Frisky Felines On a Sunny, Sunny Day Bygone Blues: Tuesday, April 30th!

Spend the afternoon. You can't take it with you. -Annie Dillard, author (b. 30 Apr 1945)

Good morning Pat, and Corrine, Just wanted to let you both know that your Net Metering Application was approved. We are thinking 3rd or 4th week of May for your install. Thank you for your patience. I will follow up with a weeks notice if that’s ok with you. Have a wonderful day! Southside Jonny

Hi Southside! Thanks for the update. Wonderful news. Be great if work could start in third week of May as Lady Darjeeling has me hooked up to the stationary bike to re-charge Kona. I'm starting to feel like a gerbil! Fortunately she lets me drink malt to keep me hydrated! We'll be home, me at least, chained to the bike. Thanks and Cheers, Hamster Man Patrizzio!

Yes, I'm available on Friday evening! If there is only one table, then I'm happy to host as well. Janet Friday is only night that would work for bridge. We won't be back until 9 or 10 on Saturday night. Corinne

Hello Vancouverites and Salish Sea Folk! Trust everyone is well. I'm trying to stitch together a bridge game for Friday evening so am hoping there will be enough for two tables, even if The Galiano Gadabout and Calamity are not available. Nevertheless, this will work if four, [Dummy to move if only seven], of Elaine, Sarge, Ragin', Fast Eddy, O Susannah, The Snooz, Polly and Mick of Famiglia "Golf Cart" Carter, late of Palm Desert, can make it. If there are players enough for two tables, I am going to be pushier than normal and ask if we could implore either Elaine, Sarge or Green Carters to host. If only one table, The Penguin has kindly offered to entertain, and lavishly so! Let me know what you think and I'll plan accordingly. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Last night, Greetings from the Penticton/Summerland High Stakes Bridge Club! Patrizzio, I am up for bridge anytime, anywhere, as long as I get a partner who bids properly. On the other note, just to be clear and honest, I like to drive. I don’t go nuts, at least not that often (anymore), and I am not dilutional, I know I am not a nascar driver, but fr me, it’s fun.
cheers // bjp Branko Hi Ragin'! Consider yourself booked for Friday night, come Hell or High Water, since we now have four confirmed, as of this writing. Snoozola 'ain't available and have not yet heard from rest. You may well not be "dilutional" or delusional but your tippling seems to have "diluted" your grey matter! I'll be in touch about location once I know more. Stay well. Cheers, Il Conduttore! Pics: Do Not Dilute!
Patrizzio, I just checked my calendar, and I can’t believe it, but I am booked for Friday. This happens to me all too often. I spend eons of time lamenting in loneliness, then get multiple invitations for the same day. Life is not fair ...Sorry, but if you can spring yourself for a coffee, pleas drop by, I’ll start up the fossil fuel guzzling espresso machine. Branko I will be in Kamloops.  You can host it at my place if you want. Sarge. Hi Sarge! Thanks for the offer. As of this writing I don't know how many will be playing but I might well take you up. Will let you know, of course. Thanks again. Travel safely. Cheers, Patrizzio! We just saw your email re bridge are busy this Friday and also Sunday lunch. If you have any spare time come by for a coffee or drink. Otherwise we are up in naramata on June 16. Pauline Hello Clan Carter! Look like this weekend won't work out but look forward to connecting in June. Organize your trip so that you can stay with us for a few days before and/or after Sandy Beach Lodge. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Playing Hard to Get Бранимир! Too, too bad. Your erratic bidding and inevitable whining will be sorely missed! Given my schedule, on Friday afternoon, I think I should be able to pop by for some fossil-fueled fuel! I'll give you a shout, once in town, [Chloë plans to leave Penticton at 8:00 am so we should be in Vancouver around 1:00 pm, perhaps earlier, depending on road conditions, traffic, etc.], and see what might work for both of us. She will be dropping me off. Location not yet decided as I'm waiting to hear from friend, [Tom Shorthouse, former UBC Library colleague.], I would like to meet before hooking up with you and your machina! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pat, Not available Friday night, enjoy our smoke free environment here in Vancouver. Hope you are doing well. John Snooz没有桥! Snooz méiyǒu qiáo!/No Bridge for The Snooz!

In case you are rusty! Hi Snoozola! Sorry we'll miss you. Yes, I'm doing very well indeed, considering I underwent complete right shoulder replacement surgery on March 12th. Saw my specialist, this past Thursday, [six weeks, post-op], afternoon at the Cast Clinic at Penticton Regional Hospital and he signed off on physiotherapy rehab so hope I'll be back cycling and hiking soon. No longer need to wear the sling that has been my albatross for last six weeks! Hip Hip Hooray! [Drove for the first time after appointment and everything felt fine!] Unfortunately, no appointments, at Physio Dept at PRH, until May 7th, so I have contacted his office and he will sign a request form for similar treatment at the Community Centre, REACT program, I used with my second hip replacement. Like the hot tub and steam room there and plan to continue deep-water walking once I'm cleared for such exercise as a certain amount of stress on one's shoulders when one pulls oneself through the water, even though supported by a flotation belt. Stay well. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Tummler, Love to join you but we will be on the North Island. G’us a heads up when next you are swanning around the lower mainland. Fond regards to all, W&CJ Hello No No-Trumpers! Sorry we'll miss you, it goes without saying. On a positive not had a message from Argon Solar. Our Net Metering Application was approved and installation work will start 3rd or 4th week of May. Must away as my yogurt with dehydrated apple rings and cherries await! Cheers from the Tumbling Tummler! Hi All, I am available Friday evening and can host as well  if we have one table (at West Blvd & 41st with a killer view). Cheers, Susan P.

Hi Chris! Trust you are well. Sorry for taking so long to reply to your letter. I quite enjoyed the article you sent along. Thanks very much. Give us a shout if you will be up as we'd love to see you here in Penticton. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio!! Pics: Kona, cats and garlic! What? No pics of single malts nor vino tinto? The real pat dunn would have led with strength……….Glad all is well. Q: what was the all in price of your ‘elon light’? Chris Hi again, Christopheros! List price for Kona was $55,000. I wanted model below, $45,000, [Basically the same but no bells and whistles, such as they were. Who needs leather seats or seats, at all, for that matter!], but dealership did not have any and was not expecting delivery in who knows when. With our 2013 Equinox, trade-in and Lady Dar's 2003 Bug, [Scrap-It program], we ended up paying around $37,000, with sundry taxes, etc. 16 solar panels, with Tier 2 charger to come.

No time to drink as I must away to ride stationary bike! Cheers, Patrizzio, But a Shade of the Real Pat Dunn! Pics: Me, myself, malt cabinet, [corner just in background] and I; vino fridge, top for half for whites, bottom for tinto, with differential temperature control! Malt storage. Combo locks on both while Lady Dar is away! Atta boy…………..that’s the pat we have come to know and love xoxo Chris Join us in celebrating Mother's Day with the release of our 2018 Rosé! #RoséAllDay Township 7: Start here? Sure. I’ll be your DD. Night ❤️ Hi Sleepy Head! Just back from quite an evening. Started out at the PAG AGM, where, in the front row of seats, sat beside Norberto, a lovely man we met at the last exhibition we were at. Business meeting was over in a little less than an hour and then there was a very pleasant reception for attendees.

First talked with the owner of the BookShop who had received a Lifetime Honourary Membership. During presentation, by Paul Crawford, Curator, of a lovely print, as a thank you, + lifetime membership, I learned that Bruce Stevenson taught at Lord Byng but left in 1972 so no cross-over, unfortunately. I did my first practicum in the school library there, [Liz Austrum was in charge], in the Spring of 1975. Next I chatted with Barb Dawson, Board Member, [Interesting woman who worked in SF for five years in animation. Her husband is an animator and they just moved to Penticton, from Vancouver, two years ago. [They live on Eastside Road, just south of Skaha Lake Marina and paid a cool million for their house!], and suggested PAG approach City to have the large electrical boxes, on the large expanse of grass in front of the Gallery, covered with some of the images, or others, used on various receptacles, along Main street. [I think they could use images taken from works in permanent collection.] She was very receptive to idea.

Next I bumped into Antonella de Michelis, a lovely young woman who teaches an art appreciation course, (Italian works), at the Gallery, as well as holding faculty positions at UBC Okanagan and at U Cal, based out of El Cerrito, near Berkeley, for a university in Rome. She leads PAG sponsored trips to Italy every year and we'd love to go so please start a crowd-funding page on Facebook, as prices are pricey! At a certain point, Barb joined us and I suggested that the Board should approach the City and suggest that developers should be required to fund public art as part of any new building permits granted to them.

[Thank you for the lovely photos. It was great to meet you and I hope to meet your wife one day too. Barb. Hi Barb! Glad you enjoyed snaps. We will be away in Vancouver over this coming weekend but I'll give you a shout when we are back and perhaps you and your husband can pop by for a drink and a visit. Cheers, Patrizzio!] Since PAG is in desperate need of climate controlled storage space for its permanent collection I suggested that a given developer could satisfy this requirement by figuring in a certain amount of  appropriate storage space in a given development. If a series of these facilities were constructed across Penticton it would allow the collection to be dispersed and hence, protected, inasmuch as only a portion of the entire collection would be destroyed if fire or flood, or other catastrophe, reared its ugly head. Now, if PAG was consumed by fire, it would be most likely that the entire permanent collection would be lost.

Current storage is grossly overcrowded and hence, works are not easily accessible nor stored under ideal temperature conditions. Both Antonella and Barb were quite taken with the suggestion and it seems I'm running for Mayor next election! Still, since PAG is currently negotiating with City to take over maintenance of their physical plant maintenance, etc., it would seem an opportune time to plant this seed in the Council's mind as a way to leverage developers into contributing to the ongoing cultural life of the city.

Bade goodnight to those I'd met and strolled to Cannery Brewery as I knew Clan Sutherland was gathering there. I'd popped in on way to PAG but it was around 5:45 pm and Flamin' said they would be there at 6:00 pm so no sign of anyone. Same held true when I walked inside, around 8:15 pm but I stopped, briefly, to chat with James Miller, former editor of Penticton Herald, about local politics, [future of Shatford Centre, etc.], and was just about to leave and make for home when Flamin' came up behind me. I had looked everywhere, earlier, when I first arrived but had not seen them. Anyway, the other couple they were with left so we sat down for a beer apiece and had a grand visit. I wanted them to come inside for a nightcap but no stamina, given shifts for Beckster and Kid next day and grand-parenting for Flamin'.
I was welcomed by both Etta and Duke but they wouldn't come inside so I brushed and flossed and then started on my last round of arm/shoulder exercises. Once I've finished them and sent this message, I'll hit the hay myself as I've invited Flamin' for dinner tomorrow and I needs must be up reasonably early to ready the house for grand visitors.

Already made a coleslaw salad, before I started this message, and have had chicken marinating since this morning, so food preparation is well in hand. Fondestos, Love and Cheers, Dad/Patrizzio! Pics: PAG and Cannery!

Hi Clan Sutherland! Thanks for the IPA, Flamin' and ride home Kid. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Old Farts Hike Thursday MAY 2: Still no sign of Jim so that gives me the chance to show you one of my favorite places at this time of year. I would like to make the annual pilgramage to Roddy Flat and beyond  to view the spectacular display of balsam root flowers which should be in their prime this week. Last year's display was phenomenal. So Penticton and south meet at the Home Hardware parking lot at 8:40 for carpooling to Summerland. Summerlanders meet at the IGA to await the arrival of the southern contingent before departing to our destination at 9:00. Hope to see you there, Peter

Begin the Bedding Plants' Frost Free Blues: Monday, April 29th!

This world is divided roughly into three kinds of nations: those that spend lots of money to keep their weight down; those whose people eat to live; and those whose people don't know where their next meal is coming from. -David S. Landes, author, professor of economics and history (29 Apr 1924-2013)

Balsam-ic and 3rd to Burns Bog, over! Tummler, g'us an update on the one-armed paper hanger and his recovery. And on your travel plans to the Island Republic. We have been in the city for a Celebration of Life for the last of my mother's siblings. You would have enjoyed it and likely would have known many of the attendees. Could you ask Peter if he has a realtor he would recommend in Victoria. Jane has to sell her parents house there and is looking for someone. Fond regards to all, W, CJ y Morita

Penticton Calling! Penticton Calling! Come in, Salish Sea! Come in Salish Sea! Can you hear me? [I had to use Google Translate for most of your message. I fear you are devolving into impenetrable, unintelligible Island-speak and I assume the rest of your always erratic behaviour is tending, alarmingly quickly, towards the über barbaric as well!] If so, pleased to report that I am have shrugged off the slings and arrows of outrageous sling-shot binding, as of last Thursday, and am marching, at full speed, damn the torpedoes, towards vigorous physical rehab.  On Friday I will drive into Vancouver with Chloë as we will be attending a close friend's 65th surprise birthday party in Gibsons on Saturday. Just a whirlwind tour as we won't even stay overnight in Gibsons and will drive back to Penticton on Sunday. Unfortunately, and our hearts bleed, profusely so, no time for Salish Sea Salts! However, we will be staying with Elaine on both Friday and Saturday nights so if you will be in town again, let's get together for a drink, at very least, perhaps bridge and a meal, if that is in the cards, so to speak! Let me know and we'll plan accordingly.

I just talked to Lynne, [Peter is in DRC filling his deep pockets with rare metals used in cell phones!], and they bought their condo off the plan so no realtor was involved and she doesn't know anyone else in city. You might send a message to our very close friend, Carol Riera, now in Qualicum Beach, who joined her sister there in her real-estate business. [I coined Chooch's slogan, Rely on Riera, so she owes me plenty! She, or her sister, might well be able to recommend someone so it might be worth a try. Just remember I get part of the commission from Calamity, after all the dust settles! Pleased the Celebration of Life went well. How goes your relationship with The Evil Sister?

Must away as want to complete first set, (of three), of my arm/shoulder exercises. Would like to do something more taxing but don't want to try anything until physio assesses me. As well, need to walk to grocery store for a few supplies. [Down to one car now.] Ordinarily, I'd be more than happy to ride, of course, panniers at the ready, but can't afford to risk putting undue strain on shoulder until I've had the chance to strengthen muscles, etc. Will finish off with riding the stationary. Am up to 2.5 hours now and time just flies by, watching Netflix, mainly. Currently on Season Three of Fargo. While not done by Coen Brothers, producers/directors have done what I think is a superb job of keeping to original spirit/flavour of film so it is more than a delight to watch all the criminals, many extremely nasty, most bumbling half-wits, [hilariously depicted], encounter quiet, unpretentious law enforcement officers, (often women), much, much brighter and observant than their adversaries can ever, in their hubris, imagine. Fondestos to you both. Stay well. Cheers, form the Three Faces of Burns Street: Tummler/Il Conduttore/Patrizzio!

Bangladesh: Some conference pics. All from closing ceremony cultural events. Come in, Hong Kong! Come in Hong Kong! Great snaps from closing ceremony! Thanks. How long are you in Hong Kong? Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Come in, Geyserville! Come in Geyserville! Can you hear me? Trust you are both well. I just completed my Futures selection. Not sure if you have my up-dated Visa card on file so I entered it, just to be sure. When you have a minute let me know if order went through. Thanks. Saved selections: 3 Block 4 Futures - 2019 / 10 months; 3 Block 6 Zin Futures; (Formerly RaiZin) - 2019 / 10 months; 3 Terre Melange Futures - 2019 / 10 months; 3 Zinfandel Futures - 2019 / 10 months; 3 Italiano Style Futures - 2019 / 16 months; 6 Lagrein Futures - 2019 / 16 months; 3 The Ultimate Cuvee Futures - 2019 / 16 months. Fondestos to you both. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio! Gee, you could have bought a Tesla Model 3 for that price, much faster, but I know you do not drive much, just bike........sorry to hear about your shoulder........Dave Hi Pizza King!
No Tesla dealerships in town. My shoulder is well on the mend, thanks. How about your knee! Or was it a hip? Pics: Desperately seeking a Coffaro! Had to drown my sorrows in malt!

Patrizzio & fiends, Sure glad they have a free charging station in Manning Park. Hmmm, do they also have a free gas station? I would be even more impressed if there was cell phone coverage along (all) the #3. I’ve always wondered what one would do in case of break-down or injury during a low traffic period. It’s a safety thing, but I guess free fill-ups for electric cars are more politically important. Well, my jury is still out on electric cars. There are a lot of questions that I have not heard he answers to … so I am not giving up my bmw yet. I'm pretty sure it’s more fun to drive than a Kona-mobile! Branko

Hi Luddenko, et al! You, of all people, Ragin', so enamoured of technology, I would have thought you would have embraced, whole-heartedly, electric vehicles! Anyway, Dear Dinosaurus, I guess ossification has proceeded too, too far for you to be flexible enough to take one small step to help stave off global warming. Don't worry, however, as I'm sure you can convert your cherished BMW into an amphibious craft before the ocean inundates most of Kitsilano. Too bad you didn't keep your Dad's Albatross Ark! At any rate, let me know if you are available for a drive by or more. Cheers, Patrizzio, Spitting on Skyrocketing Gas Prices! PS: Imagine, one can slip Kona into Sport Mode, with the touch of a finger, and then we'll see which car handles better! Let's have a drag race on Broadway at 3:00 am!

Well Patrizzio, Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! I am not the kettle. It is because of my interest in technology that I still have a lot of unanswered questions about electric cars. And yes, I do believe in global warming, I will never get into Trump’s cabinet.

When it comes to energy, there is no free lunch. Electricity has to be produced and is difficult to store. I agree there are worst (coal powered generator in your back yard) and less hazards ways. But let’s look at the whole picture. A car has to be built. Eventually, and far too often given how any people keep buying new cars, it has to be disposed of. In the case of electric, we got making and disposing of batteries. So when you look at the environmental impact of the life cycle of a car, how much of a difference does the type of fuel make?

I at least do not buy new cars, and I drive them for as long as they last, or sell them while they are still working. As for simple economics, I have put about $10K into my (now) 25 year old bmw. It is in *perfect* mechanical shape, looks great. Why don’t you look at how much you paid for the electro-mobile, subtract $10K, and see how much $$ I have to spend on gas? Oh, and your welcome to the government subsidy and “free” electricity … tax$@work!

I have no doubt you would beat me in a (very short) drag race - but it wouldn’t be along Broadway, even at 3:00am - you must not know how bad the traffic is in this city. I am technically knowledgeable enough to know electric motors have good low-end torque. My bmw has to hit about 4,000 rpm before the after-burners kick in - doesn’t happen in the city. But why don’t you give Lady Dar a buzz, and see if on her way home, she would please check out the handling at say … 200k on the Coq … uphill? She will definitely have to touch the “sport mode” button.

Not sure what you mean by “drive by”. You planning to be in town soon? Oh, there is one electric car I would consider … check out: <https://www.rimac-automobili.com/en/

So I will soon be looking for a new car and was thinking hybrid. Best of both worlds. I guess it would be Either twice as Bad or half as worse! J Hi Penguin! I suggest you buy a full electric vehicle. I started out with a Ford Escape hybrid but I wouldn't do that now. While it served me extremely well I strongly urge you to go whole hog electric. You won't regret it and you need to save the Antarctic ice for all your relatives, in spite of what the Crazy Croat says! Cheers, Patrizzio! I am pretty certain I would not get an electric vehicle.  I want to travel when I retire (hopefully in a couple years) and I would not want to worry about where the next charging station is.  And if I live where I am now, I don't have any plug ins.  However, I hope my little Rav 4 from 1998 continues to chug along for another couple of years. Janet

Hello again, Rimaco! You sent the Croatian extravagant monstrosity along ages ago. You need to wean yourself of your unhealthy fascination with torque, fantastically expensive torque at that and Batmobile design! At any rate, let's agree to disagree. I'm not about to waste time trying to convince you what your conscience, not your self-destructive stubbornness, should tell you to embrace, not deny á la Donaldo!

Yes, Lady Dar and I will be in Vancouver, on Friday and Saturday evenings, of this coming week. Off to Gibson's on Saturday morning but will be back late that afternoon, staying with Elaine Keating both nights. Do you wish to play bridge, either or both nights. If so, you, et al, let me know and I'll see what I can arrange. Back to Penticton on Sunday morning.

Just back from bridge, this evening, with two tables in Summerland, hosted by Olga Polga. Only seven but worked well with Dummy moving. Cheers, Il Conduttore! Pics: Bridge this evening! Tiptoe through the tulips with me!

Patrick, Now in Delhi. Fascinating place. Sunday we walked from our hotel to a little art gallery that contained a great cafe John knew about. Monday we hired a car and went shopping. Got back to the hotel in time to say goodbye to John. His meeting in Delhi was over and he had to fly back to Bhopal. Not sure what we're doing today. Colin Hello to you from Delhi. The conference we attended 3as on Dhaka Bangladesh. Sorry if I confused you. We did fly through Jong Kong entroute to Dhaka. Our stay in Delhi this far has been great . Cheers for now Hope your shoulder is healing! Lots if hugs Joanne Hello Nouveaux Delhigians! We enjoyed the city very much indeed, in spite of the terrible, terrible air pollution, at the time.

Not sure what the HK fixation is about. We did go there a couple of years ago. Really enjoyed it. Had a bizarre experience at a bazaar today. Carpet salesman strung the longest line of BS we have ever heard. Did you know that the pashmina is an animal like a llama? Special wool for carpet. Last 500 years. Too bad the whole story is fake. Oh well, it made for entertainment. Off to Taj Mahal tomorrow. Taj Mahal and Dehli with the Lighthalls!

Hello Bazaar Goers! We experienced much the same in Turkey and in India as well, although we did buy in both countries, even though I had vowed not to do so! Lady Dar would drink the delicious, complimentary apple tea in Turkey, while I would opt for Turkish coffee or a Coke in India. No fixation about Hong Kong. I only mentioned it as you said you were looking forward to Duty Free there and I thought you might have been staying.

We had a wonderful experience at the Taj Mahal. We were supposed to go early in the morning but as there had been heavy fog for a few days our guide suggested we change our itinerary to visit in the late afternoon. Turned out to be a wonderful choice as sunset was glorious and we were able to sleep-in next morning! See if you can locate the graffiti, [Naramata was here!], Peter carved into one of the inner temple walls! Cheers, Patrizzio!

I did assume, Marps, that you were just passing through Hong Kong. Another fascinating city, at least as far as we were able to discover. Lovely day here, although a few drops of rain early this afternoon. Still quite cool overnight so I've been bringing in our bedding plants, over-protective novice gardener that I am. Put them out in the glorious sun this afternoon. Had a grand time with two tables of bridge this evening, in Summerland. Only seven but worked well with Dummy moving. Enjoy the rest of your stay in Dehli. Travel safely. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Duhlink! Trust all went well with your book club discussion and gathering. Had a quiet day with even lazier felines! Mid-afternoon, walked down to IGA for a few groceries and then rode stationary for an hour. Drove over to Olga's with Ann, driving, and Dianne, who was just as happy to be a passenger as she said it had been a rather trying day with her kitchen renovations. Anyway, loads of fun even if we finished close to 8:30 pm. People must all be related to Gilliana!

At any rate, what am I supposed to ask Atwater? Sorry, I forgot what you had mentioned or outlined. You could phone them if you have a moment. Let me know and I'll act accordingly. Haven't heard from Flamin' so I'll give her a call tomorrow. If she's free I'll invite her for dinner on Wednesday as that is only night that Chloë can come, having meetings, etc. Duke just came in so I have to go and give him a drink and then play with floss! Life without felines, don't you miss it! Love, Your Favourite All Night Radio Man! Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Sleepoids this morning!

Hi Graeme! Thanks very much for the great snapolas! I hope to re-join gang as soon as I'm cleared by my physio and doctor who did right shoulder replacement. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Bridge Movers and Shakers! Thanks so much to Olga Polga for hosting such a lovely evening. Hip Hip Hooray! I was lucky enough to walk away with four pieces of her fab lemon loaf. Unfortunately  it was not a bridge prize! Next week seems to be a very busy one for many. Lady Darjeeling and I can only play on Wednesday, May 8th or Thursday, May 9th. If another day suits most people, that is fine. Anyway, let me know your preferences or availability and I'll do my best to suggest which date works best for most people. Will leave question of who will host until I know who can play when. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Bridge this evening! Tiptoe through the tulips with me!

Thanks Patrizzio. I enjoyed last night as well. I fly to Edmonton Thursday coming back on the 22nd. Monday or Tuesday afternoon or evening would work best for me that way maybe Gill and Phil could play. Hugs to all, Olly Visiting the Leprachauns .... will return May 12th, 2019. I will be checking my e-mail each evening. Dame Judith From all the happy smiles looks like a great time was had by all!!! I still have spring fever so am skipping bridge for awhile Judy xox Thanks Patrick.. I can only play next Wednesday. Dianne I can do Wednesday May 8 Susan Thanks for thinking about a possible pm but we can't do either Mon or tues next week pm or evening. Have fun Gill Hello Spiller Road Folk! So far, we have most people wishing to play on Wednesday, May 8th. Are you interested? We will host and can start earlier if that would work for you. Let me know and I'll plan accordingly. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio! Sorry Patrick, next week is a no go for us both. see you soon Gill

Hi Luigi and Cousin! Graeme forwarded me a couple of snapolas. Looked like a wonderful outing. I hope to re-join gang as soon as I'm cleared by my physio and doctor who did right shoulder replacement. No sling now so feel free as a bird! Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio! Oops It’s Tim Dunn in the picture. Now I recall. I think  we met on the lunar eclipse snowshoe back in February and you spoke about your passion for squash. I wish you a speedy recovery with your shoulder. Graeme Hi again, Graeme! Yes, I do recall chatting with you about squash but I think you meant Marian, not Tim, in snaps. Thanks for good wishes for my shoulder. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Lady Dar Sings the St Christopher Crowsnest Blues: April 28th!

Let us face a pluralistic world in which there are no universal churches, no single remedy for all diseases, no one way to teach or write or sing, no magic diet, no world poets, and no chosen races, but only the wretched and wonderfully diversified human race. -Jacques Barzun, professor and writer (1907- )

Hi Sounds like you are well on the way in your recuperation from surgery. Sorry to hear that there are health concerns in your inner circle though. Good for you two in getting ahead of the game in buying an electric car. I decided to sell my Beetle while there was still a market for it but may have to wait a few years to buy either hybrid or electric. Is there an online info as to the location of charging stations. What range does the Kona have? Love to hear more as time goes by. The solar panels are a great idea. I keep wishing the complex here would consider the possibility but evidently that idea does not muster much interest.

We are still on a babysitting schedule but unfortunately with Kian’s formal schooling starting this fall our time will be cut short. It has been such fun! Imagine you being a great grandparents! Such a cutie too! Without a second car, I am beginning to feel like a recluse. Time to start looking into bus schedules. Your life Is just as full as ever! Good to hear from you 💗 Brenda Greetings to all Hi Brenda Louise! Wonderful to know Kian is already enrolled in the heavy equipment program at TRU! Coincidentally, Lady Dar used her 2003 Bug as part of the Scrap-It program when we bought our Kona, along with our 2013 Equinox, as a trade-in. We decided to buy the electric vehicle, in part, because the Hyundai dealership offered us about $1000 more than did the GM dealership when we looked at the 2018 Bolt before Christmas. The longer we kept the Equinox the more it would depreciate, of course. As well, the Bolt is much smaller than the Kona and we wanted something with a little more room.

Funnily enough, we decided to move on the solar panel front as Argon Solar, out of Oliver, had approached Chloë, last Fall, in her capacity as a strata manager at Pacific Quorum, to see if any of the buildings she had in her portfolio might be interested in installing solar panels. They gave a presentation and she forwarded some of the information to us as she knew we were toying with the idea. Had been for a number of years. A few months ago, now, one of the reps came over and to look at our property and then gave us a detailed estimate. Once we realized we could afford it, [O Woe is my tax-free account but what is this money for anyway?], we moved on the electric vehicle front.

Speaking of which, the "747 dashboard screen" has many features, as you can imagine, one of which maps charging stations, giving type and distance from one's present location, etc. Furthermore, we signed up for ChargePoint, (free), which provides both a card one uses at charging stations to release plug as well as an app for one's iPhone to find available stations, check charging status and view charging history, etc. I gather you can also reserve a charging session but we haven't had to do that at this point. Probably something for longer trips such as driving to LA to see Olivia! For now, Lady Dar will need to be concerned about how to charge Kona in Vancouver, not so much at public charging stations but at residential homes which may well not have a regular outlet near a parking spot that might necessitate running an extension cord across a city sidewalk.

Anyway, an interesting learning experience. Really have to re-think one's attitude of, heretofore, simply travelling from one gas station to another and a relatively quick fill-up and go, within minutes. Now, a quick charge, if available, [Another wrinkle is that many of the existing stations are for Teslas only and plugs are not compatible for other electric vehicle.], is about an hour, perhaps more, I believe, so need to have a good book at the ready all the time. Perhaps, a more relaxed way to travel, particularly if one has the luxury of time. Simply have to become far more disciplined when planning and undertaking a highway trip until we have a better idea of the reality of how vehicle behaves between readily available charging stations, given where we now live. Cross your fingers for Lady Dar on this, the maiden voyage of the good ship Kona!

Speaking of things electric, perhaps you should think about an ebike since you are down to one car. This would allow you to negotiate the considerable hill you live atop and free you from your hermit's cave! Must away to do my first set of arm/shoulder exercises for the day. Will do a few light chores around the house once I've waved goodbye to Lady Dar and then must ready things for tonight's meal. Chloë will come for dinner this evening and we'll watch latest episode of Game of Thrones while we eat. Fondestos from Lady Dar, to you and Sir Walter, busy packing her bag. Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Patrizzio, post-barbershop! Took these "selfie" snaps, [With my regular camera as I'm not really a regular iPhone addict, although need to become much more acquainted with it now Kona is part of our lives.], as friend, David, in Berkeley, wanted to see me shorn!

Great to hear about the relatively pain free mending of the shoulder!. Not so great to hear re the unavailability of bike racks for your car and the misleading info presented when you purchased it ☹.

Perhaps we could build a combination bike / wood carrier for yourself and concoct a more commercially viable unit for mainstream market. I agree that this is well suited to the emerging green minded populace and should be seriously looked at. The attached picture is an idea in progress. Perhaps you could take a few detailed pics’ of the back of the car including the underside area if possible and I can think more about what we could do.

Heading out for my first golf game in a year and a half this morning so looking forward to that , especially with the weather cooperating so nicely. Going with our friend Amar who is the father of one of Jesse’s school mates from Elementary school so we go quite a ways back now, also Colleen’s brother Sean and Mike Carrol an old friend of mine who I rarely get to see but we keep in touch. Mike is a former contract trucker turned wholesale coffee distributor who lives in Burkeville with his wife. Turns out that Mike and Amar know eachother from work as Amar is also a truck driver and they happened to get to know eachother over the years and not making the connection to me until many years later!. Mike is a surprise guest at todays game so I am sure they will both be quite happy to see each other and catch up.

Colleen and I are heading to New York at the end of the week so it will be busy catching up on various stuff. Really looking forward to that. Jake’s girlfriend's Mom is going to pick us up on Monday and take us around for the day to a bunch of major attractions including the Freedom Tower, Wall Street and the Brooklynn Bridge, among others. I must go and dust off the golf gear but will catch up soon, hugs to you both and have a great day. Cheers, Al                                                                      Hello Big Apple People! Wonderful to know that you continue to live The Lives of the Rich and Famous! What a wonderful trip! Bravo! I was first in NY when I was about five and we docked there, having crossed the Atlantic, leaving from Southhampton. I remember going to Radio City Music Hall to see Seven Brides for Seven Sons and watching TV, for the first time, in our hotel room.

When we left, at the end of our long, three month holiday in Canada, (by train to Winnipeg, via Buffalo and the Niagara Falls), I still have vivid, vivid memories of seeing the Statue of Liberty as the ocean liner, the Exeter, sailed past her, eventually making for Gibraltar and the Mediterranean. I remember I was standing, by myself, in the late afternoon, the sun setting, on the upper deck of the stern, imagining she was waving goodbye, just to me! Next time was in 1957 when we left Cyprus, aboard the Independence, from Liverpool, for the last time, and we docked in NY. Fireboats shooting fountains of water into the air and confetti falling like snow to welcome us. Magical indeed, at least for me as a nine-year old.

Thanks for great drawing of Road Runner's prototype of a bike rack! I have attached a snaps of underside, (rotated, after the fact), and back of Kona. From what I could discern there doesn't seem much to attach a hitch frame to, given battery housing, etc. I suspect underside would need a much closer inspection, while on a hoist, or some such elevatory device/mechanism. Until my former, "regular" rack is installed, if ever possible, I'm hoping I can transport bike inside. Not ideal, of course. I'd rather that than a detachable clip-on, with straps, etc., or a roof rack, but may have to live with one or the other.

Enjoy your golf with good friends. Great surprise indeed! Fondestos from Lady Dar, to you, Cartoon Chap, and Marilyn, busy packing her bag, as you both will soon be doing! Stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Kona. Etta helping Lady Dar pack, yesterday, and then, exhausted, napping with her brother and her mistress.

Hi everyone, I’ll see you tomorrow night. Craig not be with us as he’s on the island but we should have enough for two tables, right? Hugs, Olly Hi Patrick...I am happy to let Theresa drive...but we can decide Monday night. Thanks. Diannesee you at 6:05 pmOk...sounds good I can flip the 3rd row of seats up in our Highlander. ...BUT Not too comfortable for
adults to crawl into the back. Especially gimpy ones like you and I 😉. If there is a nimble short legged player who doesnt mind the back row???? I will plan to drive one way or the other, as long as someone comes with me who knows the way. AEB Hello Dummy Moves People! Yes, we enough for two tables but Dummy must move! With respect to carpooling, Ann has enough room for everyone, if one of us is nimble enough to clamber into the back set of seats. If everyone plans to arrive at 611 Burns by 6:05 pm we can see which vehicle woks best for all concerned and take things from there, the Summerlanders warming up the cards for us! Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio! Hello, Theresa and I will go together straight up to Ollie’s. See you there Susan Sorry Patrick, I was not part of that decision….Theresa Hi Theresa! That's fine. We'll see you at Ollie's place. Thanks, Patrizzio!
Hello Penticton Carpoolers! Apparently Susan and Theresa will go directly to Olga Polga's so I'll let you two fight it out over who will drive to Summerland. In any event, I'll see chauffeur and passenger at 611 Burns at 6:05 pm! Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!
See you then AEB

Lady Dar took the Good Ship Kona on its maiden highway voyage yesterday, leaving around 10:30 am. Almost a strategic military planning situation in terms of making sure she knows where she can re-charge, given vehicle's range over mountain terrain, etc. She called just before 2:00 pm to say she was in Manning Park, at a BC Hydro free charging station, all having gone exceedingly well to that point. Our ChargePoint card does not work on this system so she had to call number provided on outlet and was immediately signed up. Neither of us were aware that this system was in place so an on-going learning experience. She was huddled in her car, for forty minutes or so, snow covering the ground, until her "tank" was charged to 80%!

This allowed her plenty of juice to make it to East Van where she had arranged to stay with Robyn for two nights. She arrived around 6:00 pm as she ran into stop-and-go traffic around Abbotsford, due to Tulip Festival crowds! Anyway, she has now scoped out Hope-Princeton so pleased that this route works so well in terms of battery charge/distance with enough redundancy, it would seem, for unexpected situations, traffic, road work or weather conditions, per esempio. Will probably explore Connector/Coquihalla on one of next trips as there is a charging station in Merritt and we need to see what this is like, access etc. Batteries re-charge on descent, no matter grade, [actually a form of very efficient braking as well], so while more energy is expended on climbs than flat terrain, -/+ probably balance each other, to a large extent, maintaining charge needed/expected for planned trip.

Her book club is on Monday evening and she is hosting, at Robyn's. [Muled a case of wine, (!), plus Clan Sutherland's case, latest release from Black Widow we collected on Saturday.]
