Dr Kunimoto and The Skin Clinic Blues: Wednesday, October 30th!

Great literature is simply language charged with meaning to the utmost possible degree. -Ezra Pound, poet (30 Oct 1885-1972)

Hi to all Well, we finished the trek and my knees are ever so grateful that there are no more stairs, slippery rocks or hills to climb and descend. Trek was amazing and luckily for us the monsoon rains washed away parts of the trail on our last day adding an hour & 40 minutes to the detour. So instead of a gruelling 8 hour hike we ended up taking a taxi for $200 to our last stop and spent the day hiking around the temples & waterfall. A few who did walk the trail said several trees had fallen plus it was extremely muddy & slippery and no views like the other 4 days. At least that is what they told us and we are happy to believe them.

We began our trip in Osaka and spent 4 days trying to figure out the transit system, money & food, not quite successfully but at least we are more comfortable. We’ve been eating our way through Japan with meals far surpassing what we were fed in Nepal and Bhutan. We’ve not had any spam but lots of sashimi, grilled fish for breakfast along with miso soup, chicken, pork, tofu, eggs, rice, etc, etc.

I must say I really miss my bed and pillow. The mattresses are quite thin and firm (not to mention being on the floor) and the pillows are filled with plastic beads that hurt my head. We have just spent the last 2 days visiting my relatives in Tottori, an area famous for the sand dunes. This exhibit at the sand museum is based on the eastern world.

For 2 days we had been treated like royalty. My cousin arranged for a photographer & interpreter to come everywhere with us on our ”Fujii Family” bus. His scheduled itinerary kept us going from 8:45 am to 9 pm. The 2nd morning we were greeted by a reporter from the local newspaper who followed us around taking pictures and even interviewing me. Dinners last 3 hours as you are supposed to slowly digest your food, drinking beer & sake. Problem is the moment you put your chopsticks down, another dish magically appears!

I’m totally exhausted from being entertained and trying to entertain. My face hurts from smiling but I am so very honoured to have met such wonderful generous caring relatives. My biggest regrets are that I could not communicate directly and that I did not get to know them years earlier. I look forward to hosting them in Vancouver although it will be a very tough act to follow.

We have just arrived in Naoshima where there is an art exhibit taking place all over the island. We spend a couple of days here, tben to Hiroshima and lastly Kyoto. Everyone has been so gracious and friendly, even excusing me for my ignorance with the language. I’m so happy to be here. Love Elaine

Hello Plastic Beads in My Pillow Woman!

Thank you for the wonderful pictures but sorry to learn that you are not sleeping well! We can sympathize with you on that account as we experienced much the same, as far as mattresses on the floor and almost nowhere to put any clothes. Still, you relatives sound like incredible people and I'm sure they have more than appreciated your visit, completely exhausting though it be! Travel ain't easy, that's for sure!

On the home, [yours!], front, thank you for allowing us the luxury, sheer luxury of staying. we certainly appreciate it and have more than enjoyed our time here. On a more worrisome note not sure if you have been following what has been happening in California under such devastating attack from the ferocious winds and the terrible wildfires these howling demons have fed and fueled. David and Nancy, in Berkeley, had a large oak tree fall on their roof a week or so ago, now, but apparently, [unbelievably], the damage to was minor. Have not had any word from the Coffaros and assumed they might well have had much graver issues to contend with of late, let alone probably being without power, although their winery, etc., is running on solar panels. Last we heard, Healdsburg had been evacuated and, by chance, I heard an employee from Robert Young Estate Winery interviewed by Laura Lynch on CBC's Radio One, The Current, this morning and she said the Kincaid fire had threatened the winery but staff and firefighters, with the considerable help of the vineyards as firebreaks, managed to save the buildings and homes on the property. As this winery is about 5 miles southeast of Geyserville I assume Coffaro Winery has not been threatened but wonder if this is the case if Heladsburg has been evacuated. I plan to send Pat a short message to see how they are, praying for the fact that they and winery are safe.

We arrived on Sunday after stopping in Sunshine Valley to have lunch with friends, Colleen and Al, and then on into Vancouver to stay at your place. That evening we walked over to near Kits Pool to have dinner with Matt and Catherine, just back from a month in Japan as Matt wanted to attend about four World Cup Rugby matches! [Did you bump into them!] Lovely dinner and actually watched the to-semi final games, [recorded], with Glasgow while The Sisterhood discussed plans Catherine has for their new condo. They've only been in possession for two months, one of which was in Japan, so loads Catherine wishes to change. She will start without Matt as he was off to The Canary Islands, next morning, for ten days to go hiking with fellow classmates from medical school!

Next day we ran errands, collecting baby gear, [folding bassinet, car seats, clothes, etc.,], from a number of Chloë's friends, both in East Vancouver. Had hoped to see Flash but a last minute job came up and he had to cancel to go to a shoot. This being the case, I then dropped Lady Dar off at Granville Island as she was to meet Joanne, former neighbour at Harbour Terrace, for a walk and then lunch. I plugged car in at a charging station near Edibles and then popped in to GI Market to buy a couple of buns and some sliced meat for lunch. Took my purchases to Harbour Terrace to see if either Flamin' or Sarge were home. Flamin' was there so I made my sandwiches and we chatted until she took a nap. Unfortunately, she is still "struggling" with the effects of accident this past December. She is now seeing a neurologist specializing in concussion but do not know more than that or what prognosis is or will be. Very difficult and troubling of course.

After a couple of hours I collected car and drove back to Bayswater to start readying house for two tables of bridge. Had to set up one table, [From basement. Will showed me where legs were stored and took out one insert in dining room table and then found tablecloths, cards, etc. Took a bit of time as I wasn't sure where any of these items were kept. [Did find $2,000 US so I kept that as I know you won't miss it!] Anyway, managed to find everything I needed and shortly after I had finished Lady Dar came home. She'd had a great visit with Jo-Anne and we will see her again when we have dinner with F/S on Wednesday evening. Since she was being collected, by friend Robyn, for book club, at 5:30 pm I opened a bottle of red for her and we toasted our home away from home. Gang started arriving right on the dot of 5:00 pm so Lady Dar had a chance to visit with everyone before she left.

Was great to see many whom I'd not seen since I'd organized a similar gathering earlier this past spring, [or even further back in time than that], although we had seen Polly/Mick Carter in Naramata, this June, and Janet in July, in Penticton, when she came for dinner. Anyway loads of fun with plenty to eat, [pot-luck], and drink! Gang left just before 10:00 pm and I was almost finished tidying up by the time Lady Dar was back. She helped dry a few dishes and then we both turned in around 11:00 pm.

Lazy sleep-in until 8:30 am and after I zapped my java, [I "stole" a travel mug from Flamin' and filled it with last of the coffee she'd made when I was over.] Couldn't find any beans even thogh I emptied every drawer in the house!], I looked for more charging stations. Found one at Jericho Village, about ten minutes walk away, as you know, so planned to use it and then hoof it home. Unfortunately, both plugs were in use so I headed for station near Kits Pool but discovered I needed a Flo app on my iPhone. I thought it was a ChargePoint station, [That is how it was registered on map I used but I may have misread something.], and wasn't worried as we have a card. Knew I'd have to return to Bayswater to sign up as I hadn't brought along my phone, of course!

Had a call from Alastair while I was away and we arranged to meet at Kits when he was finished his day's shoot, around 1:00 pm, so that was great for both of us. Lady Dar went out to do a bit of grocery shopping than and when she came back she said she'd had her flu shop at Shopper's just around the corner. We'd wanted to get ours in Penticton but drugstore didn't have any vaccine on the day we could go. Decided I'd strike while the iron was hot and was able to get the Tdap shot, [tetanus, diptheria and pertussis, aka whooping cough], as well, because of the coming baby. As soon as I'd been "stabbed" I drove to Kits and was fumbling with the Flo app as Flash drove up in his jaunty Miata!

Thought I'd need him to help me initiate process but I managed to invoke right commands and plug released itself and car was merrily charging itself as we drove  back to Bayswater and after more "scouring" of your Elainecupboards, I found some coffee beans in the upstairs suite and we made some Industriale and enjoyed it while I showed him the snapolas I'd taken of Museum Fotoateliér Seidel, in Český Krumlov, as I knew he would be quite taken with it, given his own profession and interest in all things photographic. Had a grand time chatting while we viewed, about their lives and ours, and time was up all too quickly as he had to head back to his studio, around 3:00 pm as he'd promised a number of clients to have some things ready by end of today. Hope we might see him and his hareem before Christmas as they might stop by on the way to Christina Lake, [roughly two or three hours east of us], where they often spend Christmas at Kirsten's mother's cabin.

Waved goodbye and Lady Dar was back shortly thereafter. I headed off to send messages, [Of late, I've been sitting at your desk as I think the WiFi works better here as it kept kicking out upstairs and it was almost like living with dial-up!] until  Calamity Jane, [Whirlygig's amore. He lives on Galiano could not make it into Vancouver this week.], arrived for dinner. Lady Dar prepared garlic shrimp to have with gluten-free gnocchi, along with yellow, cherry tomatoes in Feta so it was a feast almost to compare to your wonderful meals, Elaine! After dessert, poached pear with drizzled chocolate sauce. Had a grand FaceTime chat with The Hermit of Galiano, [Whirlygig], and then I walked Calamity home as I had to collect our Kona, charging its little electric heart, at nearby Kits Beach! Back home to help dry last of dishes and then bed for both of us as it had been a long day.

Lazy sleep-in and then up to make java, using French Press I purloined from upstairs and bag of ground coffee from one of cupboards in basement. As I mentioned, we are having dinner with F/S this evening and they have said we should stay overnight. We've accepted as this way we can do bed linen and such, before we leave. I'm dropping Lady Dar at Van Dusen Gardens to have lunch with Nancy Halpern and then I'll head back to Kits Beach as I want to charge our car again. From there I'll walk over to Harbour Terrace until it's time for my appointment with my dermatologist, near VGH. Lady Dar will take bus back to GI in plenty of time to visit with Clan Sutherland.

Anyway, must away as I need to have a quick shower before we set out. Fondestos fromLady Dar to you, Elaine, and to Liz and Doug. Stay well. Travel safely. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: Flash yesterday afternoon! Calamity Jane that evening! Pumpkin not far from you place!

Lady Macbeth would have done well to have listened to this advice! A bubbling cauldron of magical wishes from Lady Dar and Patrizzio!

Hi Patrick. Have e-mailed Susan. Are we playing at your place Oct. 31st? Dianne Hi Lady Di! Yes, we are playing at our place on Thursday evening. I assume you are referring to carpooling on Monday, to Summerland. Judy Blue might wish to catch a ride with you two if that is convenient. If not she can ride with us. See you on Halloween! Cheers, Patrizzio! Thanks. I will e-mail Judy. Dianne

Hello Chateau Vicente! Sorry not to have been in touch sooner, especially since you and your state are under such devastating attack from the ferocious winds and the terrible wildfires these howling demons have fed and fueled. Do hope the damage to your roof was minor. Waved goodbye and Lady Dar was back shortly thereafter. Knew I wanted to reply to you and fill you in so headed downstairs to sit t Elaine's desk. I think the WiFi works better here as it kept kicking out upstairs and it was almost like living with dial-up! Anyway, must away as I need to walk back to Kits to collect car and be back when Calamity Jane, [Whirlygig's amore. He lives on Galiano could not make it into Vancouver this week.], arrives for dinner. Fondestos from Lady Dar, busy preparing seafood to have with gluten-free gnocchi, to you and Donna Floridian! Cheers, Patrizzio! PS: Had a fabulous dinner with gnocchi and shrimp, plus fried yellow cherry tomatoes and Feta cheese, poached pears for dessert, all care of Lady Dar!

Had a grand FaceTime chat with The Hermit of Galiano and then I walked Calamity home as I had to collect our Kona, charging its little electric heart, at nearby Kits Beach! Pics: Bridge last night; Flash this afternoon! Calamity Jane this evening! Duke, from Chloë!

Look at my handsome pups ❤️ A handsome lad indeed Mom Hi Cat Minder! I take it you were in the Rumpus Room with The Boy on your lap. Where was Ms Etta? Quite chilly here in Vancouver so am wondering what the temperature is like in Penticton. Had a touch of frost on the car windshield when I drove it to the charging station, about 10:00 am, this morning. Quite surprised, to be frank. Anyway, it has been glorious weather so cannot complain. Another busy day tomorrow with my doctor's appointment and then dinner with Flamin' and Sarge. Joanne has been invited so it will be terrific to see her. Love to you and your feline charges. Hope you are feeling better. Cheers, Dad!

Kari, Krissy and The Granville Island ChargePoint Blues: Monday, October 28th!

He who has provoked the lash of wit, cannot complain that he smarts from it. -James Boswell, biographer and lawyer (29 Oct 1740-1795)

Sent a few messages from Flamin's' kitchen. [I took my computer along this morning as had intended to stop in at Flash's studio to show him pictures of Museum Fotoatelier Seidel in Český Krumlov. When I 'd chatted earlier today he said he was free all day but when we called to say were close he begged off as he had an unexpected call and had to go to shoot.] I popped in after plugging car in near Edibles. Lady Dar is having lunch with JT and I had a brief visit with Flamin' before she went to have a nap. I'll be leaving around 2:20 pm to walk back to car and head to Elaine's to start set-up for bridge. Left a message for Sarge that if he feels like it perhaps he could bring a few bits of cheese and crackers for an appetizer but not to worry if he can't I'm sure there will be plenty of food.

What time do you think you will start Bridge Sarge Hi Sarge! Not sure. Will start as soon as we have four players. I assume this will be around 5:30 pm. Come when you can. Cheers, Patrizzzio! Hi everyone, Enjoy your evening with lots of fun and wishing' everyone good cards. I'm home again and the company leaves today. Although I can't make it tonight I hope to join you soon. Hugs to all, Olly Hi Olga Polga, et al! Just finished a fab evening of bridge/dinner with friends in Vancouver. Next bridge evening, in the Okanagan, is Halloween, Thursday, October 31st, at The Burns Street Bistro, anytime after 6:30 pm. Let me know, all who have not yet done so, if you will be joining the Bidding Ghouls! Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Bidding on Bayswater!

I won't be playing bridge on Halloween If you need an 8th for 2 tables let me know and I will join u on the 4th at jos Judy

Hi Judy Blue As far as I know, we'll need you to make up two tables. You are welcome to car pool with us. I believe Lady Di and O Susannah will be car pooling as well so if it is more convenient for you, you might ask to ride with them, otherwise we'd be happy to be chauffeurs. Let me know and we'll plan accordingly. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Safe travels and happy to hear you are keeping your minds sharp ! I wont be joining you on Hallowe’en. Cheers Carol Patrick, Do we need more score sheets printed? Susan Hi O Susannah! Hope you are feeling better. No, we have enough score sheet, thanks to you. Will be great to see you next Monday. I'll let Lady Di about carpooling with you. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!

This morning we ran errands, collecting baby gear, [folding bassinet, car seats, clothes, etc.,], from a number of Chloë's friends, both in East Vancouver. Had hoped to see Flash but a last minute job came up and he had to cancel to go to a shoot. I plugged car in at a charging station near Edibles and then popped in to GI Market to buy a couple of buns and some sliced meat for lunch.

Hi All,…and sorry I am so late to the proverbial "game". Have been laid up with the flu these last 5 days and this is my first day  out of bed and feeling almost human again. Will have to pass on bridge on Monday as I will likely fade by 8 pm and don't won't to spread any rogue flu germs. Have fun!! Love to Everyone and especially a big hug an well wishes to mama Chloe. Love, S

[Eyob Goitom Thank you, Patrick, for keeping us up to date. Family is doing well. My daughter Selam is in TO doing her masters in urban planning, and the two are in town working and leaving on their own. Shewa is well, we just returned from a three day retreat at Harrison. Glad to hear lady Dar and king Patrick are doing well. We always think of you, and hopefully we will make it to Penticton area one of these days.]

Tummler, regretfully, I cannot travel to the continent this week. I have to go to the big island, das capital, to do some legwork on some Budino Brothers (and Italocemente) 'holdings'.  I would happily host you and the bridge group at the Republic of Galiano anytime you are willing to take a short ferry ride from the main land.

[Eyob Goitom Nice picture, Janet]

Jane looks forward to seeing you both in person on Tuesday. I will join you on Facetime at some point in your visit to catch up and share some exciting news - and I don't mean just the sky rocketing value of Budino Brothers stock. Caio,
W&CJ y Morita

Hi George and Jane Sorry we won’t see you in person on Tuesday.
Jane we will come over around 5:30. Here is my cell if you need to make a change in time etc. What can we bring besides wine? Looking forward to seeing you. Hugs Corinne

World Rugy and The Glasgow Blues: Sunday, October 27th!

It is a curious thing that every creed promises a paradise which will be absolutely uninhabitable for anyone of civilized taste. -Evelyn Waugh, novelist (28 Oct 1903-1966)

Abandoned trapper's cabin in Sunshine Valley!
We arrived on Sunday afternoon after stopping in Sunshine Valley to have lunch with friends, Colleen and Al, [Burns Street Bistro sign was from them, just a day before Donna Florida and Cactus arrived!], and then on into Vancouver to stay at Elaine's place on 7th and Bayswater. That evening we walked over to near Kits Pool to have dinner with Matt and Catherine, just back from a month in Japan as Matt wanted to attend about four World Cup Rugby matches! Lovely dinner and actually watched the to-semi final games, [recorded], with Glasgow while The Sisterhood discussed plans Catherine has for their new condo. Hi, Patrick: I confirmed with Karen that she can join us. She doesn't want a late night, especially as she has a long commute home on transit (to North Burnaby), although the B-Line is close to the venue, which will be helpful. We'll endeavour to arrive shortly after 5 p.m. and Karen may not stay for the duration (leave around 8-8:30 p.m.) Hopefully, we can get in a few hands of bridge before her departure. J. Hi HH Woman! Sounds just fine. Looking forward to evening and seeing you both! Cheers, Patrizzio! PS: In answer to your question: "Hedgehogs. Why can't they just share the hedge?" Because they are just too, too prickly about allowing others into their preferred domain! I assume that I am 1 of the 7. Sarge. Yes and No, you are now 1 of 8! See you tomorrow evening. Cheers, Patrizzio!

My plan is still to bring a bit of sushi for an appy. Hope that is OK. A salad and rice would probably go with the chicken. Was just a suggestion if anyone was wondering what to bring. Polly Janet I think we should just send Pat for take-out. I am bringing a Greek salad. Branko Hi Penguin, et al! The more raw fish the better! I'll have a small iceberg waiting, [They are all melting anyway, Green Mick!], to keep the sushi cool, and Ragin' can chip off a few pieces for the two new malts I plan to pick up at Legacy! See everyone later tomorrow afternoon/early evening! Cheers, Patrizzio "I Spit on Global Warming" along with Donald the Denier!Pic: Glasgow watching recorded semi-final, Britain vs NZ, this evening!

Have not heard about David and Pat. Terrible fire storms but no climate emergency according to our world leaders. Hugs Corinne

Last Main Street Farmers' Market Blues: Saturday, October 26th!

Hello Hedgehog Woman and O Susannah!  Would be wonderful to see you both, to catch up and bid, wildly and erratically, [What has changed?], so please let me know if you are interested and able to attend. We are having a pot-luck dinner. [So far chicken casserole, sushi appetizer and dessert, so more appetizers or a vegetable dish or salad would be appreciated. I'll fill in any menu gaps.] Thanks. Fondestos from Lady Dar, waiting to stroll down to last Farmers' Market of the season, to you both. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi, Patrick. I would be happy to join you for bridge and contribute to the potluck -- thanks for the invite. Also, I'm not sure if you received my previous email, but I would bring 2 packages for hand-delivery to Chloe.

Regarding the potluck, I am in a huge state of disruption (again) due to a long overdue repainting. But I'll try. I could easily bring (homemade, but from freezer) any or both of . . . dessert platter (Waldorf slice, pumpkin cheesecake squares and apple cake) and macaroni-and-cheese casserole. But I could do simple appies or salad too, if you prefer (or as well).

Regarding bridge, my skills are limited, although halting efforts at improvement are underway . . . tell you more when I see you. To that end, I'm trying to see if I can get Karen to come along as my coach. But you could think of us as "one player." Karen could also be a resource for others (if desired). She's quite good at that -- able to provide objective guidance even having seen others' hands. She is now very accomplished, playing at the local club in Kerrisdale at least once a week, participating in tournaments, etc. At the same time, she is quite good-natured and patient. Let me know about your specific potluck wishes (re: above) and if you have any objection :-) to Karen joining us. Also . . . what time? Thanks, Janet

Hi Hedgehugs! Simply wonderful that both you and Karen will be able to attend. Don't disparage your bridge skills! You are an accomplished player but I'm sure rest of gang will be more than delighted to have Karen's advice. Great that we'll have a chance to see her as it has been quite sometime.

Thanks for generous offer of food. Although we have one dessert already, I know how scrumptious/delicious your baking is so if you would like to put together a smallish platter along with a mac-and-cheese casserole that would be terrific. Latter if your current state of disruption makes things a tad more difficult. Thanks. Yes, I did remember you had mentioned you had something for Chloë so that is very kind. Thanks again.

Must away as we are off to Chloë's place. We enjoyed last regular Farmers' Market, [Three Winter Markets, inside at Shatford Centre, in November and early December, much smaller but still loads of fun.], this morning and will head over to Winnipeg Street shortly. I will use a weed-eater to cut/trim the small patch of grass she has in her tiny back yard and strip at the front, while Lady Dar helps her hang picutres. Close friend Katie, from Vernon, will be down from Vernon, for the night, to help/visit as well.

Yesterday, Mike, our kitchen contractor, was over to take a look at her basement and we are very pleased that he thinks it will be relatively "easy" to finish the place and turn it into a comfortable suite with fairly large bedroom/living room, bathroom and kitchen with dining nook. Even if she cannot afford appliances at the moment, he will allow/build spots for both a dishwasher and stacking washer/dryer. Also a number of large cupboards for a pantry, storage, etc. First order of the day is that we need to talk to a building inspector to determine if she needs a building permit. I popped into City Hall after meeting and collected a card for one of the inspectors so I'll send him a message, outlining work she has in mind. If no permit or drawings are required, (All internal work but plumbing might well need an inspection.), we hope that work can start in the next few weeks.

Hello to Karen. Looking forward to seeing you both in a few days. I've suggested people can arrive anytime after 5:00 pm but simply come when schedules allow. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio! Hi Ragin'! Just a quick note to ask you to bring one of your famous Greek salads, if that is fine with you. Rest of menu seems to have fallen into place.  Looking forward to seeing you. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio/Il Conduttore!

Today, went for longest ride since being back. Wind out of the NNW at 30 km/h gusting to 44 km/h although by the time I was headed home I only had the benefit of a tail wind pushing me along at 26 km/h, gusting to 37 km/h. Hadn't been to Crescent Beach, in Summerland, since before my shoulder operation, so it was great to enjoy that route again, in spite of the very strong headwind on outward bound leg. Sweet Alibi and the Basement Suite Blues: Friday, October 25th!

A painter is a man who paints what he sells; an artist, on the other hand, is a man who sells what he paints. -Pablo Picasso, artist and sculptor (25 Oct 1881-1973)

Dear Patrick and Corinne Just a quick note before we leave London. We have enjoyed our visit here very much and tried to visit some of our favorite places and just enjoy. The weather has been a mix of rain, sun and cloud and fortunately yesterday after being a very rainy day it started to clear as we left the National Gallery. The clouds and sky were Contable-like and Lord Nelson's monument soared high in the air and we looked fondly across to Canada House. If my leg hadn't been so tired we would have tried to walk to the parliament buildings but alas I had to give it amiss and we just boarded a bus and headed to King's Cross.

There is just too much to see and do in London and this time round the crowds at all the venues and the intensity of the people travelling on the tube have been really noticeable. There are alot of people in this city. We discovered a new bus route that I love C10 and even though the bus was not a double decker one it afforded a great trip from Victoria station across the Thames and over to the Surrey quays. We also really loved our walk along the canal near Kings Place and leading into Camden Town. The next day we walked to Camden Town again and I valued visiting the many thrift stores--Oxfam, Cancer Research, Mental Health, Scope, and British Heart Foundation.

For the first time we actually visited St. Pancras church and in the Crypt there was an art exhibit called Earth is Calling. The exhibit used recycled materials and involved multimedia. Being held in the crypt was excellent as the underground venue was unique. Yesterday we had lunch at the St. Martin in the Fields Crypt which of course is always fun. I like their gift shop and it was great to have tea and a scone as I was tired after visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Great portraits of Ed Sheeran, Irish Murdoch, Doris Lessing and Elton John in the gallery as well as two new ones of Philip and Queen Elizabeth.

Anyways we are off to Gatwick. Fortunately our flight with Norwegian Airlines is well on track and it would seem that Norwegian has been restored--prior to this we had been worried that the airline may go under. I understand that Flair Airlines is suffering. We will be in Boston next and then onto New York. Our suitcases are so heavy we can hardly move them. It is ever thus even though I try each time not to carry so much or purchase things. Books are a killer.

Bye for now and we hope that you are well and that you are getting ready for a great Halloween. Lots of love for now Jo-Anne and Colin Hello Boston Bound Jet-Setters! Thank you both for the wonderful travel epistles from Liverpool, [I apologize for not replying to Colin's query, from train to Liverpool, October 14th, but we were just recently back and had much to do, as you can well imagine, world travelers that you are! Also thoroughly enjoyed your wonderfully detailed description of Liverpool. Unfortunately, we've never had the chance to explore the city on any of our UK visits, to date, but will try to rectify this based on your experiences. Closest I've come was when we were travelling back to Canada, by ocean liner, in the 50's, and we left from Liverpool a number of times.], and now London.

I agree, there is so much to do in this incredible city. Just walking around the history drenched streets is exhilarating. In the past, we have made "surgical strikes" on various museums and galleries, for an hour or two, [Given entrance fee is by donation one doesn't mind not spending the entire day in a given spot and be able to leave before sensory overload dulls one's ability to absorb.], and then walk outside for a bit. We have been to a number of noon hour concerts at St Martin-in-the-Fields and then usually enjoy the tasty cafeteria-style lunch in the Crypt. We have also enjoyed many art exhibitions there, last one mounted by Miniaturists of Inner London, (or some such name), an incredible breadth of work depicting scenes of this part of The City. I find the National Portrait Gallery is "manageable" and simply fascinating, it goes without saying, but prefer to "hit" The Impressionists and/or Constable, per esempio, at the National Gallery before becoming glassy-eyed, while The Elgin Marbles and/or the Assyrian collection, and/or the Egyptian mummies, at the British Museum, with a walk-around the Rosetta Stone, thrown in for good measure, are favourites.

On one of my most recent forays, 2010, I believe, I "tagged onto" an immensely interesting, guided tour, of American high-school students, either bored or hung-over, or both, and ended-up asking questions, of the extremely knowledgeable guide, [Quite a process to become licensed I learned after the tour concluded.], much to the consternation of the teacher but to the relief of the students, absolved of responsibility, who simply didn't realize what they were missing. Pearls before swine! Have always wanted to do the "free" walking tours, [One usually tips guide.], especially of Inns of Court, but have never had the time! Ones we did this past trip in Vienna, Budapest, Ljubljana, Dubrovnik and Český Krumlov were simply wonderful as were ones in Paris in 2013. Our groups were always manageable, (under 15), and provided a tremendous overview of time and place, a real sense of local history, social and political, in the context of larger continental and world events.

You must travel with Lady Dar, in future, as the museum and gallery shops are almost more important than the collections themselves! [Also the thrift stores.] If we happen to pass something but don't have the time, or energy, for the museum or gallery she insists on visiting the shop! Sorry to hear about your leg. To a certain extent, Lady Dar was limited to how much walking she could do, particularly over the course of the first three weeks, based on how her left calf was reacting. She pulled something a week or so before we left and discomfort would re-surface, from time to time.

With respect to baggage, I understand completely. However, this time, I must say I am rather proud to proclaim, I severely limited what I took and only had a large knapsack, (which I checked), and a small back-pack, (laptop, toiletries and one change of clothes, [underwear, shorts and a couple of tops, all quick-drying material], in case checked-luggage didn't arrive. This happened to Lady Dar and her bag wasn't delivered until our second day in Vienna! Luggage wasn't as much of an issue when we had our rental car but once we started flying and taking buses and trains we were not hostage to our bags. I had left quite a large bag, with friends in France, in Chabeuill, so I was able to amalgamate clothes I wouldn't need for Paris and any souvenirs we'd purchased, in it and for rest of trip "lived" out of another small back-pack that I'd left there as well. Made life getting to Paris and, once there, far easier. Lady Dar was worried I'd have to pay the horrendous "overweight" levy but my checked bag was only 17.7 kg, 5 kg below limit.

Closer to home we've been pretty busy around the house and garden, particularly doing fall clean-up in the latter. Turned off the water to both outside faucets, [This necessitates me heading into the crawl space and inching along on my poor knees to different shut-off valves, miner's lamp atop my head, through cobwebs quite appropriate for Halloween!], this past week and are gradually emptying our four rain barrels. Had one at front of house split last winter. I thought there was enough room for ice to expand as it is open at the top but not so. Will turn on the tap near the bottom until each barrel is empty to that level. Have a number of short hose fittings that I can attach to the spout to let the water drain away from the foundations and will leave them in place until the tempertures drop below freezing.

Want to clean out our eaves-troughs as well but will wait until the leaves are down. Many will be blown away today as there is a wind warning in effect, expected to reach 90 km/h out of the south, so no riding for me, just shoulder exercises. That being said I enjoyed a fabulous ride, (Fourth since being back home. Orthopod and physio both wanted me to wait until after vacation to ensure everything having to do with new joint was well healed and set.), to Naramata this past Wednesday. Head wind was out of the north at 15 km/h so not really much resistance. First time I've cycled this route since before my shoulder operation. Went about 2 km beyond where Lynne and Peter used to live, (to log the distance I wanted, 51 km), and thought about all the wonderful times we'd spent there with them, as well as in Penticton. Have had notes from both of them and they are settling into Victoria quite nicley. Peter is still consulting and was en route to Madagascar when he sent his missive. Believe he will be in Cuba and Brazil before Christmas! Map and Stats for ride:

Spent last weekend in Osoyoos, at Spirit Ridge, attending the AGM. Had a grand time. Flamin' and Sarge were there so we spent time with Clan Sutherland when not at Saturday's AGM and dinner. Chloë moved in to our place to take care of Etta and Duke so she enjoyed spending time with them as she has been so busy that she didn't see much of them when we were in Europe. Good friend, Dame Judith, moved in for the six weeks we were away. This past Tuesday, Maya's mother, Lynette, stayed overnight. She had been visiting her sister and mother who live in Vernon. She left for Courtenay, where she lives, on Wednesday and that evening I attended The Last Black Man in San Francisco, [Heard director interviewed, on CBC's Q, this past summer.], at the Kitchen Sink, [PAG's Kitchen Stove but I prefer the former!], series at the Landmark. I enjoyed it immensely but my "cousin" Michelle Dunn and her amore, Antonio found it very confusing, (couldn't follow much of the "Black" street dialogue), and far too long, according to Tony. Had little difficulty myself and didn't agree with latter criticism.

Closing credits were still running when I had to dash to the Lakeshore Hotel for a Grandmothers for Africa fund raiser. Lady Dar couldn't attend film as she had to help set-up for event, silent auction, etc. It was extremely well-attended, (all 125 tickets, maximum capacity of venue, Barking Parrot, were sold), and we sat next to good friends so it was fun to catch-up. One of the people in Lady Dar's walking group, Sandy, was actually on a boat/biking vacation in Croatia, around the time we were there and walked the wall in Dubrovnik about two days after we did. Flamin' has been in Penticton, on grandparent duty, since Osoyoos weekend, and she was over for dinner on Tuesday evening and came to last night's event as well. Sarge, Kid Chelene and Prince Valiant, [their two sons, former RCMP officer here, latter mining engineer in Kamloops], both award winning figure-skaters, themselves, now judges], are involved with the 2019Skate Canada International in Kelowna this weekend, so Sarge will collect her on his way up from Vancouver.

For our part, we are off to The Dream to hear Sweet Alibi this evening and then it's the last Farmers' Market on Saturday. After that we will go over to Chloë's place to help her hang pictures and move a few bits of furniture. [At noon today we are meeting the contractor, Mike, who did our kitchen, at her place as Lady Dar has asked him to provide a quotation on putting in suite in the basement. Since it is already wired and plumbed we are hoping that the cost will be "manageable" but we will see what we shall see!] I'm selling 50/50 ticket at the Dream on Saturday and then it will be home to pack as we are off to Vancouver on Sunday morning, [stopping at Sunshine Valley to see friends who have a lovely cabin there], returning on Thursday. Lady Dar has her book club on Monday evening and I've arranged to host two tables of bridge that night. We are staying on Bayswater and 7th, at Elaine Keating's place. She is in Japan visiting relatives and wanted us to stay to have someone in house for part of the time she is away. I have an annual check-up with my dermatologist on Wednesday and then we will drive back on Thursday, in time to host bridge that night, Halloween, the 48th anniversary of meeting in Winnipeg, at Champ's Motor Inn pub!

Must away as I want to do at least one set of shoulder exercises, [rest upon return], before we leave to meet Mike. Enjoy your time in Boston and New York. Sorry we will miss you in Vancouver. ["Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?" Thanks, Carole!] Fondestos from Lady Dar, playing soccer with Duke, to you both. Stay well. Travel safely. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Monday Bidders! Game and pot-luck are on. Fast Eddy has offered to bring a dessert but that is only menu item so far. One table to date, [The Penguin, Ragin' Bull, Fast Eddy and Il Conduttore], but yet to hear from Giorgio, O Susannah and Pedro. The Snozz is otherwise engaged, probably practicing his Mandarin. Have sent messages to Polly and Mick but no reply so far. Also message to Liz and Doug, neighbours of Elaine, so am fairly confident we'll manage two tables. Sarge will play if needed. I suggest anytime after 5:00 pm and we can visit until enough for play. I'll confirm numbers by Sunday evening, at latest. Keep the menu items coming! Stay well. Look forward to Bridge Reunion, Fall, 2019! Cheers, Patrizzio! Pic: Spiller Road Folk, (Gilliana and Phillipo), my firewood connezzione after and afternoon of bridge this past Tuesday. Duke, waiting for Lady Dar to bid!

Pat, thanks for the invitation but I have a previous engagement plus I have not played bridge for several years. All the best, Peter Hi Peter! Sorry you can't make it. When you can, don't worry about not having played in awhile as we just have fun and I'm sure bidding will come back quickly. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio! Bridge, Monday evening, October 28th! Hello Liz and Doug! Would be wonderful to see you both, so please let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly. Thanks. Fondestos from Lady Dar, readying herself for this evening. [We are off to The Dream Café to hear Sweet Alibi], to you both. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Sorry for tardy reply, but busy day! Walked to see my young heroine Greta Thunberg this morning then had gang round for pre Halloween party, see below.......We are in for bridge Monday evening , let us know how many will be present , we could provide chicken casserole. Trick or treat Mick

Hello Kitsilano, and environs, Bidders! Penticton People are pleased to announce that there will be two tables of bridge, [7 as of this writing, (although I still have a few Aces up my sleeve for another player), so Dummy will move], on Monday night. Heard back from Clan Carter and both Polly and Mick are able to play. They will bring a chicken casserole so the main course is set. Still looking for appetizers, a vegetable or rice or potatoe dish and a salad. As mentioned earlier, Fast Eddy will bring dessert. Those not having suggested a menu item, please let me know what you might wish to contribute so that I can print the Michelin 5 Star menus!

I had forgotten that Liz and Doug are traveling, in Japan, with Elaine and, by all accounts, having a wonderful time. Although we will miss the three of them, [and their keenly honed bidding skills], it means that we will be able to depredate their wine cellars! Thanks overseas travelers! Again, doors will be open at 5:00 pm on Monday so please come when work, grandchildren, dogs, home arrest conditions, garden clean-up, vacuuming, etc., allow, and we can visit before play begins. Wonderful that so many of our Lower Mainlander friends are free for this gathering and we look forward to seeing everyone. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Liz and Doug! Hey Patrick We would have loved to play bridge with you (and flattered that you asked us despite our terrible bridge skills). However, we are actually in Japan with Elaine. We’ve just finished the 5 day Komano Kodo so we have thighs of steel and enlightened minds! Hope to visit next time you visit our fair city X Liz and Doug I”ll bring some sushi. Janet

I was just in Montreal. My nephew Noah Soroka the cabinet maker https://www.noahsoroka.com/ shares space in an old industrial building with this fellow, Benoit Daigle. https://www.instagram.com/benoitdaiglepotier/?igshid=1jdrx35xxbtku I met the guy and he sells these urns to Quebec wineries. They report the earthenware containers leach acidity from their wines-increasingly popular in Quebec. I'd like to help him start some interest in his urns in the Okanagan. Could you inquire whether anyone is interested, please.
I reckon he could make and ship some smaller ones as a trial. Al

Hi Big Al! Trust you are well. We just returned from a marvellous six week holiday in Europe, (Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and France), and are now busy readying ourselves for the birth of Chloë's child. She is scheduled to be induced, due to her age, etc., on November 23rd. Exciting time for her and rest of family.

Enjoyed the links to both your nephew's site as well as to Benoit's. My suggestion is that he send out inquiries to the hundreds of wineries he will find listed on such sites as one below. He is far better able to make his case than anyone else.

Trust this helps. Must away as we are off to meet a contractor, Mike, [He did our kitchen last year.], at her place as Lady Dar has asked him to provide a quotation on putting a one bedroom suite in the basement. Since it is already wired and plumbed we are hoping that the cost will be "manageable" but we will see what we shall see! Chloë will certainly need the "mortgage helper". Fondestos from Lady Dar to you and Cheryl. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Obsessive Compulsive Cleaner! Great to hear from you and see your handsome pooch! [Please remind me of his name: Cyrus? Marcus? Titus Andronicus?] Just remembered, Silas!!! Trust you are well. Funnily enough I was just thinking about you and wondering if you had dissolved in a batch of bleach! Glad to learn you are alive and well and hitting The Dream. Hope you enjoyed the gig last night. Last Farmers' Market is on tomorrow! See you there! Fondestos from Lady Dar to you as she's looking forward to meeting you. If not at Saturday's market, give us a shout/message and come by for a drink when convenient. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pic: Duke and Etta send regards to Silas!
