Everything But The Kitchen Sink Blues: Monday, August 20th!

The door of a bigoted mind opens outwards so that the only result of the pressure of facts upon it is to close it more snugly. -Ogden Nash, poet (19 Aug 1902-1971)

Lady Dar was out watering and gardening before 7:00 am this morning. Had plenty of help though as Etta and Duke were making sure she was doing a good job. More heavy smoke so no riding again. Have our fingers crossed that that plumber will magically appear, this morning, to install sink and that Tom, cabinet installer, will return to put open shelving in place. Lady Dar picked up a batt of insulation yesterday and we want to put it in the wall between living room and the bathroom to muffle the sound of the water moving through the pipes feeding the sink and toilet. Tom opened up three section in the dry wall as he needed to expose the studs in order to attach shelf brackets.

Hi Brenda Louise! Trust you are well in spite of heavy smoke. Thick as pea soup here, as you probably know. I do apologize for not being in touch sooner. No excuses but plenty of reasons! Fondestos from Lady Dar, just off to volunteer at Soupateria, serving meals to the homeless, etc.. Stay well. Hello to your Men, avian and human! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Dear Patrick, Corinne and Chloe: Great to hear from you! You have really had a busy and productive time. Would like to get Janet's email from you as we are thinking of a trip to India. Your pictures of the Peach Festival were most interesting. Just bought peaches this past weekend. Nothing can compare to Okanagan peaches. I was just talking to a lady in the sauna at Byng Pool who was telling us how to can them easily. For my part, I think I will just settle with eating them.

Hello Duhlink! Still talking after 48 years!I do apologize for not replying sooner but last few weeks have been a whirlwind of kitchen renovation, moving and social activity, speeding up, even more as we twirled and spun towards the completion of kitchen! [Tom, cabinet installer, where fridge will go, after finishing wall shelves next to malt cabinet!] Getting there as sink was finally installed yesterday and gas stove-top is supposed to be fitted today. Few bits and pieces to go but at least we can use most everything we need, especially the wine fridge with 134 bottle capacity! When are you and Madcap returning as we need to make room in it. Fondestos from Lady Dar, to you and Madcap. Stay well. Take care of each other. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Patrick, just thought I would share what is a perfect evening for me! but however, I prefer Polish beer after a long ride (are we there yet). Thank you for including me in that trip Patrick . take care See Dad, all your male friends love you and want you to know!!! #friendship #menfeeltoo❤️❤️

Hello The Sisterhood! I think I'll plan a Love Fest when Ms Tinsel Town is in town. Plan to invite Glasgow, Sarge and Big Al. Anybody have any spare drums? Cheers, Dad, Patrizzio, Sensitive New Age Male! I think spending more time with Matt, Sarge and Al would be very good for you. They are all warm, lovely men and could be a very good influence. It's never too late to work on being nicer to the sisterhood xo My every waking moment, [indeed, in dreams as well], is already dedicated to making the lives of The Collective Sisterhood, easier, better and far more enjoyable so I really don't need any, by association, gentler, kinder influences. It's never too late to stop being The Make-over Polizei/Jewish Mother. Oy Vey, Already!

Hi North Pender Polish Beer Preferrer! Terrific to hear from you, Glasgow, even if you are forced to drink beer not necessarily your first choice! With respect to bike trip, for my part I was more than absolutely delighted that you were able to join group. After an otherwise marvellous, accident-free month of cycling, too, too bad, for me, at least, that it ended as it did. You were probably sipping Finnish beer while I was stumbling around Auschwitz and Krakow!

Haven't been riding since my return. However, played bridge with friends last night and Gilliana, hostess, mentioned she has been out riding every day over last week or so. Michaelo, chap in snaps in blue shirt, is Polish and he has never been to the The Wieliczka Salt Mine. He was keen to hear all about that excursion as well as rest of my saga, post bike trip. He wants me to write a novel about trials and tribulations and he'll produce block buster film! Would you be willing to play alongside Brad Pitt? Fondestos from Lady Dar, to you and Catherine. Stay well, Glasgow. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

The summer is slipping away. Have been to several Bard on the Beach performances. Loved Macbeth and As You Like It was very clever as they incorporated about 20 Beatles tunes into the play as it was set in the 60's. Really amusing and brilliant. Lysistrata was disappointing but I was happy to see Quelemia Sparrow perform, she is one of the Sparrow kids from Musqueam. This play by Aristophanes is an interesting but the performance reminded me of "junior high" rendition as they used homemade props and silliness such as "pool noodles" for the male caste members' erections??? Basic plot is pretty interesting--in order to try to push the Spartan and Athenian men to broker a peace, the women get together and decide to withhold sex. Interesting idea but I am not sure it would work. Most times I find the Greek plays still resonate in today's world but this one didn't work for me.

Went to see the Black K Klansmen movie --really recommend it--political and alarming in regards to racism in the US and the Ku Klux Klan. Mission Impossible was just over the top and as much as I like Tom Cruise--the plots are just too predictable. And I will go this week to Crazy Rich Asians--have heard that it is quite amusing. Have been reading a bunch of intermediate novels for a CCBC reading committee. I think I will have to stop my involvement in such endeavors as it gets to tedious but I love getting together so much with Sharon Freeman and the group that I can't seem to stop.

We continue to operate our AirBNB and have been busy. More guests come on Wednesday so we will have to do some major clean up in preparation. Our outside painting project has really been put on hold. It has been too hot for me and now it is too smokey. Today has been terrible.

I did go to UBC Rare Books and Special Collections today with Judi Saltman and Kathie Shoemaker--for a meeting with Katherine Kalsbeek, Chelsey Shrirer and Susan Andrews about the children's literature collections at UBC. It was fun. Judi is pretty well and her breast cancer for now is in remission. She will stay on a drug for the next 5 years that will suppress her estrogen as her breast cancer is estrogen related. She has lost weight and goes regularly for exercise. The Education Library has hired a librarian for my position--Emily Fornewalde. She was one of our student librarians and hails from Saskatchewan--I am very happy as she is both a teacher and librarian.

Thought you and Corinne might be interested in the BC Book Prizes Online Auction that is underway now. https://bcbookprizes.ca/auctions/ All funds raised help support the Book prizes and author tours. Send to others as you see fit. Some more sad news. Peter Moody's partner Susan passed away. Also our coach friend Don Currie had a stroke last Saturday. Oh dear now it will be a long rehab road to recovery. Fortunately Colin and I are well. We send you our love-- and for the birthday girls--belated birthday greetings. Take care of yourselves and enjoy the last days of summer. Resourcefully yours Jo-Anne

Hi AirBNB People! Trust you are well in spite of your busy, busy AirBNB lives! I didn't know you were engaged in the hospitality trade! We are as well but only manage to attract Freeloaders so not really a paying business! No wonder you are travelling the world!

Very sorry to learn of Susan's death. I did not know her but I had heard the incredible story of the grizzly attack. As well, Don Currie's stroke is very upsetting. Wish him well with what, as you say, will probably be a difficult recovery. Must say that we didn't know about Judi's breast cancer. We would see her, about town, when in Vancouver, fairly regularly, but seem to have have lost touch, particularly since our move. Please send along best wishes when you bump into her.

Must away now as I want to work on filling the bookshelves, [Thanks for link to BC Book Prizes Online Auction], above my computer desk and have the rest of my office reorganized before The Marriage Officiant is back from running errands and starts barking out orders! Fondestos from her to you both. All the very best. Stay well and keep doing AirBNB laundry! Cheers, Patrizzio!

An update, as of Mon. evening: I think we all were a bit too optimistic. Karl’s recovery has slowed down and his early discharge from the hospital had to be revised. He is still there. I talked to Pat and I understand that Karl had a slight relapse, had a rough couple of days, but as of yesterday is showing signs of improvement. She is hopeful that he is on the mend. I plan to go to see him tomorrow and I will let you know what the situation is. He welcomes visit, but please, BRIEF. Let’s continue sending him our positive thoughts. Al
