Riding on Sunshine and The Fridge Bandido Blues: Thursday, March 26th!

We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way. -Viktor Frankl, author, neurologist and psychiatrist, Holocaust survivor (26 Mar 1905-1997)

Hi All, You probably have heard, but I want to let you know that the Kiwanis Quiz Night has been postponed from the April 29th date. We hope to host it in the fall of 2020 and I will let you know when an alternate date has been selected. I hope you are all doing well during this difficult period. Regards, Doug Button Thanks Doug, all good, although I love to start hugging again. Luckily I still sleep with Jos! Aart

Hello Quiz Masters and Trivia People! We assumed the Kiwanis event would be postponed but thanks for confirming that this is the case. In fact, this delay should give our teams time to practice so that the most disciplined one will win top prize! To this end, we need to set up a Zoom conference call to pick the members for each of the rival groups!

Time to spend time reading The Guinness Book of Records, Farmers' Almanac and at least ten Wikipedia entries, based on your personal and professional predilections, per day! Cheers, Patrizzio, former Reach for the Top contestant! First individual to reply telling me what this refers to will be rewarded with a virtual hug, immediately, and an actual dram of malt when "normal" life resumes! PS: Hanneke/Doug and Michelle/Antonio: Welcome home! Did the pandemic affect your trips to NZ? I trust you didn't visit any farms when there! Thanks Doug. I think that the crisis is going to last for quite some time. Cheers, Tim Hello Summerland Cousins! Trust you have recovered from your colds. I agree that we are not going to be out of the virile woods, so to speak, for some time! Fondestos from Lady Dar to you both. Until then, take care of yourselves and stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Ha ha !!! Don't fall off your bike if you see me wearing one! Vanessa changed plans her team is staging an event remotely in Halifax. Changing times I am happy to hear lady dar is treating you well and her in return Missing you both
Vanessa is planning on Saturday now Xoxo Judy blue aka crazy cat lady!! Hi

Crazy Cat Lady! You remind me of Bertha Rand from St. James, Winnipeg, who was a local eccentric. For years, she battled her neighbours and city hall to save her dozens of cats. Quite outspoken, Bertha criticized the bylaw that was coming into effect limiting the number of cats allowed in a household. Bertha said she only had 20 cats but some though she had close to 50. Jailed briefly in 1967 for balking at the bylaw, she still refused to surrender her collection of cats. Eventually, the city gave up trying and neighbours continued to endure the presence of Rand's pets as well as the strays that came around for handouts. Bertha died in hospital, Dec. 31, 1981 at the age of 86. After her death, her nephew rounded up the pet cats and found homes for the healthy ones in Balmoral, Manitoba.

You, Crazy Cat Lady, can be Penticton's Bertha! Will ride today but have to vacuum first as Lady Dar will use her new, handy, dandy electric power steamer to do the floors. Spring Cleaning comes to The Burns Street Bistro! Pleased Vanessa is still coming, if later. Fondestos from Lady Dar, with a bandana in her hair, an apron around her waist and elbow length rubber gloves to protect her nails, not really used to performing such mean household chores, usually, regularly assigned to minions, while she sips Quarinitinis! Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Fridge Bandito this morning! Steam cleaner! Exciting medical discovery! AMurica! Cocktails, anyone?

Spent most of the morning answering my daily quota of messages, laying a fire and bringing in a couple of baskets of firewood, it was time to vacuum for Lady Dar to enable her steam clean the floors! This chore discharged, [Both Duke and Etta hightail it for the high ciountry as soon as I pull out the hose!], I was suited up and ready to ride by 12:15 pm. Forecast informed me that the wind was reasonably strong out of the SSE at 23 km/h, gusting to 30 km/h, so, in spite of this, I decided I'd head to Skaha Lake Park. Once past PRH Government levels off and from Dawson rest of way is, more or less, downhill so makes riding into the prevailing wind a lot easier. Once on the flat of Wilson one is relatively protected until riding on the short stretches, straight south on either Cypress or Parkview.

Even riding along the promenade on Skaha, either east or west, was not overly demanding as the gusts were more cross-winds here than anything else. Just off the marina parking lot, near Eastside, I noticed about twenty, or more, Mallards settled on the lawn just off the tarmac, happily sunning themselves. At the other end of the promenade there is a smaller parking lot and on my first circuit here I noticed it was clean of all the cones and pine needles which had littered its surface last time I rode here. Discovered why when I made my way to the opposite side of the park, a few minutes later, and noticed a city employee driving an indudstrial "vacuum cleaner", grooming the lawns of the lovely park. A few circuits later the Mallards had relocated, further north, beside the small ball diamond, unsettled, I presumed, by the hoovering!

At any rate, once I'd described my route around the park itself I retraced my "wheels" back north on Wilson, didpsy-doodling my way into each of the cul-de-sacs, en route, back to Dauphin, street I turned onto off South Main. Such a circuit is 12.5 km so I knew I'd have to complete four more before making for home if I wanted to achieve my basic distance, 61 km. While the wind was fairly chilly the sun often poked its nose through the clouds and the people out strolling, [mainly dog walkers on promenade], offered friendly nods or good afternoons, so these positive notes made the remaining circuits more of a cheerful merry-go-round than tiresome or boring.

Once I'd slogged up the always maddening incline of Dawson, [Funny how I never complaing about swooshing down at start of ride!], I had the tail wind to propel me along Government and I sailed all the way home, only having to slow down, a couuple of times, to allow intervening traffic lights to give me a Green! Home at around 3:35 pm with plenty of time to shower and change and head over to Winnipeg. Cheers! Garmin Map and Stats for ride:

Lady Dar used her new steam mop to clean the kitchen floors this afternoon. She did the kitchen area and we can now eat off the super shiny floors so I don't have to do dishes anymore and can spend the time cycling!

Rowan James continues to thrive. A bright light in these increasingly dark times. We celebrated his four month birthday today, [Cheers! Happy Four Month Birthday, Rowan James! Hip Hip Hooray! For He's a Jolly Good "Little Chap" Fellow!], ordering Japanese food from Sushi Heaven, trying, at least in a small way, to help support local restaurants. Unfortunately, the owner said their business, [take-out only, of course], has been very slow, for obvious reasons, of late. Food was, as we've come to expect, simply fabulous so thanks Sushi Heaven! As well, the basement suite, at Chloë's is progressing. Chloë spoke with the contractor, Mike, today and he said that the kitchen area will be ready to paint next Wednesday morning. This is critical as cabinets, counters, etc., are scheduled to be installed after Easter. We will have him purchase primer and the colour The Sisterhood decide upon and then Lady Dar and I will paint. This is something we can do and will certainly help save money since it only grows on the trees around the homes of everyone else!

[David Kessler Do you know a nursery where you can purchase those trees? We have room in our yard. Cactus Patrick James Dunn I assumed you, or at least Donna Florida, arborista extraordinaire, would know precisely where to find these exotics, just beyond Grizzly Peak, near the grove of cigarette trees in the Big Rock Candy Mountains. You'll need you hip waders, however, as you'll be fording the lemonade spring, following the song of the bluebird. Once there you'll find an empty boxcar which you can fill with greenbacks, twice as many if you pick $CDN from the lower branches, since our currency is worth even less these days. Don't worry about the Homeland Security thugs guarding the trees as they have wooden legs, [cloned from Trump's brain], and their viscious guard dogs have rubber teeth, cloned from the President's ability to stretch the truth! If the US/Canada border wasn't closed we'd be there, picking with you, reading The Hot Zone! Please eTransfer, $US, only, any windfall to my numbered Swiss bank account as Lady Dar needs more designer medical masks to match her last remaining one! Fondestos and Cheers!

David Kessler It will be easy to get to the Big Rock Candy Mountains too, as there is hardly any traffic! If only we weren't terrified to venture out of our own little garden, which has excellent salvia but not a single dollar tree! It's also rodents galore around here, and I doubt a harvested bill would last long due to their unflagging appetite. Make us worry about our resident titmouse and towhee! Patrick James Dunn This being the case, I let sleeping felines lie! Etta loves to curl up in the crib we have here for Rowan James!] Pics: Rowan James, post-bath; just up from afternoon nap, today, then with Nana and trying to "gum" Sophie, his giraffe, toy which has numerous ridges to help with teething; kitchen and living area drywall.

Watched a couple of episodes of Season 3, Babylon Berlin, when we were bck from Winnipeg Street. It is tremendous. The historical period, Weimar Republic, is extremely well realized, in terms of sets, costumes and cultural practice. Beforehand, at Chloë's place, we watched Uncut Gems: In 2010, Ethiopian Jewish miners retrieve a rare black opal from the Welo mine in Africa. In 2012, gambling addict Howard Ratner runs KMH, a jewelry store in New York's Diamond District. He struggles to pay off gambling debts, including the $100,000 he owes to his loan shark brother-in-law Arno. His domestic life is split between his estranged wife Dinah, who has agreed to divorce him after Passover, and his girlfriend Julia, an employee at KMH. Howard's employee Demany recruits basketball player Kevin Garnett to visit KMH, and the Ethiopian opal, which Howard had ordered, coincidentally arrives while Garnett is in the shop. He shows the opal to Garnett, who becomes obsessed with it, insisting on holding onto it for good luck at his game that night. Howard reluctantly agrees, accepting Garnett's NBA championship ring as collateral.

It must be said that I am not a fan, by any stretch of the imagination, of Adam Sandler's comedic work but wanted to see this film after hearing about his dramatic performance here. Simply remarkable, remarkable performance, by him, in particular, but also by rest of talented crew. However, this being said,  certainly not an easy movie to watch given the overy frenetic pace, hardly, if ever, interupted and, very early on, the realization that all is not going to end well, or simply cannot end well. Not so much a take on Tarantino's work, although parallels exist, but pretty close to Mean Streets where De Nero's character is his own worst enemy. Still shaking my head at this mesmerizing, downward spiraling portrait of such a doomed individual, whether snatched from Greek mythology or the pages of Shakespeare's Tragedies. Violence, as such, though always lurking just below the surface, much of the time, and malevolently so, is really not visually realized until the tightly wound, over-coiled spring snaps. The ever present prospect of potential, cascading catastrophe had our nerves peeled and hyper-jittery. Congratulations, Adam! Keep going in this direction and I'll forgive you your Golden Raspberry Awards multiple nominations!

Hi Sushi Mom, et al! Great snapolas of The Little Chap, especially his belly-button! Here are a few of the ones I took before he went to bed as well as ones of your kittens when we arrived home! Duke go up when I went to brush and floss, although he went to sleep on bathroom rug while I did so and didn't wake up to play after I was finished. Had to move Etta from my pillow as she was intent on staying there all night. Miffed, she resettled in the crook of one of your Mom's knees! Love to you and The Birthday Boy, Dad/Patrizzio! Pics: Rowan James, Nana and Sylvie the Giraffe! Drywall just off bathroom; Sleepy kittens!
Dear friends, This is just to tell you, that I arrived in Stockholm a few hours ago. Except for the flight from Comox to Vancouver being cancelled (Jane drove me there), everything was on time. I was the oldest traveller both to London and to Stockholm. Average age of passengers around 26. Now for two weeks of isolation. Bad news wherever you turn. My dwelling area is especially badly hit. The health authorities are planning to turn ice rinks (hockey season over) into morgues. BUT, family and friends over here are still healthy! Strange times. You think you're dreaming. Keep safe and enjoy life as well as possible, Kjell

Hello Stockholm and Courtenay Isolation Wards! Wonderful to hear that you, Dom Marcello, arrived safely, seemingly without incident, en route, other than Comox/Vancouver leg. Pretty grim about ice rinks having to be used as morgues! Strange times indeed!

I'm more than happy to report that the basement suite, at Chloë's is finally progressing. Once The Sisterhood decide upon paint colour Lady Dar and I will get to work. This is something we can do and will certainly help save money since it only grows on the trees in Courtenay/Comox and Stockholm!
Fondestos from her to you both Give us a shout, [Do you have FaceTime?], when you have a moment and we can catch up. Until then, stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio! Ciao, Patrizzio, Thank you so much for your, as usual, informative and entertaining report, spiced up with beautiful pics. Rowan already looks a lot smarter than last time I saw him.😝 I will see to it that I can use FaceTime (for now only Skype). Talk soon, Marcello

Hello Dear Friends! Having heard from Dom Marcello I bring greetings from Penticton. Fondestos from Lady Dar to one and all. Until then, take care of yourselves and stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Was a perfect read......thanks for that. Hope you folks are hanging in there like us. Quite different to not be able to just get out and see the country....eat out and visit friends...….so hope this will pass too...as some gas does....that isn't needed...….thanks again......Arv & Sandee

Hello Manitoba! Had heard from Swedish friend, Dom Marcello, who just arrived home, safely, seemingly without incident, en route, other than on the Comox to Vancouver leg, where flight was cancelled, back in Stockholm where some ice rinks are to be used as morgues! Fortunately for you Prairie Folk you can just put corpses in snowbanks, to save cash, as money only grows on the trees in Falcon Lake and Steinbach! Fondestos from Lady Dar to one and all. Until then, take care of yourselves and stay well. Cheers, Patrizzio!
