Patrizzio, As you know, the fully restored antique cabinet is in my living room, but I have been at some odds trying to figure out just what to put in it. Then it came to me! Designated use of new Cabinet! Chateau d’Kits! Branko
Everything always seems to happen at once as we are off to Vancouver this morning, for next ten days or so, to volunteer at the Writers Festival. Looking forward to it, as well as seeing many friends. Otherwise, we would probably have gone to as many of the screenings, as possible, at the We Love Documentary Film Weekend, at the Shatford. Must away as I need to pack. We also want to stop at Costco, in Abbotsford, for "cheap" gas as well as some groceries for week ahead. We will stay in a friend's place, at Harbour Terrace, building where we used to live, as she, Joanne, is in Arizona until the end of the week. Then we will move downstairs for remainder of stay, to freeload with Flamin' and Sarge. We have invited other close friends, Elaine and Ted, for dinner this evening as we often stay with them and want to reciprocate their unbelievable hospitality. Will play some bridge as well. Not sure if F/S will join us as they flew to New York for the weekend to see a Seahawks game. They have seasons tickets in Seattle and Flamin's cousin, in NY, with whom they will stay, has seasons tickets there, for Jets, I presume but really don't know as I spit on professional sports! Lives of The Rich and Famous!!!
On another tough matter, slightly "better" but nevertheless terribly upsetting development with Ted Keating. (See below for Elaine's more detailed account.) We first learned about this when we called, from Penticton, a week before VWF, to invite them to dinner. At that time Elaine mentioned that Ted had aged considerably since I last saw them in July when I stayed with them over Folk Fest weekend. I felt he looked fairly tired but put it down to the kitchen renovation they were doing at that time. At any rate, we really didn't know what to expect but were hoping to learn more when they were to have dinner at Harbour Terrace. We were staying at Joanne Trueman's apartment for most of the time as she was in Phoenix.
At any rate, I went down to The Heartbreak Terrace, around 6:30 pm, (time we had decided upon), to let them in. When they didn't show by 7:00 pm I headed back to JT's and met Lady Dar in the hallway, on the brink of tears. Elaine had called to say they were not coming as Ted had fallen, (She refers to this in her detailed account.), on the way to the car to come over! Fortunately, he was not hurt but she was so distraught that she was afraid to take him out even though he said he was fine. Flamin' and Sarge came for dinner and we had a good visit but were all disturbed by what had happened, of course. I called on Monday to see how things were and Elaine was still too, too upset to speak so she sent this message: Hi Patrick & Corinne, This is the message I sent to Ted's brother yesterday. Sorry about the phone call but the gravity of the situation is just sinking in. We'd love to see you both but don't think I can talk about what is happening right now. Not sure how much you know about what has been happening with Ted, but I was waiting to hear back from more of the tests before contacting you.
After Ted got back from his golf trip in Winnipeg, he wasn’t sleeping at night but slept most of the day. His balance became very shaky and he had trouble walking or standing. He stopped playing golf and virtually did nothing. He didn’t engage with company and became almost anti-social, picking up his phone, book or I-pad when guests were over. He stopped doing any chores around the house and had no interests but would sleep in front of the tv all day & evening. In August Ted had a fall and ending up with stitches to his hand when the plate he was carrying broke. Ted fell again on a small hike while we were in Victoria early September, but just a minor sprain and some bruising.
Ted has been to an ears, nose throat specialist who ruled out inner ear or Ménière’s disease. He has been going to a Vestibular Physiotherapist who gives him exercises to do. For a while Ted did some of the rotations but then felt if he had completed 2 out of the 5 sets, he was doing okay. However, in the last 2 weeks he has been much better at completed the sets.
Ted paid to have a private MRI so that we could get the results early. We saw a neurologist Sept 12 (Dr Jeff Beckman) and he said that the MRI shows small vessel changes which could just be normal signs of aging. He felt that the small blood vessels could have activated the high blood pressure - for which our family doctor had prescribed a very low dosage of blood pressure medication. There was no atrophy on the cerebellum - nothing showing on the back of the brain. So no signs of mini strokes - big relief.
We asked if the metvix topical treatment Ted had to treat the cancerous cells on his scalp, could have had any affect, but he ruled that out. Also ruled out the cataract surgery as he said that should have improved any balance issues. And because he saw signs of Ted improving at that time, he felt that he did not have to see him for another 8 months. He said most of his patients either remain the same or get worse so Ted is doing well. Dr Beckman said when we come back in 8 months he would do some cognitive testing to see if there are any changes.
Since that time however, Ted has had 2 other falls. One going down the front stairs on Sunday night at 6:45 and the other last night at 7:15 coming back from Safeway when he walked down the corner slope. Neither fall was serious but both were scary. Ted has been having trouble remembering things, is very confused and repetitive. He often does not know where he is and has no sense of direction. If he walks for half an hour, he is totally exhausted and can barely stand up. He hadn’t driven for a couple of months (partly because we were away and partly because we don’t need to use our car very often), but when he did get in the car he backed up into our neighbour’s parked car. He had backed into another parked car in July and when we were in SF he had a couple of erratic driving adventures almost hitting a police car. Now Ted just automatically gets in the passenger side. His behaviour both physically and mentally changes drastically in the evenings when he is more tired.
We just came back from the doctors today where Ted took the MOCA test - Montreal Cognitive Assessment. He was given the harder test first which he scored 23 out of 30. The easier test he scored 28 out of 30. The concern is his short term memory. Ted can’t recall in order a list of 3 or 5 random words. Dr. Lau is setting up an appointment at the Geriatric Clinic at VGH. He has chosen this clinic over UBC because they test both for dementia/Alzheimer’s plus the balance issue.
Dr. Lau had asked to reschedule the prior appointment with the neurologist because he felt the initial report was not thorough enough and did not address any neuromuscular issues such as Parkinson’s or ALS, etc. He thought Ted’s tiredness might be one of the symptoms. Appointment has been moved up to January but Dr. Lau thought that would be soon enough since Ted will be doing other tests at VGH. Ted was tested for Lyme disease but the test came back negative as there were no blood abnormalities. The doctor did not recommend taking any medication even though the test results have a high percentage of false negatives and false positives.
Ted’s blood pressure was really low today - 105/70. Was told to stop taking the Ramipril medication (initially prescribed because his blood pressure at the time was over 140). The medication might be the reason Ted has been having so many falls and is also the reason his throat has been irritated. We’re quite happy with how pro-active our young doctor is. He seems genuinely concerned and takes time to listen and answer any concerns. The appointment lasted about 45 minutes. Ted still has to take a sleep apnea test and he has a CT scan booked for the end of October. He says he is not anxious about any of this but is still trying to remember some of words from the test. Hopefully we get more answers and/or some help. Sorry this has taken me so long to contact you but I wanted to give you as much info as possible as I know how concerned you are. I will send further results as we get them.
Fondestos from Lady Dar and Chloë, both still abed. Etta and Duke are outside again after I fed them their breakfast! All the best to one and all. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi all Sorry to hear about Gayle losing a good friend so suddenly. Good that she will get in a visit with Krissy after the life celebration and have a few days before traveling again.
Spent the day with Alex yesterday as Sam was off for a bachelorette weekend for her friend Danielle who gets married to Josh next month on the 12th of November. The girls rented an apartment in downtown LA to all be with the out of towners who came for the bachelorette. They were doing a fancy steak dinner, a Malibu winery, nightclubs and a final brunch this morning. Alex and I went for sushi and then bought shoes at The Rack :)...quite a blissful day!
Pierre is traveling to the Dominican Republic this month on the 24th and is very excited. He is going with his friends Chris, Katie and Quan...His friend Kevin Lenik (Chris and Katie's brother) is playing professional baseball on the Caribbean island and they're going to cheer him on and do some sightseeing for six days.
I've been busy working but looking forward to a couples bridal shower next Saturday for friends who are, coincidentally, are having their wedding in the Dominican Republic in January. The groom is a Captain in the LA fire department and was a great help to Alex through the application process. Then I will have Robbie, Chloe's bestie, here the 27th and then the wedding on the 12th next month. PS: Delivered the Penticton birthday cards to the Libras xoxo Love to all Ayn Xoxo
Hello to the feline fanciers family! Yes thank you for the Thanksgiving wishes as well. We thought of you a lot this past weekend as we met with friends who live in Penticton. In The Fall we usually visit Davison orchard in Vernon to stock up on apples, pears as well as their exquisite spices and preserves and met LaChina's there for lunch. As they have their own bakery on site, lunch is quite tasty. I must say that visit was the only time I regretted being on a low carb diet. When Lacina's lived in Burnaby we used to meet them once a year in Penticton as that is where the two 'boys' grew up together. They were telling us that the motel where we would stay has now been turned into a low cost housing project.
By the way, we meant to ask them about that fire on the news, but forgot.
Dana has yet again enrolled in another certificate course at TRU. She will be able to paper her room with certificates soon. I think the Accountant Technician course will help her in her objective to eventually be able to work from home. She is very detail oriented and good at math. Her Computer Systems and Operation Management Certificate as well as her Arts Degree should provide her with some course credit so maybe it won't take her the two years to complete the course and will be able to pursue a part time job in the meantime as she plans. I see you are getting in your rides before the snow flies. Yesterday we saw our first powder coating here. I must get my bulbs in....Cheers Brenda Hugs to all
Hello, Patrick and Corinne: Just a quick note as I have scoped some possible dates for an early winter jaunt to Penticton: Sunday, November 19 - Tuesday, November 21 Saturday, November 25 - Monday, November 27 Saturday, December 2 - Monday, December 4 Some of these dates would require that I check about replacement at work, because I would be applying a stat-in-lieu (which I need to do by December 9th), but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a problem. Are any of the above dates better-or-not-so-good-for-you? I know you are always very busy and the pre-Christmas period is generally a bit frenetic in any case. In which event, we could also defer to the New Year, if that's your preference (and I will use that owed-stat day to bake and shop!) Janet
Hi Janet, I think December dates would be best for us. As we may go over to the island for a week or so. We are in Vancouver to volunteer once again for the writers fes. Should be a busy week lots of great authors to see. Cheers, CorinneHello, Corinne and Patrick: Well, I should have checked my work-calendar, because it turns out that there IS a conflict in my December calendar (a CityLearn course), which I am taking this as a signal from the universe that I should hold off on Penticton until the New Year. It might be better overall anyway, as December tends to be such a busy time. January / February is usually a quieter time, and it would be a welcome respite and a nice thing to look forward to. So I'll be in touch later about possible dates in early 2018. Hope you are enjoying the Writers' Fest! Janet

Thank you for your many kind messages and offers to help during this terrible crisis. As the fires continue to move through Sonoma and adjacent counties, Dry Creek Valley thankfully remains free of fire danger. We were fortunate enough to celebrate our last day of harvest on Friday October 6th just prior to the awful events that began Sunday night.
Our hearts go out to our fellow wineries and neighbors who have been impacted by the tragedy, as well as the dedicated fire crews and emergency first responders who are working so hard to protect our lives and our property. As many of you know, we were closed this last week to keep an eye on the Pocket Fire in Geyserville, finish pressing, and prepare the October Wine Club. We're now up and running again with limited hours.
We’re happy to report that after some initial evacuations, all of our staff and their families are safe. A special thanks to Jose and Josh who came in to press wine, Salvador and his wife Norma who helped pack the wine club, and especially Jesse, Martha, and Catarino who were here directly after evacuations.
Barring any further unforeseen circumstances, all of our wine club members whose credit cards have been charged as of 10/10/17 should be getting their FedEx shipping notices on either Monday the 16th or Tuesday the 17th. We'll catch up soon with the later wine club updates, as well as recent internet and futures order that were placed this past week. We thank you for your patience and understanding with regard to any delays.
It has been so heartwarming and inspiring to see what so many people are doing to support our community in this time of need. Please keep sending the good thoughts and if you would like to help with the fire relief, there are many opportunities to do so. Here are just a couple of suggestions:
A local bank, Redwood Credit Union (RCU), in partnership with RCU Community Fund, the Press Democrat, and Senator Mike McGuire, is now accepting financial donations to aid relief efforts and assist victims of the 2017 North Bay fires. 100% of your tax-deductible donations will go directly to support those affected by the fires. North Bay Relief Fund - DONATE
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. American Red Cross Wildfire Relief Fund - DONATE
If you would like to stay updated on the Pocket Fire, Supervisor James Gore has been posting fantastic videos on Facebook each morning along with the Battalion Chief of Cal Fire.

Hi Old Farts, Six of us had a magnificent hike last week. The Lundbom Lake area was dressed up in its first dusting of snow, and the trees and grasslands were clad in their finest too. This week, we’ll stay a bit closer to home, attacking the slopes of Parker Mountain from White Lake Road. We will: -1- meet at 0800 at Home Hardware north parking lot in Penticton (0740 at IGA in Summerland). -2- carpool and head for our starting spot on the south side of Parker. -3- enjoy the day and hopefully the autumn colours up on Mt. Parker -4- return to vehicles and choose a location for debriefing and refreshment -6- return to P’ton It is getting cooler each week, and showers are forecast for Thursday, so dress appropriately and perhaps bring some extra warm stuff. Interested? Give me a nod if you are. I look forward to a beautiful day! Cheers Jim
