We all too often have socialism for the rich and rugged free market
capitalism for the poor. -Martin Luther King, Jr., civil-rights leader
(1929-1968)
Soccer Boy wanted to start his drills at 5:30 am so he knocked the paperback I had covering his practice balls off the bureau, onto the floor, and brought one of his favourite crumpled pieces of paper onto the bed and proceeded to worry it, particularly next to me. When I refused to be lured into participating, he settled down nicely and went back to sleep.
When I opened my eyes again, at 7:30 am, he was content, surprisingly, not to move a muscle, as I alighted. Still, he was first to go outside, Miss Etta, who was sleeping on the chair in hallway, remained inside while I prepared their pumpkin/crunchie mix. She is becoming very good about shaking a paw for her food so am pleased with their behaviour modification! For his part, Duke came in a few minutes later and likewise, he shook a paw. He is far better at doing this when Etta isn't around as he seems to be confused when she is already eating from her bowl. I think he feels hurt that she was served first when he is the older brother and should have preference to be served before her!
Hi Tinsel Town! Just received this from Jessica on Messenger. What is the deal with her? Will she be at the wedding? Trust all goes well. Etta and Duke send their feline regards to Sir Winston! Love, Dad! Pics: From Jessica! Etta is getting her beach towel ready for Zuma Beach! Duke practicing for palm tree climbing in LA!
Hi again, Coquihalla Goil! You might want to pick up a couple of containers of Bocconcini , along with everything else. As well, The Break, if available. Had a brief note from Maggie regarding her deteriorating hip. Sounds as if she is in pretty rough shape. Anyway, The Frisky felines are agitating for yard work so must away to work on compost foe my darling green thumb! Love and Cheers, Patrizzio! At Costco, just gassed up now to the shopping. See you soon, CoraLee
Hello Duhlink! Glad you found turn-off! Onward! Now Merritt exit is next hurdle. You'll be fine. Judy was at Costco in Kelowna a day or so ago, and she said Peachland is really in rough shape due to flooding. Etta and Duke just came dashing in as there was a huge truck in back lane. Looked like it was pumping out something from a sewer line. Travel safely. Love, Patrizzio!
Hi Tuesday Night Players! Had a great evening last night. Heard from Fast Phillipo that Olga Polga, on yesterday's hike, had committed for this evening so we will have one table. [Have a water bottle here, from Jack rabbit, left at their place last week. It will become a bridge prize if it isn't yours, Rolly Polly! You need to tie string to your slippers as well!] Had a note from Lady Dar, about an hour ago, and she was filling up and doing a bit of shopping at Costco, in Abbotsford, so she'll be back in plenty of time to open a bottle of Orofino Cabernet Franc Rosé for The Sisterhood! Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: One table people!
Hi Ragin'! I must really apologize for not replying to your earlier message, and your somewhat caustic reminder, delivered by today's post, but life seems to have been even more hectic with shelves to fill! Fortunately, with respect to The Coveted Cabinet Caper June 19th will work, but in a somewhat abbreviated form as Lady Dar and I will be driving to Vancouver, on Sunday, June 18th, for a concert, [Present from Chloë for both Mother's and Father's Day!], on the 19th, our stay bleeding into Tuesday.
Lady Dar arrived back this afternoon, [She drove into Vancouver this past Friday morning to stay overnight with Chloë and then drive to Squamish on Saturday to meet with Leah, [eldest daughter of Ruth/Rick], and Mason about their wedding. (Lady Dar will perform wedding at Little Shuswap in mid-August.) Leah's shower was that afternoon. Back home today as her Book Club, in Vancouver, was on Monday.], and we will be home until Sunday, June 18th, other than a wedding on Saturday, June 3rd and another on Saturday, June 10th. However, these only involve a few hours each of those days. If you can see a "window" during this period that would be grand but don't worry as we won't give the cabinet away! Let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly.
Friends, Jo-Anne and Colin, [I believe you've met them at any number of our Island Inn bashes.], en route from Edmonton, arrived just after 6:00 pm Sunday evening. Colin called around 4:00 pm, from the Best Western, and Jo-Anne had just gone in for a dip as it was really baking! They brought two bottles of wine, a Rosë and a red, both from around Kelowna. Colin wanted to open the red as he was curious to know if I could identify a taste he couldn't. I wasn't much help as I didn't notice anything remarkable although it was very drinkable. As well, they brought a lovely hanging basket as Jo-Anne wanted to give Corinne something following Dusty's death. I have put it on back patio, for now, and Lady Dar can decide where she'd like it once home. Earlier, yesterday, Etta was guarding it, curled up on a near-bye chair!
We started off the evening with an Upper Bench Riesling and enjoyed some appetizers, (humous and two types of lovely radish from Saturday's Farmers' Market, along with some gherkins and rice crackers), on the front patio and it was most pleasant as back patio was really warm. Even a slight breeze so it was most comfortable. While we were chatting Amanda and Kayla, neighbours, came out to take their pooch, Jasper, for a swim, to cool off. When back I invited them for a drink and they ended up staying for dinner. Kayla only ate the roasted potatoes, three helpings, with Ketchup, and Amanda had salad and three helpings of beets, (again from FM), I'd fixed as a cold salad with a mustard dressing. [Still enough pork loin for dinner when Lady Dar is back today!]
Kayla made us all cones for dessert so it was a lovely evening. When she and Amanda said goodnight we sat around the living room and Colin and I enjoyed a few snorts of malt before they left. They were driving back to Vancouver on Monday. I had a note from Jo-Anne just before they were off and they were going to take a look at her brother's expensive view property near Howling Bluff in Naramata! He's a dentist in Edmonton!
Yesterday morning, shortly after I had finished my watering chores I was thinking about a bite to eat and there was a knock on front door. Turned out it was a courier with latest release from Orofino, in Keremeos. I knew that my credit card had been charged but I either missed announcement of pick-up party or else there wasn't one. Anyway, knew Lady Dar would be extremely pleased as there were three bottles of Cab Franc Rosé in shipment! She's mad for Rosé in the hot weather!
Her Watchtower Women were by a few minutes later, [Lovely, older ladies and we always have a nice chat.], and she must attend their convention in June. I signed her up! Only $1,000 but I don't need the single malt anyway!
Enjoyed a very pleasant table of bridge that night. We only played three rounds, with a different partner each time, and then everyone felt it was time to go, just after 9:00 pm. Fine with me as it had been a busy day. Went for a fabulous ride to OK Falls but did a series of my regular routes beforehand. Wanted to take a look at Lakeshore and it reminded me more of the Seawall around Stanley Park as water is almost lapping the sidewalk! Judy Blue, (one of bridge players), was talking to a city worker earlier in the day and she said that city officials are worried about some very strong winds predicted for either Wednesday or Thursday. The resulting wave action could be very devastating. As well, much/most of the beach sand will be gone when water recedes so more time and expense for city.
On my way to OK Falls I circled around Skaha Lake Park and it was quite busy. Beach there is completely unaffected so I guess it will be busier than ever until Lakeshore is repaired. Almost came to grief as there were so many well-endowed, bikini-clad babes sunning that I almost had a serious encounter with a stanchion! Fortunately, ever since close cycling friend, Big Al, did run afoul of a nasty stanchion, on the Seawall, near Plaza of Nations, lo these many years ago, I have been cycling with the StanchOmeter, a gizmo he quickly devised after almost losing his manhood. He gave me the Beta model for my 65th birthday, if I recall correctly! Only disadvantage is that the alarm sound is a wolf-whistle so the bronzing babes think I'm ogling them, [Not Googling them!], when I ride by!
At any rate, by the time I hit Eastside the wind had changed direction and was now out of the South. I didn't mind as I'd rather have it behind me on return leg. Day was absolutely gorgeous and I certainly enjoyed the green hills, noting the the verdant pastures and orderly vineyards on the various benches, as I breezed along. Did the Oliver Ranch Road/Stag's Hollow Loop before heading back and was chuffed that I had a nice push from the wind as I was expecting to battle it all the way home when I started. Back home by 5:15 pm so I had to be a tad sharpish about showering and changing and then having dinner, all delicious overlefts. Topped the remains of yesterday's salad with three sausages that were from Saturday's dinner. Judy was first to arrive and we had a pleasant chat before Jack Rabbit and Phillipo knocked.
Just finished adding compost to vegetable patch extension. Nine pails of aged, (two years old), fertilizer so I believe my cukes will be fit for the Kew Gardens Fall Fair! Felt a bit like an archaeologist excavating a midden as I encountered the remains of many a chicken or turkey dinner. Nevertheless, great compost if I don't say so myself! Forecast, for once, was correct as it had suggested there may well be showers and/or a thunderstorm tonight. Since prognostication was true, we don't have to water! Have to say I actually don't mind a tad more rain after all this hot, hot weather. That being said, house is very comfortable and "your" bedroom is noticeably cool, even though we haven't put on air-conditioner. Kittens are pretty lethargic around 11:00 am as they obviously feel the heat.
Had a fun-filled table of bridge this evening with Olga Polga and Naramata Goil. Lady Dar was back by 3:30 pm so plenty of time to unpack and reintroduce herself to the clockwork rhythms of Burns Street! Before the rain started we opened the screened windows and had a terrific cross-draft. As soon as thunder started, Duke and Etta hid in Lady Dar's closet as they are both spooked by the noise! Had a fun-filled table of bridge this evening with Olga Polga and Naramata Goil. Lady Dar was back by 3:30 pm so plenty of time to unpack and reintroduce herself to the clockwork rhythms of Burns Street! Quite a bit of respectable thunder and lightening as I scribe. Duke and Etta are hiding in Lady Dar's closet as they are both spooked by the noise and light show! We have the windows open but screens keep out bugs so we can enjoy the cool night air. Take care of yourself, Sailboat Man! When I first saw snap I assumed you had finally launched your Dad's boat! Not a bad way to get rid of it! Cheers, Il Conduttore/Patrizzio!
Yesterday's project was adding compost to vegetable patch extension. Nine pails of aged, (Two years old, started when we first moved in!), fertilizer so pleased that we are seeing return on investment in two compost bins. Felt a bit like an archaeologist excavating a midden as I encountered the remains of many a chicken or turkey dinner. Nevertheless, great compost if I don't say so myself! Once I'd covered over the trench where I'd dumped the compost I watered the entire extension down and it has settled nicely. Quite a lightening show and thunderstorm last night so that helped with more soaking. Have to say I actually don't mind a tad more rain after all this hot, hot weather. That being said, house is very comfortable and "your" bedroom is noticeably cool, even though we haven't put on air-conditioner. Lately, kittens have been pretty lethargic around 11:00 am as they obviously feel the heat.
Pics: Front Patio with GT's! Choice of whites! Freeloaders! Etta guarding hanging basket! Orofino! Driver said he made sure delivery was just in time for breakfast! My kind of chap! Duke's new spot, under patio table, in the heat of the day. Compost! Last of nine pails! Bridge Babes!
I do want to get going on the works. Returning with you that June weekend would suit admirably. Do you have a spare bike I can use to slow you down for the first hundred yards? I'm not sure abt expertise but I can sure swear like a tradie. S
Hi Swears Like A Trooper Tradie! A few choice cuss words are better than a straight cut any day! We will be leaving home on Sunday, June 18th, to stay for two nights, with Flamin' and Sarge, to attend concert, [Bonnie Raitt, combined Mother's/Father's Day present from Chloë], on Monday, returning on Tuesday morning. Not sure what your travel plans include following our stay here but I am driving back into Vancouver on June 28th to collect Sarge for the trip to LA. Again, you are welcome to ride shotgun unless you already have a flight booked. Are you thinking about another visit to Alberta?
If so you might consider that after bike lockers have been christened, or at least underway, and then back to Penticton to head into Vancouver with me. Just a few thought to let you know my schedule so that you can better decide what fits with your plans.
Yes, I do have an extra bike, (Two in fact, although one is in "storage", in Naramata at Il Palazzo di Lighthall, until lockers are ready!), so you are most welcome to it. In fact, I think I'll retrieve second Brodie in the next few days to take it in for a tune-up as it hasn't been ridden in two years, since we moved! That way, we'll be able to ride the KVR together. The tires on my road bike are too narrow for comfortable riding on the hard-pack gravel of most of the KVR surface. Cheers, Il Conduttore/Patrizzio! Pics: Iris planted with bulbs from Dusty's garden.
Hello South Okanagan Bridge Society Members! Just a reminder that Lady Dar and I will be hosting the next gathering, a pot-luck. Non-playing significant others are invited as well. Mme Coriandre will be doing chicken on the bbq and Olga Polga a Caesar salad as Naramata Goil just informed me that she is unable to attend, (having initially argued to bring same), due to company from Calgary. For the rest of those who will join group, we should probably have an appetizer or two, perhaps another salad, a vegetable dish of some sort and a dessert. Open to other menu suggestions as well.
Please let me know, at your earliest convenience, who will be coming and what you would like to contribute. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Tuesday's one table!
