Swirling Leaves and Gusts of Wind Blues: Sunday, November 4th!

There is no great invention, from fire to flying, which has not been hailed as an insult to some god. -J.B.S. Haldane, scientist (5 Nov 1892-1964)

Happy Belated Halloween back to you, Ret and Dorothy  Very clever...thanks for sending. Winter is closing in but we fear not with 6 shovels and a snow blower at the ready. Cheers to y'all. Thanks for the wishes. Best to all of you from sunny Mexico. Agneta

Hello Squamish Two, et al! Thank you both for the wonderful weekend even though you over-stayed your welcome by about three days! However, the fabulous wine and scrumptious desserts more than made up for the outrageous bidding on Friday evening. Saturday's tastings on the Bench, (La Frenz, Little Engine, Moraine, Township 7), and then to Painted Rock were some of the best ever, since living here. Great that you could see Chloë's condo as well.

After I counted the silverware and you both left this morning, I joined The Sisterhood, as you know, at the Christmas Craft Fair at the PTCC. Chloë was there with Rebecca and her two girls, Avery and Ashlynn. [Lady Dar will "grandparent" Ashlynn on Wednesday as both her parents are on shift/or sleeping after night shift! I suggested Rosita teach Ashlynn how to bake muffins so the kitchen will be a disaster zone, I'm sure. When we bumped into them at the Fair, the girls were colouring at a booth and Ashlynn wanted, in true Freeloader fashion, to take one of the child-sized wooden chairs home with her. She tried to put it in her stroller! Your parenting skills are terrific, Kid Chelene!] Lady Dar picked up a few stocking stuffers, ornaments, and such and I bought her a pair of Alpaca socks to keep her tootsies warm. She wears them to bed, the thought of which makes my forehead sweat as I cannot sleep well unless my feet are out from under covers.

Lovely woman who owns Alpaca enterprise ships her wool to Alberta where socks are produced. She has twelve animals on a farm in Willowbrook, lovely valley west of See Ya Later Ranch, and I often ride in this area. She gave me her card and said we'd be welcome to visit anytime so I plan to ride there and Lady Dar can drive when we find the time for such an excursion.  Not tomorrow as she is working on the paving slabs we will set into the boulevard for walkways. Need to remove the grass and enough earth to have them flush with surface. Want to do this before it freezes, of course.

Once back from the Christmas Craft Fair I went for a glorious ride. Pretty brisk wind out of the SSE at 24 kph and I rode through waves of leaves at times, especially along Lakeshore. Quite thrilling, actually, in spite of the fact that gusts made it relatively tough cycling anytime I was headed into wind. This past Thursday we attended a very interesting and disturbing lecture of Wildfires and Climate Change and presenter opined that stronger and stronger winds will become a fact of life, for a variety of reasons. I've certainly noticed this since coming here three years ago.

Earlier in the ride, near the marina, I came across a handsome buck with a most impressive set of antlers. Wish I had had my camera as he really paid little, if any, attention to me, as I rode past, coming and going, as I turn around near the Tennis Club at the end of the road. He was munching on some shrubs near the water's edge. A few days before this I let Duke out at 5:30 am and there were three or four deer on the sidewalk, just up from our place. He stood on the mat, just outside the front door, rooted, his eyes locked on them! Great to be surrounded by such wildlife.

However, early morning, a day before, when I let him out there were three raccoons walking atop our neighbours fence, hardly bothering to give us their bandit-mask look. More worried about these critters as they could inflict mortal damage on any pets, (felines or canines), if an encounter is forced. First time I've seen raccoons here in Penticton, as opposed to many that came right onto our patio at Harbour Terrace in Vancouver. What with plump California Quail along our front street we are living in a game park! Map and Stats for ride:

Thanks for link to "Happiness" article, Ricardo. I'm pleased to know that your natural inclination towards extreme grumpiness, is in fact, the correct antidote to so much mindless, and often destructive "positivity", even though you are often ridiculously dyspeptic for no good reason! Redheads Unite! Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Album of this past weekend.

Hi all, Rick has asked if I would send out a notice for this week. The destination is the South Slope, up the Ashnola as far as the Ewart Cabin and then a long hike, hopefully to encounter some mountain sheep. You will: -meet at 0700 (yes, it is correct) at Home Hardware north parking lot in Penticton (0640 ay IGA in Summerland) -carpool and head for the Ashnola and the Ewart cabin. -hike, up Ewart Creek and Juniper Creek to the South Slope cabins, and return, likely via Starvation Flats and the Corkscrew. -come home and have a well-deserved rest!

Please remember to dress appropriately. It will likely be cold weather. There is no guarantee of seeing any sheep but, on a good day, the sights are pretty awesome. If you are interested in this trip, please let Rick know so he has an idea of interest and numbers. And have a great day! Cheers, Jim
