friends for almost 60 years , and she has been such a great friend. One of the few people I know, that I have never heard anyone say a word against. 

She is in stage 4 cancer on PEI and they have stopped treatment. She was on chemo for a few years now and cannot have any more. I am hoping she regains some of her taste ability for food, and that she stays well enough for me to go visit and take her out for a few good meals before long. Her family will all be there this summer, and I would like to be there before they arrive. She was quite a tall and not small, but she is now 125#.
 
I am still kicking. I put my back out badly last Thurs. and went to the chiropractor on Friday. I am amazed he is still in business as I was screaming so loud while he was trying to adjust. It was the worst I have ever been. He has now gone to Cuba for 2 weeks, but it is improving, so I will make it. Well Kid, give my best to Corinne and I hope you are hale and hearty... Cheers ..Bill
