Hi, Patrick! Wow! It's snowing(^^) Looking forward to it!! I could change my flight to arrive in Vancouver on 11th! I arrive at 10:40am, and the flight to Pendicton is closet to evening both Air Canada and WestJet. Since I have a quite long waiting hours until the next flight, I'm thinking about taking bus (Greyhound) at 12:30 to Penticton. Or if it's difficult to catch, I will fly with around 18:00 airplane. Hi again, Toshi! Be terrific if you could arrive on February 11th as Chloë said she'd be happy to pick you up at the airport. Your timing might be tight, in terms of clearing customs and then getting to bus station, even with Chloë to drive you. Ticket price, for bus, which I quoted was for a senior rate so it will be more for you. At any rate, Chloë said she'd be happy to spend time with you if you choose to fly. You will have to decide as you should probably book your flight if you want to come here that way.

Unfortunately, with weather we are having of late, both here and in Vancouver, even flights could be problematic. All flights into Penticton were cancelled on Friday and we are not sure about today. However, one hopes that by next weekend, weather will have settled down. Life in Canada.

Anyway, I really wouldn't worry so just plan what you think is best and we'll act accordingly. Hello Pat! Finally have some time to do emails! Thank you for yours, and all the others in the past. Yes, I know I am the world's worst email correspondent, and I will try to be a model this new year. I really do appreciate receiving them, and know it can't be a one way street. 

Kjell got up to Silver Star without incident and then took me back down to Vernon to get my final Hep A+B shot before the trip. We had a final communal supper at the rental place. Very good company. The group have been together for many years now, and aside from Sharon and Mark I don't see any of them the rest of the year. It works out really well and I like them all. We are all very different but it is a lot of fun and interesting as a result. I had some great cross country skiing and had some pretty long days with distances of 15+ km. 

It was freezing cold Wednesday night and I lay awake worrying about whether the car would start in the morning or not, but in fact it wasn't as cold as I had thought it would be and it started right away! We drove back over the connector to Merritt and then south. Absolutely beautiful weather and spectacular scenery. 

To our surprise we made better time than expected through the Fraser Valley and Vancouver, and made the 5pm ferry with lots of time to spare. Then it was just the drive up Island. Dry roads so the visibility was fine and we made it home in good time.
 

House was freezing but it warmed up quickly and it was good to be back. Now it is full steam ahead planning for Cuba. Have you and Corinne been to Cuba? Lots of details to attend to. It was 20 years since I was there and this will be a totally different trip. First of all there will be two of us, and secondly I previously had my own transportation. Snow today and everything is lovely. It was perfect snowball snow! As usual here the forecasts are all over the place, but we've decided not to get the road plowed.
 

I got my mobile phone unlocked but I'm not sure if I'll need it in Cuba, or if it would be worth is or not.

Kjell is cooking dinner tonight. He is making pyttipanna with leftover roast beef. Same as a hash really but I'm glad he is cooking.

When we came back there was noticeably more sunshine here just in the time we were away. The angle of the bluff behind us is on the same height as the trajectory of the sun in December and January, but now it arcs over the top of the bluff very nicely. Much appreciated!
 

Even before we go I'm looking forward to spring here and watching things start to grow and get going on projects. Also looking forward to seeing you and Corinne should you make it to the Island. Fondestos, as you would say, Jane

Hi Rosita! Sorry to hear about Dusty's fall but very pleased to learn that he didn't really hurt himself or break something! Keep the rum bottle closer to him so he doesn't have to move very far for a refill!

Yes, Pamela and Chloë arrived safely on Thursday, BUT, Pam's checked bag couldn't even be loaded onto the plane. She was told this even before it took off! You can imagine how pleased she was. We supplied her with a tooth brush and Lady Dar has given her some clothes. Chloë spent about an hour on the phone, yesterday, giving an Air Canada rep a going over, [You know how aggressive she can be! I was just chortling!], regarding whole process. I'll let Pam fill you in on all the details but she will receive $50 US, in the end, but has to fill out and mail in a gajillion forms, if you can believe it! 

Anyway, story gets worse as it has been snowing ever since Thursday night. I went out last night, around 10:00 pm, to do walks and back driveway as they were covered again, since when I'd done them earlier in the day! Same is true again this morning so I will start shoveling once I've sen this message. Don't really mind as it is very light snow and not overly cold. Etta and Duke love the snow and race all over, plowing through the small drifts which soon won't be so small. Unfortunately, all flights have been cancelled so Pam wil have to start wearing my underwear! Chloë doesn't care as she rather stay here with her kittens but Pam may well have to think about taking the bus back to Vancouver if this weather doesn't break!

The Sisterhood will probably give you a call to give you an update and say hello to Dusty. Much Love and Fondestos from them. Glass table top as snow gauge as it's snowing cats and dogs and I need to shovel the walks before there are too, too many footprints! Just started snowing this morning. They are predicting up to 15 cms. Chaos reigns on the roads. Onward (slowly and with caution).... Paul

Hi Cautious, with good reason, Paolo! I gather Oak is causing all sorts of problems! Just in from shoveling our walks and back driveway. About 2" so a fair bit. A few flakes are still coming down but think heaviest fall is over, for now at least. As I was finishing back driveway I heard a loud crash and assumed it was one of he cats, knocking something over under the louvres. Turned out to be the water barrel. Frozen solid so I think it simply tipped over as ground upon which it sat is slightly uneven. Fortunately, no felines around or a person as had it fallen on a cat or a someone's leg, could have had serious consequences. As it was, it smashed the garden hose container so will need a new one, come Spring. Will have to make sure I attach stronger bands to barrel when I put it back in place, after ice thaws!

I just got the date to go to Canada yesterday. I don't have any plans until 16th in the morning to go to Whistler. It's also very nice of Chloe that she offer to let me stay at her place. There are so much that I would like to talk to you!!

Hi Toshi and Tomiko! If you are able to change your flight to arrive on the 11th then you will have a bit more time to visit. Flying from Vancouver, directly to Penticton is possible. Depending when your flight from Japan arrives, you could fly on to Penticton as there is an Air Canada flight here, leaving Vancovuer around 11:00 pm to land just before midnight. Chloë and Pamela were on last night's flight. As well, one leaves for Vancouver around 6:00 pm, every day so you could catch that back.

Bus is cheaper, ($85 vs around $400), than plane but will take you most of a day, (6-8 hours depending on highway conditions such as traffic, snow, etc.), each way. If you need any help with booking whatever mode of transportation you choose just let me know. Of course, we'll pick you up whichever way you decide to travel here. Small town so distances are not great. 

Take a look at either Air Canada or WestJet as both airlines fly here. Greyhound is bus company. You would leave from Vancouver airport if you fly, from Bus Depot on Terminal, not far from Science World. You should stay with Chloë when in Vancouver. She is out shopping with Pamela and Lady Dar at moment.

On the serious side, truly sorry to learn of your on-going back problems, Champagne. Almost nothing worse, as I well know from my own painful experience, over my squash playing career. I won't lecture you but be very careful with medication, both in terms of dependency as well as damage prolonged use can have on many of your internal organs. Single malt is a much better alternative! Weight is an issue, as I probably need not remind you, and strength of stomach muscles. Sit-ups with bent knees, 6 million every morning! Here endeth the lesson!

Much, much to tell but first I should say that I feel rather badly that I've not been in touch with you of late.Unfortunately, if you would like to see Corinne you would have to fly, or take the bus, from Vancouver to Penticton, [Lady Dar takes the bus quite regularly and it is fine.], almost as soon as you arrive in Vancouver as she will be flying to Winnipeg on February 14th. I will be staying at home, in part as we now have two cats, Etta and Duke, which we adopted from the SPCA last August. 

Depending on your schedule you could also come to Penticton after your business in Whistler is concluded but you will need to decide, given your overall schedule, finances, etc. You are welcome to stay here for as long or as briefly as you are able. It goes without saying that we are overjoyed to learn of your coming trip but feel badly that the timing and circumstances, such as they are, with respect to Corinne's planned trip to Manitoba. Anyway, let us know what you think and we'll plan accordingly.

Hi Liisa! Trust you are well and enjoying retired life! Before I fill you in on our latest visit with Kjell, I have a favour to ask, on behalf of close friends, Josinta and Aarturo, from my hiking group. They live in Summerland and, along with many others in the community, are actively opposing a proposed seniors care facility which could affect the fish hatchery, and many other things, as well, there:
Summerlanders for Sensible Development, on Facebook, provides quite a bit of background information. They have asked me if I might be able to do a search on development projects, approved by municipalities, but subsequently went "wrong" for whatever reasons, (faulty engineering, lack of due diligence, etc), leaving the municipality liable and open to being sued, leaving the taxpayers to foot the bill. They would much appreciate knowing about such cases, because they believe this could happen to Summerland with the proposed Bristow Valley development. They are particularly concerned about slope instability, [although exponentially increased vehicular traffic, noise pollution  and view obstruction are key issues as well], prospect of a landslide and ensuing, catastrophic environmental damage to cliffs and watershed which would certainly result in the devastation of hatchery below.

Hi Pauline! Too, too bad but at least you will be engaging in two of my favourite activities. However, penalty for reneging, as you well know, is pretty stiff so you had better be prepared to pay the piper at some point in the not too, too distant future. Patrick you are the King of emails my friend. I know you are a professor but were you also a writer? I'm glad that things are going well and that you are both happy. The sleepy photo in the chair is my favourite. The mission was one of my all time favorite movies of all time, when they are all walking with that beautiful music score and they are getting shot and killed and they keep picking up that cross and walking. Still makes me tear up. Ah life! 

Hi again, Sensitive New Age Male and Man-on-a-Mission! Thanks for the market update on Cannery Row. Of late, Lady Dar and I, and Chloë, of course, have been discussing what we plan to do with the Loft. At the moment, we re still trying to decide if we wish to cut our links to Vancouver, at least in terms of owning property there. I know that Chloë has had a number of discussions with an agent who had sold one, or perhaps two units in the building, over the past six months or so. To be quite frank, I do not know what her feelings are about him, should we decide to sell. I have forwarded your message to her and we will chat about next steps, should there be some.

Lady Dar will be in Vancouver at the beginning of March and I will be there a week or so later, staying with Flamin' and Sarge, so perhaps one or both of us, separately, obviously, could arrange to meet, depending on everyone's schedules, again depending on how we wish to proceed. This may seem obvious but I should say, from the very outset, that if we do decide to sell, I want to go for the highest price, play hardball all the way, given market and the fact that we don't necessarily, need to sell. I am having a lovely week in Vancouver but I will be back in Naramata in time for the Super Bowl��😊 The first Thursday of the month would work for me. I first met Brian back in 1976 or 1977 when he was teaching part-time in the Faculty of Ed. His wife, Gillian, was in my Library School Class, but he didn't go to LS until the '80's, I believe. Hello Silver Star Ski Buffs, et al! Trust all went well on your drive north, Kjell. I suppose you won't read this missive until you are back, across The Salish Sea, and ensconced at home. At any rate, just wanted to say how much we enjoyed your stay, Kjell, although Jane was missed terribly! Hope we'll see both when you are back, Marcello.

Spent a fairly lazy day after you left, trying to catch up on mountains of email before spending an hour outside, chopping kindling and then sweeping up a large tub of oak leaves, exposed when snow melted. Of course, the felines were supervising when not chasing the leaves blown hither and yon by the strong breeze. Lady Dar had a knitting session in the evening so I spent more time with Etta and Duke, both napping near the fire.

Will be off to the pool for a deep-water session this morning and then we are playing bridge this evening, in Summerland. Chloë and Pamela, Lady Dar's sister, in Vancouver, from Winnipeg, on business, will fly into town, late Thursday night, to stay for the weekend so we are looking forward to their visit. Next week is already shaping up as a very busy one with two dinners, with friends, one at a restaurant in Summerland with a jazz concert. Grogg and Lurchesca arrive on Saturday for two nights, back from Banff.

Again, thanks for the lovely wine and tangerines, Kjell! I'm about to have a couple in my yogurt this morning. Fondestos from Lady Dar, chiding me to lay a fire. Following question for Patrizzzzzio, and/or Lady Dar, With your library connections, can you yourself or ask one of your connections in a (law) library to do a search on development projects that were approved by municipalities, but gone wrong for whatever reason (faulty engineering, etc) afterwards and the municipality was made liable and was sued.

Hello Summerland Activists! I will forward your query to a number of friends but you should also investigate the suit which was brought against Naramata, a number of years ago, now, when a businessman successfully sued the district for a substantial amount, (in the millions, I believe.), over water, as I recall, for breach of contract, I think. Anyway, the council made some mistake and hence  was liable. I don't know the exact details but I think it would be worth your while as a very germane, local precedent since all the taxpayers/ratepayers had to foot the bill! 'Ain't Life Grand!
