With regard to your renos - we have an on-demand system and love it. No wasting hot water while you are gone, so bills are way less. Our plumber friend recommended a "Rennai" - Japanese brand and very reliable. You also want to go with one that has a large litre per minute capacity. -Colin

I'd love to get together for a visit, other than seeing Colin at Dram, but I'm not sure if that will be possible as my "dance card" is already almost fully booked. I'd like to nip out to UBC, during the day, on Thursday or Friday, so if that transpires, perhaps we could arrange to have a coffee somewhere. I don't know yet as another close friend has to have a series of medical tests and until he knows when they are to be scheduled, we can't arrange to meet. Must away as I need to transfer firewood from the south side of the house, where it has been curing for almost two years, to a spot near our front door, the easier for Lady Dar when she needs more fuel for the fireplace, while her indentured servant is away. This past fall/winter we used all the wood I was fortunate enough to obtain from friends who live on a large acreage on Spiller Road, up above Naramata Road, so their view of Okanagan Lake is simply spectacular. I can demonstrate my new Dyson Vacuum - OK, my life is less exciting as I would prefer.

Hi Patrick, Yes, we are once again in a winter wonderland. We actually had several blizzards blow through and then the sun would come out and melt most of it. However, yesterday, continuous snowfall definitely stuck so we were shovelling before going to work. It was awfully beautiful with the sun coming out to enhance our stunning mountain views. We are supposed to be getting in shape for golf at our own course, but we'll be lucky if it even opens by April this year. The puppies love it and bounce and jump around in the snow, burying their nose in it as if they are searching for truffles.

It's nice to hear that you are checking out some wines and wineries for us. We'll have to take you up on some of your recommendations. We are very excited to try some new things. It's funny that you should mention the sewing machine because I have an old historic one, too. I can't wait to see what you do with it. I'm also excited to see how you change your place. I thought it was perfect the way it was, but I understand that with Lady Dar being a closet interior designer that she'll make some wonderful adjustments with your input, of course.

It's always good to see things in Penticton evolving as you put down permanent roots. We are so looking forward to our visit. I need a few days off from our reno to re-charge my battery. Hi Patrick! The cats look so regal on the fence! Just love how they are enjoying the sunshine:). Really enjoyed your letter. I could almost smell the soup cooking as I was reading. Can just about taste it too if my iPad will allow me to dip my finger into that beautiful photo! Perhaps apple will put that feature into the next version...?

We have now been to the travel clinic for vaccinations and now I am collecting things for our trip to Shanghai. We leave March 17 and return March 26. Will be a fun 10 days with host families and quite a learning experience for the students we are taking. Just hoping I don't have to wear my nurse hat too much!

Found an app called CanImmunize to record my vaccinations in too. Quite handy. So I now have the boys and I stored in it and at least I know what we have and when we are due for more. Even tells me when I need my upcoming shots in my 60s. Now I can also stop packing the boys record books in my purse. That will lighten my load!

So another day of skiing to come this weekend and maybe a couple more when we return from China. Having windows replaced while we are away so that means we come home to the task of washing walls and dusting and painting trim.

Damian will be racing his Kub Kar on Saturday and Corben is playing hockey. April there is supposed to be an overnight at the Vancouver aquarium for the Cub group so hopefully there are enough people going. Will find out soon. Can't believe we are racing into March. Interim time, parent interviews spring break and then it is April.... only 3 months of school after that and then summer vacation all over again! Will really have to plan our visit to Penticton. Around 11:00 am I re-stacked some wood, from the south side of the house, where it has been "curing" for almost two years. below the window on the narrow front patio. Job went quite quickly as I had two expert "supervisors", dashing back and forth, between both piles, to make sure I worked efficiently! I wanted to do this to make it easier for Lady Dar who will have to tend the fireplace while I'm away howling in Vancouver!

Was finished and garbed to go by about 12:30 pm. As I was heading down Ellis I spied Lady Dar returning home from yoga, and other assorted errands, so I waved at her even though she swerved across the street to try and run me off the road! Fortunately, for me, she missed although a chap delivering flyers wasn't quite so lucky. He had to drop his carrier bag in order to fling himself  through a hedge to escape the lethal MarriageMobile! As I continued on my way, I could hear the loud oaths and pretty colourful imprecations from behind the hedge but I trust he was otherwise unhurt.
 
Had decided I'd make for OK Falls but wanted to see if I could outdo Saturday's distance so I started off with what seems to have become my basic starting route: PTC, Lakeshore, Riverside, Vancouver, Middle and Upper Bench loop. Knew I would be in for it, en route to OK Falls, when I did the first real stretch south on MB. Wind was blasting away at about 19 kph so not something to be sneezed at. Anyway, I had 21 km on the clock when I took another swing past Burns and once again, spied Lady Dar leaving the house. After our earlier encounter I was disinclined to wave but decided to, hoping her road rage had dissipated. It must have as when we passed each other on Eckhardt, a minute or so later, she kept to her own side of the thoroughfare.

Head wind on South Main wasn't too, too bad but as soon as I hit Eastside Road there was very little shelter and I had to gear down considerably. Wasn't going much more than 13.6 kph for most of the ride along Skaha. To make matters worse, the bottom two thirds of the lake is still ice-bound so the Polar Express had my toes numb in no time, although my lobsters kept my hands very comfortable. Once up the hill past McClean Creek Road, the sunshine was truly magnificent and when I was sheltered, it was actually rather warm. Unfortunately, when I set out I forgot my shades so I was worried that I might go snow-blind, so intense was the reflection off the snow covered ice.shining.

Furthermore, the surrounding hills were simply majestic, covered with snow. Closer to OK Falls itself, I could see, above and through the bare trees beside the road, the vineyards of See Ya Later Ranch and together, they formed a giant, open, grand piano, the strung rows seen as its wires. Quite a handsome reward for braving the icy blasts. 

Once in the OK Falls I didpsy-doodled past the beach front and then made my way to Oliver Ranch Road to complete the Stag's Hollow loop before making for home. Now the dastardly wind was helping me along and all the effort that had gone before was quickly forgotten as I sped along. Just as I reached the first level stretch, out of OK Falls, a gorgeous hawk swooped down on my right, almost stalling in the air above and slightly ahead of me, its  magnificent wings outspread, revealing its downy chest and amazing talons. Either I frightened it off or its prey had disappeared but the lovely creature veered away and flew to alight on a tall tree to my left. As it described its turn I could see its scimitar of a curved beak outlined against the blue of the clear blue sky. What an omen!

I was absolutely delighted that I had decided to go as far as I had otherwise I probably wouldn't have been treated to the wonders I spied. I had toyed with a shorter ride, around Skaha Lake Park, given wind, but thought I needed to push myself a bit. At any rate, quite enjoyed the return leg and I was soon on Government. Caught all the light and pulled up into our driveway just after 4:00 pm. Duke was there to meet me and as soon as I opened the door Miss Etta dashed out to join him. They both love to roll around on the smooth concrete, probably still reasonably, relatively warm from the late afternoon sun. Hope the snow stays away tomorrow as the last few rides have left me wanting more time outside. Cheers! Map and Stats for ride:

Featherbox write up:Here's what I've written up for you... I hope you enjoy this piece as much as i have completing it. i seen a typo... here it is again :)

Lusilyoo Featherbox: The frog featherbox was completed over 2 years… I had some leftover lumber from the University Hospital of the North Helping Hands Carving that was completed in 2011 by lead carver Peter George and myself. I hung on to the cedar as long I could until this feather box came to life in 2016. I had learned at a young age to make featherboxes from my late father Leonard Gauthier and I hope to keep passing on the lessons that he shared to whoever wants to learn. 

The Eagle feather is an honour to receive… some people wait all their lives to earn one. Keeping the sacred gifts in a safe place is what the featherbox is all about… I had received my first feather around the age of 16, with that I had learned how to make my own featherbox around the age of 17. I had recently gifted that 20 year old feather box to my cousin… it was a tough gift to give but I know it was meant for her. Who knows how long they will last but I’m sure it will last a lifetime if taken care of.

The Lusilyoo in Dakelh territory is the biggest clan that lives here… also that is my grandfathers clan and I wanted to honour the frog clan in this piece. There are many stories tied with the frog… from my traditional teachings the frog resides all over turtle island and is a messenger to our people. One prophecy is said that if we see millions of frogs gather together and travel we will see change in the world… Mother Earth is powerful. Knowing this, the animals are more connected than we are in this time and age, the animals live off the land and are guided by Mother Earth to do the right things to keep us safe and clear of any hardship that mat arise. Once Lady Dar was back from this morning's church service, we did take a look at the Home & Reno Show at the Penticton Trade & Convention Centre. Made a couple of good connections with a plumbing and heating outfit. We are planning to bring in a gas line this spring to facilitate hot water-on-demand and so need a contractor to do hook ups, etc. Also need to do a bit of electrical up-grading and this company will do both sets of work. Aaron, chap we spoke with, will come out next week to give us an estimate for work so we'll have a better idea of costs, timing, etc.

On a "decorating" matter talked to Stuart, of Back Alley Furniture, someone we've seen many times at the Farmer's Market. He had a very attractive table, using an old sewing machine stand, as one of his display items. I inherited Annie's mother's Singer so we are thinking of having it converted into something more usable but still wish to keep its history, more or less, intact. Stuart said it we provide the unit it would be around $200, +/-, depending on surface for table top. In the meantime, we'll "argue" about where to use it, once changed, take some measurements and then provide a picture of unit to show to him at one of the coming markets. Could also send him a picture, of course, as we have his email address.

YES Patrick it is snowing on and off, but not sticking, the snow flakes are as big as golf balls. But very wet. I have not been out yet, as it is cozy at home. Well you and Corinne sure have a busy life. That is so important, and be able to do what you like to do and enjoy. As I mentioned before, the Okanagan is a beautiful place and you have settle in completely. So much to do in that most gorgeous country side. I envy you. Not much news here at the moment, life is a quiet one until clued again for baby sitting and some volunteer for the opera and Symphony. Will be a very busy time as I'm playing bridge on Thursday evening with friends I used to play squash with. Friday is A Dram Come True, a whiskey-tasting fund raiser for the Vancouver Writers Festival at Performance Works, on Granville Island. Lady Dar and I have volunteered for the festival for many years, although I missed it this past October as a result of my hip-replacement. Both Saturday and Sunday I will be at the Sevens Rugby, at BC Place, again, with quite a few friends from squash circle.

Must away as I need to do a few chores before I think about transfering firewood from the south side of the house, where it has been curing for almost two years, to a spot near our front door, the easier for Lady Dar when she needs more fuel for the fireplace. This past Fall/Winter we used all the wood I was fortunate enough to obtain from friends who live on a large acreage on Spiller Road, up above Naramata Road, so their view of Okanagan Lake is simply spectacular. We will: -meet at 0900 at Home hardware north parking lot in P’ton (0840 at IGA in Summerland) -carpool and head past Apex to the nickel Plate area -park somewhere in the area near the old cemetery and snowshoe around or up and down a couple of the hills in the area (Near the mine) -gather for coffee and debriefing at a location to be decided. Hello Summerland Activists! This just in from my friend, Liisa Tella, a retired, special law librarian. I trust this is of some help. Just back from a round of wine-tasting at Upper Bench and Township 7. Wanted to pick up some more of UB's Chardonnay and taste the new vintage release of T7's Sauvignon Blanc. Had wonderful tastings and chats at both wineries. Trevor, Manager at Township 7, is a most interesting chap and we spent about half an hour talking at the tasting counter.

Earlier, Lady Dar was at a church related seminar at the Blue Church, (Where we will partner in bridge, Josinta!), from 9:00 am-2:00 pm. I took advantage of the glorious day to go for an exhilarating ride out towards Chute Lake, but only going as far as the first cattle guard. Funnily enough, on the return jog who should I see but Fillipo and Jack Rabbit Slims, coming the other way, as I passed Marichel Winery, on the same road where Naramata Goil lives. For our part life goes extremely well. The latter's current Merlot, (2014, 13.5%), release is fabulous and extremely well priced, ($23 with Wine Club discount), so I recommend it most highly!

In 2003 my late - much missed - husband and I rode the Kettle Valley before the trestles burnt down. We swam in the lakes along the way and then ended up in Naramata and all that wine, stayed next door to Lake Breeze. Lovely. Hi Terrible, Lazy Speller! I sent this along yesterday but in case you missed message while reading Spelling & Grammar for Dummies, this is what Champagne said. A quick search revealed that it is "a rare chronic autoimmune disease marked by muscular weakness without atrophy, and caused by a defect in the action of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions." Charlie said that he is taking a plethora of pills but condition is treatable and he has almost completely recovered.

This being the case, he wanted to try and connect when I'm in town, although the bridge night at the Penguin's is out. Too tiring, at this point. Lady Dar was off, at 9:00 am to an eco-seminar at the Blue Church on Main and Eckhard, across from Theo's. On until 3:00 pm so we won't go to the Home & Reno Show until tomorrow. When she's back, we'll take a run to Township 7 to taste two new vintage releases: the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, from the stony soils of North Bench Oliver, and the 2016 7 Blanc a mélange of Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Viognier and Riesling. Dusty would be happy! However, of late, I've been truly impressed with a number of their higher end reds, Rosita!

Just printed out my Greyhound tickets and I will arrive, all going well, at 1:30 pm, Wednesday, March 8th, at the Greyhound Terminal, 1150 Station St, (604) 683-8133. A pub session at some local brewery, after you and your limo collect me, sounds terrific. However, in my email dealings with Champagne Charlie, (According to him, he is suffering from a multitude of pains in the body." Apparently, "things" are, more or less, under control.), he would like to meet somewhere, just for a brief visit.) Now that I have my itinerary I will contact him and see where he and O Susannah would like to rendezvous. He had mentioned, earlier, that somewhere near Granville Island would be possible. If you have a local brew pub around there, or Olympic Village, perhaps we could chose that spot. Only real condition I have is that place should be quiet enough to be able to visit without shouting!

Hi Patrick lovely to hear from you, you sure have a busy life, and seem to settled well in Penticton. But you are such a social person, it comes easy to you. I am not sure when and if we come to the Okanagan, Lore is going to Germany May/June for 4 weeks. We shall see, we have not even talked about it.

I am busy with baby-sitting and of course my volunteer work, children's hospital, Symphony, Opera. Roman ( Masha's son) lives in PoCo and i am often out there to look after little rascal Sebastian. Usually I stay over night, Roman works from home, Tessa works 2 days a week out-side the home. Therefore there is always need for baby-sitting. I am in good health, for the age of almost 83 I am doing well. Well my friend say Hi to Corinne, and thanks for the pics. Love Gisela

HI Thanks for the up date. Are you going to be in Vancouver from March 28th to April 5th. I will be there at that time. I don't think I can get to the Okanagan, but who knows! I am going to Yellowknife on March 17th and staying until March 23rd. Then I am going to Campbell River until March 28th. Then I am going to visit with Al and Aline until the 6th. I would love to visit, but you are so far away. Who knows, maybe I jump into a car and visit for a day! How long is the drive?

You sound great, I wish I wrote like you, but as you have experienced over the years, I write short and sweet emails. Our life is good, kids are great, and we still have no grandchildren - darn.

We are on tender hooks waiting for Sam and Kayla to find out where their residencies will be. Canada has rejected the two of them so off to the states. We hear if they are accepted on March 13th. They are a couples match and that tends to decrease the odds of getting back into Canada. However, why would Canada want 2 young Canadians that scored in the 1st percentile of the Canadian exams and are graduateing with distinction from a prestigious Irish university? That is a rhetorical question.

We are going to lose 2 more talented young people to the states. Our medical system doesn't seem to care. Do you think I am annoyed? Yes I am, but the American programs are way more interested in Canadians than our Canadian medical programs. It really is Canada's loss. I have seen it over and over in the past few years. There is a doctor shortage, but our medical administrators are not addressing the real issues. They keep their head in the sand and collect their pay checks. If we get together, I can tell you more. You probably don't want to hear about it after the above information.

Enough of that, we am leaving St Maartens tomorrow, we were here for 3 weeks only this year, too little. Now we are heading back to the cold, brrrr! You guys sound great, thanks for the email update. Love Rhoda

Hi Translator Toshi! Wonderful that things went so well in Whistler! Bravo, indeed! Congratulations and thanks for lovely snaps. Glad you are safely home! Lady Dar returned this past Wednesday, just in time to play bridge! We hosted two tables that night. I was worried she might not arrive at all or be quite late, as snow warning was out on the Coquihalla. Fortunately, for all concerned, bus was only about 20 minutes behind schedule so pretty good considering driving conditions. Etta and Duke were delighted to see her, of course.

Didn't take her long and she was back into the swing of things with various meetings of all sorts! Tomorrow she will be discharging her regular Friday volunteer duties on the Information Desk at Penticton General Hospital, from 8:00 am-12:00 noon and then playing Mah Jong from 2:00 pm-5:00pm afterwards. So she might as well still be away. Just me and the cats!
 

On Saturday we plan to go to the Home & Reno Show at the Penticton Trade & Convention Centre as Lady Dar had all sorts of ideas for changes to the house while at Falcon! I'm sure you won't recognize the place when you return with your darling Mom! Must away, dearest Toshi as I need to split some kindling. Thank you again for such a lovely visit. You know Pat, I will be back on Monday night as mom did not want a funeral and so we are only going up for 4 days to do a few things that need to be done and then we will go back later in the spring or summer for a graveside service and to do what we need to do with her townhouse. Hi Janet! So very pleased to hear that you seem to be managing well. With respect to hosting bridge, I was just going to send out a message to others involved to ask where we might play. If, as you say, you are still willing and able to host, that would be much appreciated. I'm also very glad that we'll have a chance to see you in person.

This being the case, shall I still put you down for the lasagna? I'm going to request that others choose one of either an appetizer, salad, vegetable dish or dessert. Does that sound fine? Everyone will bring hootch, it almost goes without saying!

We hosted two tables, ourselves, this evening. Lady Dar was just back from Vancouver, via bus, [She flew to Winnipeg on Valentine's Day to spend two weeks with Rosita and Dusty. Both of them, along with Corinne, have asked me to pass along their deepest sympathy. Clara and Dusty remembered your Mom from playing bridge with O Susannah and Champagne Charlie.], and I was worried she might not arrive at all or be quite late, as snow warning was out on the Coquihalla. Fortunately, for all concerned, bus was only about 20 minutes behind schedule so pretty good considering driving conditions.

At any rate, let me know what you think about menu and timing, 6:00 pm +/-?

A few weeks ago she and her husband, Aarturo, came for dinner while Lady Dar was in Manitoba; About two weeks ago Duke started perching on my shoulders while I brush my teeth! With Lady Dar back, last night was the first time I was able to capture this "parrot" behaviour! He really is quite a character.

Hello, yet again, Janet! I just re-read your last message and didn't realize that you were probably asking "turkey" or "beef" lasagna. I read it as Turkey it bee! For my part, I suggest turkey as I think many people are eating much less beef these days. I had my annual physical this morning and my GP counseled just that. I remarked that we tend to eat chicken and fish and Lady Dar uses ground turkey for her delicious meatloaf/meatballs, stuffed sqaush/zucchini, etc. Cheers, Mouth-Watering Patrizzio! My preference as well.

With respect to the game, next week, I will be far, far, away, playing bridge, among other things, in Vancouver. However Madcop Michaelo will be back from Cuba/Calgary and will probably be available. I'm happy to coordinate if folk will let me know who is interested in hosting and who will play. Next Wednesday is International Women's Day and there is an event on at Gyro Park, from 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm, which Lady Dar plans to attend. She could/would come afterwards. Not sure if any others of The Sisterhood wish to do so as well. Anyway, let me know what you think and I'll plan accordingly, on your behalf.

On the matter of the GFA Bridge fund-raiser, Friday, March 17th, [St Patrick's Day so I am guaranteed to win!], I will be partnering with Josinta while Naramata Goil will team with Olga Polga. If anyone else in the group is interested, please let me know, in the next week, or so, and I will submit the names to the co-ordinator. You don't necessarily need to have a partner as GFA will assign you one if needs be.

Josinta and I played in last year's event and had loads of fun. $20 gives you a delicious lunch, [10:00 am- 2:30 pm, at the Blue Church in Penticton, corner of Eckhardt and Main], and an opportunity to support a worthy cause. Level of play varies but nobody is critical. Everyone wants to enjoy playing with and meeting new people. Hello Bridge Folk! Not sure if any of you knew, but Janet's wonderful Mother, Gladys, (aka Gladys Knight and the Pips), died a number of days ago. Janet was planning to host the bridge night next week, but when she contacted me she didn't think she would be back from Cranbrook in time to do so. This has turned out not to be the case and she will be back and wishes to host!

I was just about to send out a different message when I learned that she was still able to do so. Very pleased, of course, to hear that she seems to be managing well, under the circumstances. I'm also very glad that we'll have a chance to see her in person.

So far O Susannah, Champagne Charlie, Ragin' Bull and I are confirmed. Legs, are you alive and well and living in Vancouver? If so, are you interested and available? Same goes for you, Mick, or are you at Whistler, along with Renege Woman? Polly offered to host, initially, until she realized, months later, that she was off on a bridge junket with The Sisterhood!

Since we are hoping to have two tables we require at least three more players so if anyone knows of other possible candidates, (Champagne, your neighbours with whom we've played. Mick, your Winnipeg friends? Legs, Rosebud and Masher? Ragin', Sondra and Mama-San? Elaine, I know you and Theodorakis will be in New York, power grandparenting, but what about any of your friends? Marian? Liz? ), please let me know as soon as you can, along with choice of menu items. I will opt for an appetizer as I'm on the hoof and it will be easiest for a non-localoid. Celery sticks and CheezWhizzzzzzzz okay? Sarge, [Can we borrow one of your card tables?], is curling earlier in the evening but he will drop by, once his match is finished, to have more than a drop!
