Hi Glasgow! Pleased to hear that your recovery goes well. [Yes indeed, slow but sure, as you mention. I am pleased to report that I feel I have been making decent progress with movement and range of arm motion so am being quite disciplined about doing all the daily exercises assigned by my physio.] Sorry that you won't be visiting just yet but understand completely. That being said, both Lady Dar and I were looking forward to seeing you both.

I will drive to Kelowna this coming Friday to collect Lady Dar, around noon. Denise and Bill Gross are coming up to spend a week in Naramata, renting a cabin at Deep Roots Winery, and will stay with us that night. We all have tickets to see Michael Kaeshammer at The Dream Café so we can walk there and back and not have to worry about driving. Won't be riding in the GranFondo this year, due to my shoulder, but Lady Dar and I are volunteering at the start line, at 5:45 am on Sunday, July 14th! Following Tuesday, Magareta, Chloë's nanny from the '80's, will be visiting, for three nights, along with her boyfriend, Hans. They fly back to Vancouver on Friday and it is Poplar Grove Wine Club Bash, always a blast, that evening, with same at Upper Bench on Saturday. The Marriage Officiant has a wedding each day of the weekend so the fact that you are not coming, while disappointing, of course, means that we will have a bit of recovery time before social merry-go-round starts spinning again! 

I'm just back from Spirit Ridge where I spent the night with Flamin' and Sarge. Corey had to take Avery to a birthday party at 10:00 am so after breakfast we loaded up the car and headed north. Ashlynn came with us and Flamin' and Sarge were coming up later to spend afternoon around their pool, before heading back to Vancouver. Chloë had stayed at our place the night before to cat sit. Thanks for inquiring about her. Yes, she is doing very well. Last two times she visited her doctor, for checkups, she's heard the baby's heart beat so we are all thrilled, of course. When she told her boss, almost a month or so ago, now, he was extremely supportive and will allow her to keep the company car over the course of her maternity leave and give her the option of working from home, a day or so a week, should she want to do so.


Before she left for home she showed me a picture Lady Dar had sent of a pretty high-end stroller, [One that Barb and George had for their own grandchildren. Chloë said it would be perfect for walks on the KVR. In fact, she was waiting for Beckster to wake up, following her night shift, as they have planned an outing there this afternoon.], which she will bring back with her. 


Must away to start my shouldares so I'll watch the first part of Tour de France instead of Charité. Once I'd finished Charité at War stumbled across Charité, (First series, although I wasn't aware of it at the time.):"In Berlin at the end of the 19th century, Ida works as an assistant nurse at the world-famous Charité Hospital in order to pay off her debts to the medical facility. Had voice mail from Ragin', a few days ago now. Had not had any surgery at that point and seemed fairly tired, at least form his speech/voice. Pics: Local cherries from Bill Sliva, owner of a large orchard between Middle and Upper Roads. He also owns a suite in one of buildings Chloë manages so that is how they met, initially. He stopped by her work, on Friday, to give her a large container of cherries. I had invited her for dinner that night and she brought me some. I often have them in my yogurt while I sip my first java of the day. Bill is also extremely generous with his peaches and apples. Lady Dar, Sarge, Avery and Ashlynn picked boxes and boxes of peaches last year and I picked over 600 lbs of apples. Dehydrated a huge number but they are so popular that I'm down to about ten last Ziploc bags.

Before Chloë left we cut the "needles" on both Duke and Etta. The Boy didn't make a sound but Miss Etta squeaked a couple of times! When she headed for home I sent a few messages and then started on my shouldares. Took a break in between sets to have some peanut butter and honey on a few of the pieces of wonderful bread Flamin' insisted I take from SR. While I was munching I called Ragin'. He underwent surgery about four days ago now and has only just been allowed to sit up! He said he will remain in hospital for a month. Not sure if this is fact or if he is confused as he mentioned he'd been in a wheelchair for six weeks. At any rate I don't think he will be travelling any time soon, let alone managing to live on his own once discharged. I think he must still be "recovering" from initial fall and/or surgery as he still sounds very tired, his speech quite laboured. He often seems at a loss for words so I assume the bleeding may well have affected something. Of course, this is diagnosis at a distance so I may well be wrong about everything I've mentioned. I would like to hope so but I fear things are not going all that well.

Young Patrick et al. How is your summer going?I am sorry I haven't been in touch for a while. Between doctor's appts., tests at the hospital and a little social life, I have been run ragged. I saw my oncologist Friday ( or at least his assistant) and they seem to be a little stumped. There is a dense spot in my lung where the incision was when they removed part of it. It is neither growing or shrinking. They are not saying it is cancer... neither are thay saying it is not. They will continue doing a CAT scan every 3 months until I can be hooked up to a generator.. The heck with your solar panels, I will be self contained in no time.. Seriously, I took this as a good sign, and might even make one more jaunt to Bangkok before this old body quits all together.
 

I have been eating cherries very often, although they only seem to have Washington State ones so far. I think of you folks every time I sit down with a bowl. It was funny in Bangkok that almost all fruit was reasonable except for cherries which were very expensive, I forget where they came from.. maybe Israel. I had the convertible out today for a drive around town. I use it very seldom because it is so much handier to just step outside and get in the everyday car. The Beemer became a classic this year (1994) and it is holding up better than I am. It still gets lots of compliments.
 

I don't plan on going anywhere this summer. I have a few things to take care of, plus I have lunch dates every week for the next while.. It's about a 2 hour loop to the South with great views at the snack stop, followed by (for those interested and weather permitting) an extension of an hours loop to the north. It's forecasted to be okey dokey weather in the morning but possible precip in the afternoon.
Usual meet-up arrangements ... at Penticton Home Hardware by 8am for car pooling (Sumlndrs 7:40 at IGA). Also, if it works better for you, meet the hikers at the White Lake car parking by 8:30am. Hope to see you tomorrow. Cheers. Phil

[Took in first couple of numbers and I quite enjoyed Natalie's lovely, lovely voice.] Would have liked to stay for rest of show but close friend, Sarge, flew to Penticton that evening and we had made plans to meet. Must away to have a bite of breakfast before I head down to The Farmers' Market. One of Chloë's friends owns an orchard between Upper and Middle Bench and he gave her a large container of cherries yesterday. I invited her for dinner last night and she brought me some. I will have them in my yogurt while I sip my first java of the day. Lady Dar isn't back until next Friday but if you are out for a stroll, or in our neighbourhood, pop by to say hello. Buongiorno Tammy and James! Lovely to meet you this past Thursday! Thank you for supporting the 50/50 draw. I sold more tickets, ($190 worth), than I've ever done! After I left the Dream I stopped at Cannery Brewery to pick up some Growlettes and drove by your place. Since Tammy had given me your address I knew exactly where it was as it is on one of my regular bike routes. Very attractive bungalow, probably a bit larger than our place. Since I have not been riding since March 12th, with my shoulder replacement, this was the first time I'd seen the apartment complex going up, directly across from you.

Coincidentally, when we bought our place, back in 2015, the lot to the south of us was vacant. Now a three story duplex sits beside us. Not at all unhappy as building shades us from brunt of summer's heat and helps to keep our place cool. Neighbours are a lovely couple and we enjoy each other's company. Lady Dar isn't back until the end of next week but if you are out for a stroll, or in our neighbourhood, pop by to say hello. At any rate, do keep in touch. Until next our paths cross, stay well. Grand snapola but I didn't realize that The Great Ronaldo painted his toenails! He'll have to come with me for a pedicure when you return next June! Article is pretty good about outlining numerous biking possibilities and I'd dearly love to cycle north of here, to both Kelowna and Vernon, as I haven't yet had the opportunity to do so. As I believe you know, I drove Lady Dar to Kelowna on Canada Day as she flew to Winnipeg for about ten days or so to help her Mother with the sale of her home, at Falcon Lake. We chatted with Lady Dar last night and she was exhausted having been busy readying things for the garage sale today. Hi You have been busy, you lead a fun life! I just got home from drumming all evening in Baddect at an outdoor festival. Lots of people wondering by listening and telling us how “delightful” we sound. These people obviously don’t get out much. We went to a place called the Bitehouse last night in Big Baddeck- I booked the night Jan. 5th. It is very difficult to get into the restaurant -I heard he has over 400 people requesting a reservation and he was full. People book January 5th and he’s full before the day ends. It is a 7 course dinner. It is beautifully presented and delicious. I forgot to take pictures, I was enjoying the meal so much. Here’s the crowd we went with.  

Hi High-End Restaurant People! Must be nice to be part of The Beautiful People crowd! Hoity Toity! And I gave you sandwiches! Did you eat them with Champagne? Will be pretty busy until I collect Her Imperiousness at Swoopsville Arrivals, in Kelowna, next Friday, I hope! [Apparently Swoop has cancelled numerous flights of late!] Physio Wednesday morning at 9:30 am, and Green New Deal Town Hall meeting at 6:30 pm. Patrizzio saves Mother Earth! Massage, with the gift certificate Lady Dar gave me, on Thursday, with Caithy Boyle. Also signed up for the Climate Advocacy training seminar put on by Citizens' Climate Lobby on Sunday, July 21st while The Marriage Officiant is busy marrying people! Sarge flew into Penticton Thursday evening and he and Flamin' invited me to overnight with them tonight. Kid Chelene is working today, [Rebecca is in Vancouver, visiting a new niece.], so we'll drive down after he finishes his shift at 3:00 pm. Stroll down to the Farmers' Market around 11:00 am and picked up a couple of heads of lettuce and a dozen eggs. Saw friend, Jake, and as I was carrying the egg carton, he took out two and mimed throwing them at me! Back home to finish my shouldares and finish packing so that I was ready for Corey.

As I was now the proud owner of two tickets to the Penticton Scottish Festival, at Kings Park, just down Eckhardt from us I wanted to drop by as I'd never been before. At the PAG Dinner and Auction, a week or so ago Chloë forged my name on silent auction bid for the Festival and "I" won! Two cans of Irn-Bru, [Wait a minute did you say Irn-Bru. That settles it; we are coming now. E mailed Branco. Take care and thanks for understanding.], and a spiffy T-shirt from kilt makers, here in town, along with two tics so simply had to go! Malt tasting was over by the time we arrived but we bumped into one of the couples, [Eileen and Thomas], I'd met selling 50/50 tickets at the Dream on Wednesday night.

Enjoyed the ride down, chatting with Corey about his new assignment and when we were out of Oliver he asked if I wanted to do any tasting. Chloë just happened to mention that she was interested in The Chase from CC Jentsch so I suggested we stop there. Kid Chelene was happy to do so as he'd never been before. Enjoyed the tasting and chatting with the various people at the counter, one young woman, Canadian, studying nursing in Rockhampton so I mentioned our visit there in 1991. Then across the valley to collect latest release at Bartier Brothers. Quick tasting there and then on to SR. Quite coolish by the time we arrived so moved the plate of hors d'oeuvres inside. I brought the liver paté I'd made, as well as bacon wrapped scallops so everything went well. Sarge did steaks on he bbq and Flamin' had delicious mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables and tasty friend oniones, along with a terrifc mixed salad. Dessert was her simply delicious home-made cherry pie. I was too full to eat it right after dinner but enjoyed two pieces after I had a shower and we were watching last of Tour.

Earlier I asked Avery if she was sleeping in the bedroom we'd been assigned. She replied: "Don't worry, I don't snore!" Slept well but had to snuggle under the duvet as fan was on and it was very cool in room. Too, too sleepy to clamber out of bed and turn it off!

PAG Dinner & Auction! Thank you SO much, Patrick for forwarding the photos. It was a fun event. We have just returned from Calgary after visiting the family for Canada Day. Busy times for sure. The girls love the pool there. I drove down to Spirit Ridge with their son, Corey, earlier today, after his shift was over. He is an RCMP officer here in town. At any rate, I thought I knew one of the people at your table but simply couldn't place him, at the time. However, when we happened to be talking about the resort, [We own a quarter share while our friends now have a half share.], I realized that I'd met Daniel last year at the AGM! I had also forgotten that he and his wife own Nighthawk Vineyards. If you see him socially, please pass along my regards and tell him I apologize for not saying hello. Hi Garage Sale Babes, et al! How lovely to hear from you, Busy Bees! You are almost as industrious as Duke's bees, gathering pollen from the lavender! Great to hear that you were able to book for Upper Bench Bash. Interestingly enough, I had a message from Kara Norman, one of the women we met at UB last year and who came back to our place with her friend, [Cannot remember her name.], for a drink afterwards, a few days ago and she hoped she'd see us this year again. However, I hadn't heard from UB, [as you are one on wine club list], so I called, yesterday, and Gavin happened to answer the phone. He said evening was sold out shortly after message went out so I figured, with all you sorting and pricing, you hadn't been able to request tickets. Anyway, very pleased that you managed to obtain tickets! Hip Hip Hooray! Don't work to hard on garage sale as you'll be hopping from moment I collect you at airport with Denise and Bill staying that night to see Michael Kaeshammer at the Dream, wedding next day and then volunteering at GranFondo at 5:30 am Sunday morning!

You can rest up on Monday, although there will be bridge that evening. Next day, Maggie and Hans arrive with your pre-birthday dinner at FSB on the 18th. [I popped in last night, before going to Dream to sell 50/50 tickets and asked Lisa about menu. She said she and John would figure things out once she knew about any dietary restrictions/preferences, etc., and probably tailor dishes to what was already on menu. I trust this meets with Your Ladyship's approval! [Must be rather demeaning to have to clean silver and polish candlesticks when you are used to having such domestic chores attended to by the Downton staff while you loll in the garden, eating the odd cucumber or watercress sandwich with your vintage French white!]

Poplar Grove bash on your birthday so I'll buy you all the drinks over the course of the night! Next evening, at it again, at UB, with a couple of weddings thrown in, [Saturday and Sunday], for good measure. Catherine and Matt arrive on Sunday for a couple of nights and then it's book club day after they depart! At least Senka will host! Jill and Herb Roth will be with Flamin' and Sarge on the 25th. Will they be at Spirit Ridge? If so, I assume we might make a run to see them.

Whew! I need to go back to bed so exhausting is simply listing what lies ahead, never mind actually living through it! As it was, I was up at 4:00 am for the daily watering of the gazelles! [When I came into kitchen, this morning, just after 6:00 am, both dishes were empty and level in "dust" bowl was down quite significantly! Mean Streets and Tough Cat Love!] Last night, just before I went to bed Etta came in and as soon as I gave her a few strokes I realized she had lost her collar! Put on a spare one and will look for it when I go out to water. Thunderstorm warnings for later this afternoon, [even hail is threatened!], so I'm not going to do much other than raised beds, unless forecast turns out to be incorrect.

Managed to get through to Telus this morning to add Sportsnet to our subscription so that I can watch the 2019 Tour de France! Hip Hip Hooray!!! [One of my birthday presents to Lady Dar!] Chloë is coming for dinner this evening so last night I took out a couple of frozen pork chops we inherited from Lynne and Peter! Will do cauliflower with cheese sauce and Chloë suggested I "smuggle" real flower into house to use while you are away. Told her I was going to substitute gluten-free pancake mix to try to get rid of some of the 17 tons we have in the cupboard! 

I had also taken out of the freezer what I thought was a small package of steaks, [another inheritance from The Lighthalls!], but tuned out to be chicken livers, upon thawing, so I've fried them up, along with some of the Walla Walla Sweets and will use Nancy's recipe for paté. Too, too bad you won't be at Spirit Ridge! Must away as I want to fix my yogurt and bee pollen. Almost finished one jar but the full second will be waiting for you, Lady Dar! PS: Forgot to mention that I started another Netflix series, Charité at War: "In 1943, the staff at Berlin's Charité hospital struggle against the effects of World War II and the Nazi regime, including eugenic medical practices." Just popped up, as a suggestion, after I finished Disappearance and then I realized it takes place where I was hospitalized! It is obvious that many of the scenes, at least the outside ones, are shot using the older sections of the hospital buildings and grounds. Aside from this most real connection, the plot is very, very interesting, given the personal and political situations the characters face at this point in the war. I think that actual war footage is used, at times, showing views of the city and life on the streets, although the original B/W film has been "colourized".

For our part we have been quite busy with a quite a few visits from friends from both Vancouver and elsewhere in Canada. As well, a merry-go-round of social activities, from the wonderful weekly Farmers' Market to the Penticton Art Gallery's Dinner and Auction at the end of last month. I drove Lady Dar to Kelowna on Canada Day as she flew to Winnipeg for about ten days or so to help her Mother with the sale of her home. She lives at Falcon Lake, a provincial park about 125 km east of Winnipeg, quite close the Manitoba/Ontario border, and initially, she will live with Corinne's brother and wife, who live immediately next door. I chatted with Lady Dar yesterday and she is busy readying things for a garage sale this coming weekend as the house needs to "decanted" for real estate listing, etc.

For my part, I have recently become a 50/50 ticket seller, a volunteer at the Dream Café, here in town. I usually have about three shifts per month, from 7:00 pm to just before the shows start, at 8:00 pm. Volunteers are welcome to stay for the performance with drinks at half price! My last shift was last Saturday evening. Was quite impressed, in particular, with Raincity's lead singer and saxophonist, both young women. Band is from Vancouver. In fact, I'm on tonight. Daughter of the Moon, Natalie Ramsay, a folk songstress on acoustic guitar will perform.

When friend, Rhoda, from Cape Breton, was here, we took in Over the Moon, fab, fab husband/wife duo, from Longview, Alberta, where Ian Tyson is their rancher neighbour! They covered one of his songs and did so remarkably, remarkably movingly! Will return on July 12th to see Michael Kaeshammer with more friends from Vancouver, Denise and Bill, up for a week, staying at the rental cabin at Deep Roots Winery. They will bunk with us that night so that we can walk to the venue and not have to worry about drinking and driving!

Yesterday morning, after I'd enjoyed my java I went outside to water the front garden. I used the water from the two rain barrels on the back patio so I played Gunga Din, carrying full pails and watering cans to the front. With watering restrictions in place I wanted to empty all the barrels in the hope that the rain forecast for next few days will fill them up. By the time I was finished it was around 11:00 am so I started my shouldares. [I underwent a complete right shoulder replacement on March 12th and am very pleased to report all went extremely well. However, a fairly long process of physical rehabilitation to gain full movement and rotation. Not complaining but I have to be very disciplined if I want to as complete a recovery as possible.] Had had a phone call from Flamin', [aka Michele], inviting me to join her and her son, Kid Chelene, [aka Corey], for dinner at the Front Street Brasserie at 7:30 pm. I'd invited them for a drink and nibblage first so knew I had to be ready by 6:15 pm. 

With Lady Dar away, I will be the Constant Gardener for the duration of her holiday. Radishes have been providing us with daily salad fixings and we are pleased as punch with how they taste. Didn't need to buy any at the last Farmers' Market as we will be self-sufficient for next few weeks, or more, I think. Same goes for zucchini, both yellow and green. Had both, on Friday of the long-weekend, and they were simply delish! Even starting to pick cherry tomatoes so cannot complain in the least! [The ones I picked a few days ago vanished last night, gobbled up by Flamin' and The Kid, along with one of our latest cheeses, Gold, from Upper Bench, part of our Curds & Corks release!]

Other big news is that we had solar panels installed early in June, along with a Tier Two charger for our new electric vehicle, an eKona, by Hyundai. Very, very pleased with car. Haven't had a utility bill since we installed panels so am very curious to see what the bill will be, given the amount of electricity we are generating. I'm hoping I'll be able to spend all the savings on malt!!! Lady Dar insists any credits will be for shoes!

Dinner last night was wonderful and we'll be heading there again, on Thursday, July 18th. Lady Dar's actual birthday is July 19th, Wine Club Appreciation Bash at Poplar Grove, as you will know, so we'll have a celebratory dinner beforehand, with Maggie, [Chloë's nanny in the '80's], and her boyfriend, Hans, visiting from Denmark, along with Flamin' and her husband, Sarge, [aka Wayne], and Chloë. [She moved into her place at Sendero Canyon a few weeks after we met you. If you have time, you'll have to pop by, have a drink and "tour" of finished kitchen! We are more than pleased with how things turned out.]

Haven't heard from Upper Bench about their bash so I hope we haven't missed invitation. It has become so popular, over last few years, that one needs to book immediately or else no room at the winery! I plan to call as soon as they open this morning to see what is what. Have you booked already?

Sarge is flying in to Penticton this evening and they will drive to Osoyoos to stay at their place at Spirit Ridge for weekend. [They own a half share while we are the poor relatives with only a quarter share. Lady Dar has booked for August as Chloë would like it over her birthday, August 18th, as she usually invites about four of her girlfriends to stay. We, of course, are "told" to be gone by then. Kids today!] They've invited me to overnight with them on Saturday. Kid Chelene is working on Saturday, [He is an RCMP officer here in Penticton, along with his wife, Rebecca, but she is in Kamloops, with their daughters, Avery and Ashlynn, visiting her parents for a week.], so we'll drive down after he finishes his shift.

Wanted to stroll the Farmers' Market anyway, as well as take a look at the Penticton Scottish Festival, at Kings Park, just down Eckhardt from us. As mentioned above, had a wonderful time at the PAG Dinner and Auction, the day friend, Ski, [aka Rhoda], left to fly back to Cape Breton. I was much more restrained about bidding on anything this year but Lady Dar came home with a fairly large piece while Chloë forged my name on silent auction bid for the Scottish Festival and "I" won! Two cans of Irn-Bru and a spiffy T-shirt from kilt makers, here in town, along with tics. Again, kids today!

As well have a release to collect at Bartier Brothers, off Black Sage Road, but winery will be closed by the time we whiz by so will have to pick it up on Sunday, on way home. Chloë will stay overnight, on Saturday, to take care of Etta and Duke. Time to bundle up herbs so will say goodbye for now. Hi Salt Miners! How lovely to hear from you, from underground, no less! [Thanks, as well, for the great pictures from Holland and tales of your biking there. A couple of years ago, when I was watching the Tour de France, one of the commentators mentioned that the Dutch riders usually did very well with strong head winds as they trained with them all the time! Ever since we moved to Penticton I decide on which direction to ride, based on head wind. Whether out of the north or south, I ride into the head wind on way out, hoping it will not change direction on return journey!] Snaps of salt mine brought back great memories of visiting Wieliczka. Still have a souvenir bag of rock salt from there!

This morning I tied up bundles of sage, oregano and mint, harvested yesterday from our herb beds. I usually hang them in our garage for a couple of months, to dry them but decided to hang them in the kitchen, from the light fixture over the island counter, as the smell is wonderful, particularly the sage. Yesterday, took down those I'd hung earlier and stripped off dried leaves and bagged them for our own use or to give to friends. Also harvesting our lavender. Have two vases full, one on fireplace mantle in living room and another on small bureau in front entrance. Rhoda took back a bouquet to Cape Breton and both Flamin' and Kid Chelene would like one each as well. Travel safely. Stay well. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Was a tad worried as nary a single cat over the course of the night, particularly as I'd been awakened around 2:30 am, with a wail or two outside the bedroom window. Went to the front door but no sign of either Duke or Etta. When I was up at 6:10 am, again, no evidence of a feline presence inside. I went back to bed for another hour or so and when I looked into back patio Duke was curled up on one of the table chairs. Shortly thereafter Miss Etta came trotting into the yard and followed me inside to eat her pumpkin. Duke was obviously still sleepy as he didn't show up for a bit, although he did eat after he watched his sister enjoying her breakfast! Will go out to water shortly so perhaps I'll have a couple of supervisors!

Hello Patrick! I hope both you and Lady Dar are keeping well and you are enjoying the fine summer weather! I apologise for being out of touch since meeting last year at Upper Bench's party. Dinner at FSB this evening was wonderful [Chloë was quite fussed when she discovered she had not been invited. She thought we were off to Dream!] The cherry tomatoes I picked, a day or so ago, vanished, gobbled up by Flamin' and The Kid, along with one of our latest cheeses, Upper Bench's Gold, before we left for the restaurant. Corey had never been before so he couldn't stop raving. We sat outside, on the patio, and it was most pleasant. Dinner was simply wonderful and we had a blast. Flamin' brought corkage, a 2016 Nk'Mip Syrah, 14.5%, and it was divine! 

We'll be heading there again, on Thursday, July 18th. Post-Canada Day Greetings from Burns Street! Hello Elowen and Company! Thanks for the lovely pictures of Elowen and the Canada Day greetings. Trust all goes well both on the Sunshine Coast and in Cornwall. Fairly quiet Canada Day for me as I drove Lady Dar to the airport in Kelowna in the late morning, for her flight to Winnipeg. She will be at Falcon Lake for about ten days, helping Clara ready her place for sale. Her mom will move next door, to stay with her son, George, and his wife, Barbara. The three will probably rent something in Winnipeg for the winter, although this has yet to be determined.

Had to cancel that night's regular bridge game as short one player. Most everyone in group is either travelling or has grandchildren to watch fireworks in the evening. Plenty to read so will start John Boyne's The Heart's Invisible Furies, next book club selection. Will be hosted by Senka Tennant, owner/winemaker of Terravista Winery. Last time at her place as she and her husband Bob, recently sold the winery! Both cats came in when fireworks started, frightened by the explosions! I could see some of the higher ones from our back driveway. I had a late dinner and then went to bed to read. Enjoyed the piece and quiet after so many busy days in a row.

Have quite a few errands I wish to accomplish today, one of which is to return to bank to have a certified cheque made out to Argon Solar as received final bill for solar installation. Plugged the car in to the new Level Two charger which was part of the overall package and two hours later battery was at 536 km so pleased with that. During the day, the charger draws from the solar panels. Haven't had a utility bill since we installed panels so am very curious to see what the bill will be, given the amount of electricity we are generating. We are here all weekend by ourselves at SR  if you are interested in coming up for a night or two Flamin' Hello Spirit Ridgers, et al! Thanks for the lovely invitation! Since I have tickets for the Scottish Festival on Saturday I was planning to go to the Farmers' market and then stroll over to the festival to have a look for an hour or so. After that I would head down to Spirit Ridge. Just talked to Chloë and she will move in to take care of Etta and Duke. If you will be staying until Monday morning I would stay on Sunday night as well. Let me know what works, and what I might bring, other than hootch, and I'll plan accordingly.

I phoned Branko tonight to see how his surgery went and reached Laurence, a friend, visiting at the time. He said that the doctors were waiting for a CT scan before operating so he didn't, in fact, undergo surgery to relieve inter-cranial bleeding today. According to Laurence the opinion is that he should be fine once this procedure is accomplished. However, Laurence also said that he was very confused and he could barely understand what Branko was saying. Laurence opined that he was just tired but I think/am concerned that it is probably something more serious than that. Anyway, this is the latest. Laurence said he would let me know what transpires over next little while.

Busy, busy day with errands of all sorts and taking care of watering the garden. Forecast suggested there might be a thunderstorm so I emptied both water barrels in front and most of the two on back patio, in anticipation of the downpour filling them up, and more. Anyway, I'll have enough to water both gardens tomorrow, although I'll be carrying pails and watering cans to the front. Pulled out one of the Walla Walla onions to see how they were doing. Small but very tasty, as I sliced some for a sandwich. Had green tops as garnish on tonight's salad. Not sure if rest will grow any larger. Zucchini are coming along nicely and first cuke I picked, on Sunday, was delish in that night's salad. Need to thin out more radishes tomorrow and I might pluck a garlic bulb to see how they are doing.

Have quite few bundles of sage and oregano, now dried, to strip and put in Ziploc bags. I have a booth at this coming FM and will sell them along with last of apple rings! Need money to pay for release at Bartier Brothers that I will collect on way to Osoyoos. Must way to read. Chat soon. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio! nora: hi everyone, just a note to let you all know that last thursday nora won the kobo prize for emerging writers in literary fiction. kobo is the second largest ebook company in the world. the prize is $10,000 plus aid in marketing etc. i am very proud and happy for her. she worked very hard for a long time on that book and it's nice to see her get recognized for that from someone other than friends and family.nic was with her at the awards in toronto and she said he filmed her accepting the award. i haven't seen it yet but if i can figure out how to send it i will. it took me a couple of days to figure out how to send an email to more than one person and i still don't know how to send a link in an email which i was trying to do as well (for the kobo site). i hope everyone is enjoying their summer and i'll see you when i see you.love ian

Confirmed, at last Thursday's PAG Dinner and Auction, with Albariña, [aka Senka!], that, after arm-wrestling,with Cousin Michelle,and winning, [Michelle was already two-sheets to the wind by then!], she will host on Wednesday, July 24th, at 7:00 pm. Bring The Heart's Invisible Furies, your sleeping bags and toothbrushes, [no swimming togs required, see below!], as this will be last time at Chateau Terravista so we can trash the place and swim nekkid in the pool after we discuss the book and drink all the wine in the cellar! Hi all, The hike last Thursday was beautiful. Hopefully we can have more of the same in a couple of days. The plan for Thursday is to hike up Eagle Bluff, near Vaseux Lake. We will: -meet at 0800 at Home Hardware north parking lot (0740 at IGA in Summerland) -carpool and drive to the SORCO eagle rehab place just to the south of Vaseux Lake -Hike around the south and east sides of Eagle Bluff and then finish the climb via the north slope. -descend and return to SORCO on the west side of the bluff. -find a suitable location for debriefing and refreshment Dave Whitton has asked that we not bring any dogs. There have been bear sightings! We ask that you bring a small donation for SORCO as a thanks for allowing us to use their grounds for parking. Are you interested? If so, please let me know soon. Hi Ragin'! Enjoyed talking to you yesterday and trust all will go well with your coming surgery. You will certainly have much on your plate for the next little,. Nevertheless, both Lady Dar and I hope your recovery is both speedy and full.
Lady Dar was up early to water the garden and now is finishing packing. She wants to leave for Kelowna around 9:40 am so I must away to have my bowl of yogurt with wonderful fresh cherries before we head out. Hello Salish Sea People and Lower Mainlanders! Had a very upsetting message from Peter Cook on Saturday, informing me of Ragin's fall, at home, in his kitchen, and subsequent hospitalization. I had a reasonably long chat, on the phone, yesterday, and Ragin' is to undergo surgery to release the pressure, from the bleeding, on his brain. He is in a wheelchair. I believe this is the case as he is too unsteady on his feet, not suffering from any paralysis, again, as far as I know. Understandably, he sounded so, so about the fall and aftermath. I don't know if his rather slow speech and responses were a result of the fall or perhaps any medication he might be taking. He's probably very tired and upset to boot. At any rate, his surgeon told him that, all going as expected, he would be able to travel, if accompanied, to both Portland, in August, I believe, and then to Croatia, in September, on trips already planned.

Given the state of his physical health/conditioning the last few times we visited, in Vancouver, and his last time here, [He couldn't even entertain biking.], I feel he has an unrealistic sense of his recovery, given the nature of this pretty serious injury. I hope, for his sake, that I'm wrong. I was "knocked out" after my two falls and hospitalization with pneumonia last summer and, relatively speaking, I was in far, far better shape than Branko. I didn't start riding again for over two months after being home.

When I talked to him about travel insurance he hadn't really thought about that aspect of his planned trips. I would imagine that if he is able to obtain coverage the cost will be high. When we travelled to Costa Rica in 2017 my typical, very reasonable coverage skyrocketed since I'd been hospitalized, within a year, having had my left hip replaced. And all went well, surgery, recovery, etc., as scheduled never mind what Branko is dealing with. How he is going to manage, living where he does, whenever he is discharged, is another matter, of course.

At any rate, these are just some of my concerned thoughts but I really just wanted to let you all know about what had happened to him, in case you didn't already know about his fall, subsequent hospitalization and coming surgery. If busy schedules allow, I'm sure he would enjoy a visit, a message, or a phone call. In closing, I told him that both Lady Dar and I hoped his recovery would be both speedy and full.

Would have stopped at Costco but closed for Canada Day so sped home.

Had to cancel tonight's regular bridge game as short one player. Most everyone in group is either travelling or has grandchildren to watch fireworks this evening. Plenty to read so will probably start John Boyne's The Heart's Invisible Furies, next book club selection. Will be hosted by Senka Tennant, owner/winemaker of Terravista Winery.
