Playa Chiquita Beach Blues: Friday, January 12th!

To be nobody but myself -- in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else -- means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting. -E.E. Cummings, poet (1894-1962)

Did he help dig you out? May rent a place in Mexico next winter so you can bask in the sun Love Mom All he does is murmle and dash around!!! Yes please I need some warmth!!!

Hi Murmleator, Miss Etta Mae and Snow-Shovel Goil, et al! Lazy sleep-in until 8:00 am this morning and then after showers we went to the patio breakfast area, off Reception, to enjoy a tasty breakfast. Started with a wonderful ommelletto, almost as good as Ragin's, enhanced with a dollop of Lizano Chilero, a brand of sauce piquante I'd not yet encountered. Might start brushing my teeth with it! Our plan for the day is to take a local bus south to explore part of the Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre GANDOCA-MANZANILLO and then stop at Playa Chiquita, (Priscilla's favourite beach), on way back. Must away otherwise Lady Dar will spend the entire day in the hammock! Love and Cheers, Dad/Patrizzio! Pics: Soda last night and cat at breakfast this morning.

Buon Giorno Famiglia! Lovely to mee you last night. Giorgio reminded me of myself at his age when my father used to carry me to the car when we were visiting friends in Cyprus, where we spent the first nine years of my life. Travel safely and we hope our paths will cross again, in the not too, too distant future. Fondestos from Corinne. Cheers, Patrizzio!

By the time we'd finished our leisurely breakfast and I'd done a bit of laundry to hang out, hoping it would dry in this humid climate, even when the sun is shining, it was close to 11:00 am by the time we headed to the bus depot. Scoped out a number of other possible eateries and then bought our tickets for the trip to Manzanillo. Bus didn't leave until 11:45 am so we wandered around a bit before it arrived. Took about 45 minutes to reach Manzanillo, stopping along the way to collect passengers and allow others to disembark. Only time one could see the Caribbean after we left Puerto Viejo was when we passed Playa Chiquita and from the surfers catching the waves this seems to be one of the beaches for this activity. Next beach south is Playa Punta Uva but one cannot see it from the highway.

Once we reached Manzanillo we had to walk a bit before we came to the trail leadng to the park. Lady Dar bought a bottle of water while I had a coconut, top lopped of with a machete and a straw inserted to drink from, from a vendor, just before the small swinging bridge over a small river. Reminded us of the bridge from Guayabitos to La Peñita and Lady Dar was just as unhappy about crossing it, especially since a number of small children were happily bouncing around in the middle of the span! Safely across, we continued on the pleasant, sandy trail, the forest to our left, the sea to our right. About twenty minutes later we came to Punta Mona where there is a sculpted rock formation much like Siwash Rock in Stanley Park. Continued past until we bumped into a Swedish couple coming the other way. They said that they had walked an hour and a half from this point and still had not reached the end of the trail so we decided we'd gone far enough, particularly since the trail was becoming increasingly muddy and crossed by innumerable, slippery tree roots. [A few minutes before Lady Dar caught her foot on a branch and took a tumble. Fortunately, she didn't break or sprain anything although she had a nice mud-pack on the left side of her face! (Took a day or two but she is now sporting a prize-winning bruise on her abdomen!)] Anyway, wanted to have a swim and read our books so we turned around and found a suitable spot, in the shade, to camp out for a bit.

I went in first as we didn't really want to leave our possessions, (camera, watches, etc.), unguarded. water was divine. Waves were not much but I hadn't expected them to be. I bobbed around for a bit and then returned to let Lady Dar cool off. Much refreshed, I dried off in the sun and then sat down to read my book. About an hour later we shook the sand off our feet and made our way back to the bus stop to find that we had an hour to wait for the next bus, at 4:00 pm. Didn't mind, overly much, as we wanted to have a bite to eat and something to drink. Found another Soda and ordered lemonade and paltes of chips. Both were tasty and filled the spot before dinner.

Bus was right on time and we were back in Puerto Viejo by 4:45 pm. Had an even better look at Playa Chiquita on return leg and think we'll probably swim there next. [I've already paid for surging lessons for Lady Dar!] Not sure if it will be tomorrow or Sunday as Lady Dar wants to go to the Farmers' Market tomorrow morning. Back at Coco Loco I had a quick shower and did a few more items of laundry, a shirt and swim trunks, the latter more to rinse off salt. Opened the "questionable" 2016 Trapiche Rosé, 12.5%, and it isn't all that bad, I must admit! Ironic that we obtained a corkscrew with it! Lady Dar insists we have dinner at a high end joint this evening so I need to open another bottle of wine to dull the pain of not returning to Soda Shekiña where we can bring our own hootch, and no corkage!!! Even in Paradise, there are flies in the ointment, Dear Reader!
