Turtle Nesting Blues: Wednesday, January 24th!

No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be true. -Nathaniel Hawthorne, writer (1804-1864)

Hi Sarge and Flamin', as well as Malt/Limoncello Lovers! Are you involved in Dram Come True, this year, Sarge? Lady Dar will probably come to town but don't think she will attend, preferring to stay with Flamin' and drink all her expensive 8th Generation! Had planned to start the day with a dip in the pool to wake up before breakfast but Lady Dr was too impatient so went directly to dining room, a large open space under a conical, thatched roof, very airy and comfortable.

Menu, here, looks very good and if the omelettes we enjoyed are any indication it will be terrific. There is live music this evening so we plan to see what that is like, once back from a mangrove tour. Apparently, turtles are nesting at the moment so we have signed on, leaving here at 5:45 pm, back around 9:00 pm. Will probably eat a late lunch at The Shrimp Hole, just around the corner, highly recommended by friends, Carol and Bruno, from Qualicum Beach, here but a week ago. Must away as Lady Dar needs more colones before we head out to explore more of Tamarindo and the beach itself. Fondestos from Her Ladyship to one and all. Cheers, Patrizzio/Il Condutore!

Do you want to go to the rugby 7’s. I am not working at the Dram because I thought it conflicted with the 7’s. I could be tricked into going. When are you back in BC. Hi again, Sarge! If you plan to attend Dram, do you want to book Early Bird tickets for both of us?I'd like to buy the VIP Admission. With respect to the 7's I think I'd like to go on Sunday only, this year, so let me know your thoughts. I can book or let you do all the work and then forget to pay you for the tickets! We will probably be back in Canada by Saturday, February 4th. If Ted Keating is still alive, (Haven't heard a word.), we will drive through Vancouver to see him and Elaine, and family, before going home. Otherwise, I think we'll head back to Penticton via Osoyoos crossing. Lady Dar has a lot of church work to do before March 4th. Fondestos from Lady Dar to you and Flamin'! Cheers, Patrizzio! PS: How was Hawaii?

I will book the tickets. Does Corinne want to go the rugby also. Saturday might be a better day than Sunday.  We are going to Hawaii on Sun feb 4th so if you are back here on Sat maybe we will get to see you. Wayne Hi again, Sarge! I meant to say February 24th, our return to Canada, not February 4th. Lady Dar will not attend the 7's. Isn't Sunday better, as finals are that day. Let me know and thanks for taking care of tickets for both Dram and '7's. Cheers, Patrizzio!

It’s Maya’s 42nd birthday today! Text her! ✌️😉 Happy 42nd, Maya! Hip Hip Hooray! Warm Wishes from Lady Dar and Patrizzio, on the beach in Costa Rica, to the frozen Sunshine Coast! Cheers! For She's a Jolly Good Fellow! Hello Pseudo-Walnut Crickers! No, please don't pull up stakes and move! Had the following disclaimer from Amos:

see you are having a great time. We will be here as far as I know. The only problem is with sleeping  over - we just do not have space for that. Otherwise it would be nice to get together again. Love, Pat & Amos

This being the case, I will write back and suggest a gathering, perhaps a meal at their place, (if they have room for that!), but otherwise it would be wonderful if Natasha and Boris will still have us. Thanks for the most generous offer, of course.

[Patrick James Dunn This little chap doesn't need treats! He just wanders across the counter tops and stools like Duke! Caught him yesterday on our stroll through town.]

After a fab breakfast of wonderful omelettes and fresh fruit, (pineapple, papaya and watermelon), spent a lovely morning strolling on the beach and then popping in to many of the souvenir shops and restaurants which line the two or three main streets. Interestingly enough, we came across a wonderful mask that seemed quite out of place as it was a typical Haida of Kwakiutl design. When we inquired it turned out that it was done by an indigenous carver from BC who has lived here for twenty years or more! A smaller sculpture, by him as well, is of a marvellous hummingbird, one wing profile, so were are thinking about buying it, a mix of both cultures, in a sense.

Must away as Lady Dar needs more colones before we head out to buy takeaway from The Shrimp Hole. Want to bring the food back to our hotel and enjoy it on the patio and sip the finest Sauvignon Blanc to be had! Fondestos from Her Ladyship to one and all. I'll be in touch once I've heard back from Living in a Black Hole Amos! Cheers, Patrizzio/Il Condutore! Pics: two iguanas on the roof of bungalow of couple, Amy and Ian, from Minneapolis, we met chatting at the pool.

When Boris downstairs by the light switch got the news, he waved his legs in glee.Let us know your dates when you figure them out but as of now there is no rush to stay here so you shouldn't feel that you must make plans right away.

We are going to stay over in Panama, we think, on our way to Chile in Sept., so your Central American riches are very tempting to us. The airline we will take stops over in Panama, making that the natural connection, so to speak. I wonder if we will find any Haida art in Panama City? Cactus Hi again, Boris! I'm glad you appreciate our coming visit! Mutual, I'm sure! Who knows what indigenous art you might well come across in Panama City! Grand that you are off to Chile. We must talk about that when we are back at Casa Vicente. Fondestos from Lady Dar to you both. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Gorgeous driftwood; best shot of retreating turtle!

Hi Patrick and Corinne Yes I am now almost fine now just got a runny nose!
1:15pm.snowing all day, -6C today, visibility poor, very windy, just came in for lunch after being out since 10am. Trevor is going out again over to the opposite mountain which will not be as windy. Tonight one of the group is cooking us an Italian feast we are really looking forward to that. Rae came over for dinner last night and brought ribs, yum, we had the girls as Mark and Bree went out for a date! Your running commentary of holiday certainly paints a vivid picture for your avid readers! Keep them coming! Love Tina!
Hello Sun Peaks!!
Glad you are on the mend, Teens! Great app, I presume, that records ski runs! Like my trusty odometre! Please you enjoy The Cosa Rican Diaries as we are certainly still enjoying Costa Rica very much. Fondestos from Her Ladyship to you and Trevorino and rest of gang. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Fartologists! Tomorrow the fearless snow yeti Larry Shannon will lead Old Fart enthuisiasts to the shelter/cabin that is situated near a small lake located north of Nickel Plate Lake. Very exciting! The starting point for this track is the Snowflake parking lot. So, as usual we will gather at the Home Hardware in Penticton at 9:00AM. Summerlanders will meet at 8:40AM at the IGA parking lot and will carpool to the Home Hardware in Penticton. For those of you who are in the Apex area already, you can meet us at the Snowflake Parking Lot (from Apex direction Nickle Plate about half way on the right side of the road). After the hike, i.e. "apres-randonnée", we will have a nice gathering at a venue of your choice! Hope to see you there tomorrow! Cheers, Aart, lost in Paradise

After our tour of Tamarindo, back to our hotel to have a refreshing dip and then read for an hour or so. Once showered and changed we enjoyed a few cocktails, (nicely cold from our fab bar fridge!, and then walked, arm in arm, to The Shrimp Hole, just around the corner, highly recommended by friends, Carol and Bruno, from Qualicum Beach, here but a week ago. Only customers and Mathilde, lovely young woman from France, served and cooked everything. Lady Dar went for Tuna Poke while I had a Green Curry Shrimp dish. Both superb. Even had Key Lime pie for dessert!

Back to our room to change for turtle excursion. It was suggested that one wear long sleeves and long pants, I suppose for skeeters and other nasty bugs which live in the mangrove swamps. I'm using Cacique instead of insect repellent as it is probably pouring out of my pores anyway! About 40 minutes in a van filled with Canadians, two from Summerland and rest from Winnipeg! Once we parked we had to walk about half an hour, over a fairly rough trail, to reach the beach. Once there, our guide, Nelson, explained the turtles' nesting behaviour and then we had to wait until other guides, stationed elsewhere along the beach, communicating, by walkie-talkies to let the three or four groups know about sightings. In order minimize the impact on the turtles we were kept well back from the three turtles we saw this evening, as each made its way out of the ocean and up towards the top of the beach, searching for an appropriate spot to build a nest and lay eggs.

Unfortunately, given the dryness of the sand, far enough away from the surf not to have the water disturb a potential nest, at this particular time of year, none of the turtles elected to lay any eggs and so after quite an interesting display of making a hollow by literally showering sand out of a given spot, with their flippers, each returned to the ocean. I was quite amazed at the tracks which they left, both coming and going, and at the size of the females in question, roughly the size of a large winter tire. Given the need not to use any flash illumination it was almost impossible, at least for me, to get any pictures of these amazing creatures.

Not that I minded, feeling fortunate just to be able to observe this grueling process, but in fact, both Corinne and I, having seen what is involved with such a tour, didn't feel all that comfortable with participating in it. Our impression is that we were actually interfering with this fragile process and in all conscience we would prefer to leave these magnificent turtles alone, to continue to reproduce without the additional stress which the noise and light which tourists inevitable bring, no matter what the well-intentioned guides do. For better of for worse, a tiny guilty glimpse into part of the life cycle of the Pacific Green Sea Turtle.

Didn't make it back to our hotel until 10:00 pm and first thing we both did was to have a shower to wash off all the sand we had managed to have adhere to us and our garments. Couple of cans of Bavaria later, for me, and a couple of glasses of Sauvignon Blanc, for Lady Dar, and we feel quite relaxed. Must away as our glasses need refilling!

Hi you monkeys, Address here is on Shadow Lake Drive, Palm Desert, CA. Park on the driveway, pulled over to the far right. Ciao, Peter Hi Patricio and Lady Dar—The address here is on Shadow Lake Drive in Palm Desert. Please park in the driveway on the far right. We’ll try to remember to leave the side gate open, but in case we forget, here is the entry code. 😘 Lynnie Hi again, Palm Desert Folk! Thank you both for sending along your address and parking instructions. I assume, all going well with loading car, Monday morning, and negotiating LA freeways, we should be knocking on your door in the early afternoon of February 5th. Might even call when we are back from Costa Rica, on Sunday.
Fondestos from Lady Dar to you both. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Mathilde, at The Shrimp Hole; Gorgeous driftwood; best shot, such as it is, of retreating turtle! Thanks Peter and Lynnie, Look forward to spending time with you.
