Tinsel Town Tour Guide Extraordinaire Xavierino Blues: Tuesday, January 2nd!

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge." -Isaac Asimov, scientist and writer (2 Jan 1920-1992)

Hello Santa Susana Pass Road Cyclist! Trust you are well Wole! Thanks again for fabulous outing. Hip Hip Hooray! Looks like tomorrow would be the best day to arrange to go for lunch. I'd like to ride first but don't know how that fits with your schedule. We are off at 10:00 am, with Pierre, as he will be our tour guide for today. I'll give you a call when we are back later today or send another message if you have replied to this one. As you can tell, I've included my descriptions of both rides! Cheers, Patrizzio! How are the snowbanks? Are you shovelling the walks? You really need to do front sidewalks so please skip spin class and work on snow removal!

Have had a simply wonderful time ever since being here. Great to be able to ride not bundled up like The Michelin Man! Alex's grad is on Thursday. We are off shortly, with Pierre, as he will be our tour guide for today. As you can tell, I've included my descriptions of both rides Ive taken with Wole! Fondestos from Nana/Lady Dar to one and all. Healthy New Year to you both, Ruth and Adrian! Trust everyone is well. Wole knows a great spot in Santa Monica so wondering if you will be around, Adrian. Let me know and we'll plan accordingly. Fondestos from Lady Dar. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pierrino collected us about 10:30 am and we headed off for LA itself, planning to visit The Broad, "a contemporary art museum on Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles. The museum is named for philanthropist Eli Broad, who financed the $140 million building which houses the Broad art collections." [Immediately beside the Broad is the stunning Los Angeles Music Center, designed by Frank Gehry, so that was a treat in itself!] Unfortunately, for us, the waiting line was at least two hours long so Lady Dar opted for the museum shop as a viable alternative. Once we'd scoped that we headed right across the street to take a look at The Museum of Contemporary Art but it was closed! However, the museum shop was open so we spent time there before making for the Grand Central Market, walking down the stairs beside Angels Flight to get there.

Place is a wonderful mix of food outlets, everything from the Belcampo Meat Co. to Jose Chiquito, from Prawn, (Lady Dar's and Pierre's choice, broth-based, seafood-focused dishes cooked in steel-jacketed steam kettles), to Wexler's Deli, (my choice, a new-traditional Jewish deli from noted Los Angeles chef Micah Wexler, ordering a Boyle Heights, (Corned Beef, Mustard, Rye), with a side of potatoe salad and a pickle), from DTLA Cheese and Kitchen to G&B Coffee to Clark Street Bread! The list goes on and on and on. Hootch of all sorts is also available!

After our scrumptious food we strolled back to the car as we had decided we'd visit the Getty Villa off Pacific Coast Highway. Ordinarily, the museum is closed every Tuesday but given the holiday on Monday it was open! Our fabulous chauffeur, Xavierino, grabbed the I-10 West which tiurns into the PCh at Santa Monica and we were soon pulling into the driveway leading to the Getty Villa. General Admission is free but parking costs $15. However, one needs to book tickets in advance so we thought we were stymied, yet again! However, young woman at the entrance-way gate said she would let this "slide", given that the museum wasn't as busy as it normally is. Delighted, we paid the parking fee and once Pierre had parked the car, we strolled through the lovely grounds to make our way to the Museum itself:

In 1954, oil tycoon J. Paul Getty opened a gallery adjacent to his home in Pacific Palisades. Quickly running out of room, he built a second museum, the Getty Villa, on the property down the hill from the original gallery.[The villa design was inspired by the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum and incorporated additional details from several other ancient sites.  It opened in 1974, but was never visited by Getty, who died in 1976.

We spent almost three hours wandering through the two floors of the museum itself, viewing the stunning collections representative of the cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean World, the Greeks, the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as enjoying the Atrium and Inner Peristyle. The Outer Peristyle was closed for renovations but the smaller East Garden with its marvellous fountains made up for this. We even saw a handsome stag grazing on the hillside beyond the garden wall. Simply delighted that we had decided to visit as the overall size and scope of the museum makes it relatively easy to view and enjoy most of the exhibits without succumbing to sensory overload. That being said, close to 4:30 pm we were ready to go so after a quick visit to the Museum Shop we waved goodbye to JP. Interestingly enough, we found much in common with him and Randolph Hearst and his remarkable "castle" in San Simeon.

Topango Canyon is not far from the Getty Villa and we were soon on it and making our way up and over and into the Valley. Once there, Pierre hopped onto the 101 and after stopping at Ralph's for a few groceries, we were back home. Ayn was still at work so Lady Dar set about readying dinner while I made a salad. Pierre was staying to eat with us and once Ayn was home she asked him to hook up her DVD so that we could watch The Post while we ate. I enjoyed performances by Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Bob Odenkirk. I have always been impressed with him ever since we'd watched Breaking Bad and then Better Call Saul. Although one knows the final outcome, to publish or not to publish The Pentagon Papers, it was fascinating to see the "backstory" unfold and then, if only briefly, be pointed towards the coming Watergate scandal. Life in Tinsel Town, Dear Reader!
