Attic Inspection, Let it Snow, Let it Snow Blues: Wednesday, January 18th!

If I knew of something that could serve my nation but would ruin another, I would not propose it to my prince, for I am first a man and only then a Frenchman ... because I am necessarily a man, and only accidentally am I French. -Montesquieu, philosopher, lawyer, and writer (18 Jan 1689-1755)

Hi Patrizzio, That is sad to read how the situation changed for you. I remember how you were looking forward to your big trip to Europe when we visited you. I believe that everything goes well with your family in next months. Health is simply the most important thing, everything else is not so important.

Here in Bardejov we have now real winter. We had big influence of arctic wind from north las week and the temperature was below -20 celsius degrees last week. Last weekend we got a lot of snow and now people can fully enjoy all the winters activities. Who like it is very happy because previous winter was poor for snow.

The most interesting thing that happened last days was that we hosted Slovak National Radio on one of our hike. I am happy for that because it is a good promotion for our region. And I thing that I also did a promotion for snowshoes as I am probably the only one who walk around Bardejov in snowshoes not only with cross-country ski. Enjoy the winter! Katarina

Hi All; So far we have me, Patrick and Jos for tonight. Do we have a fourth? Pam Hi Card Sharks! As far as I know, Olga Polga is busy with her sister and Naramata Pamela is at a concert this evening so our only hope is for Ace of Spades Michaelo to be the fourth! Let us know if you are planning to put your bridge wits to work, Michaelo, and we'll plan accordingly! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Guys, sorry for the late reply, I was so busy. Yes, I am coming with Jos, unless Jos has changed something. Cheers. Mike Great! There is parking for visitors at the 3rd speed bump. There is one stall straddling the 3rd speed bump and another stall just before the 3rd speed bump. Pam Hi Summerlandians and former Summerlandian! Could you swing by and pick me up about 6:10 pm? If possible, that would be wunerful. Look forward to more Chicago scoring!!! Cheers, Patrizzio! Will do, get ready at 6:15 please. Cheers. Mike

Hey Pat, sorry it's been a while since we last talked, I've been busy with a new co-op job and other things, some of which I will tell you about later in this email. Before I go on though, DO NOT POST THIS EMAIL ON YOUR BLOG! Ok, with that out of the way...

How are you recovering from the surgery? To be honest, you looked like a piece of crap (more than usual) the last time we saw you, but I'm not sure if that's because of the surgery or your "inner beauty" showing more as you age. Hopefully you haven't been too much trouble for Corinne (she already had enough to deal with when you had a healthy hip).

Otherwise, hope life in the Okanagan is good, did you guys get the same snow and blistering cold that we got down here? It was awful, only to be replaced by torrential rain now, but I guess one doesn't live in Vancouver for the sunny weather. Thank you again for having us when we came up back in September, your new home is lovely and it is always a pleasure to raid your scotch cabinet.
That's all for now, thank you for hearing me out, and sorry again for not writing to you sooner. I heard from Pat jr., aka Ms. Oslo, that Chloe has my sunglasses and that there's a scotch interest on it for every day/week/month that she has to hold onto it, I'll make sure to pick it up soon. What's her phone number that I can reach her at? Happy Chinese New Year, it is the year of the cock, your favorite year ; ) Please send my regards to Corinne and the two pussycats Take care and DO NOT POST THIS EMAIL ON YOUR BLOG! VL

Hi Vittorino! How wonderful to hear from you in spite of the censorship! Don't worry, I've only posted the most intimate details! Rest assured, I would never do that! Both Lady Dar and I were more than delighted to see you and Patrizzio, The Younger, and Jessica. Thank you for taking the time from your obviously busy weekend to spend time with us. Plan on longer next time! You can reach Chloë at this number so collect your sun glasses as I need the malt levy!

It is always good to have a bit of plan but life is far too, too unpredictable to be certain that what you might have charted is the best route. Don't be risk adverse, don't be too comfortable. Don't worry about what others will think. Break norms. Enjoy everything. Enjoy each day. Enjoy the grey skies and the crowded bus. Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy! Strive to do so, always remembering that such enjoyment never comes, in the first instance, at the expense of others, whether emotional or financial or material. See how easy it is? Life in three small steps. A guaranteed recipe for success from Patrizzio's malt cabinet! All the very best dear Vittorino. Stay well. Be strong. Onward! Fight!!! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Jon! A pleasure to meet you yesterday. Thanks so much for a very informative and helpful session. Much appreciated. On the matter of the tree you hope to have removed, at some point, I would certainly be keen to take any, or all, the wood. Again, only if you have no other ways to dispose of it, to your own advantage. As you did mention, if it is possible to have it in rounds, at least for the largest limbs and trunk, that would be terrific. Otherwise, I have a friend with a chain-saw. I would probably spit the rounds at you place, if you don't mind, simply for ease of transportation. From past experience, these rounds can be extremely heavy and awkward to lift/move, depending on tree size, of course.

Again, if this is convenient and agreeable to you, just let me know when Paul Bunyan comes to town! I will be here until early March when I will be in Vancouver for a little less than a week. Otherwise I am ready, almost at a moment's notice! Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!
Great: I’ll get back to you when I know when the tree is coming down. Best regards, Jon

Dear Patrick OMG what a cat!  Duke is so cute though I am sure it is really hard to be toooo mad at him!  His jumping though is quite amazing and certainly worrisome given your wonderful glass pieces and pewter.  His name should really be Evil Knievel.  You need to get a water gun.

Had a lovely dinner with Ruyun Staiger and Louise Ghoussoub last night at La Notte (small Italian restaurant on Dunbar--just off 17th and Dunbar).  Ruyun is here from Montreal visiting her mother and son Spencer.  She is well but her husband Peter is not great.  He has lymphoma and has had several years of treatments all leaving him very weak and certainly a shadow of his former self.  Ruyun is managing as best she can.  It is sobering when your partner is extremely ill and with little hope of a real recovery.  Changes everything.

Tonight the Vancouver Children's Literature Roundtable its Celebrate BC event at Creekside Community Centre celebrating BC authors--wine snacks etc.

Haven't quite figured out exactly what PUSH events I will go to.  Colin isn't keen so trying to tee things up with a neighbor.  Will go to see Love and Innovation at the Frederick Wood Theatre on Saturday.  Did see Tomson Highway's the (Post) Mistress at Capilano University last Saturday.  It was very interesting "musical".  I don't think it will be exceptionally popular but he captures small town Ontario pretty well and managed to make one think about love and life.

Heard from Tip last week.  She is ok.  She and Jim had been away for 6 months in Thailand.  Jim returns to Bangkok today.  She will remain until April and then will head back to Thailand as well.  She and Jim are still in morning regarding Pat's death--not sure it will be possible to really recover.

Anyways, have a relatively quiet day today.  All our ordering is complete for the year. Take care and hope you have a great time exercising today.  I have tried out yoga for the first time and I must say I think it is great for one's body.  Not sure why I didn't try it earlier. Cheers Jo-Anne

Hi Jo-Anne! While we don't have a water pistol we do have a spray bottle. It's very effective, inasmuch as we don't even have to spray him, just pick up the bottle and he skedaddles! Trouble is, it hasn't changed his behaviour, yet!

Not sure that I know Ruyun our Louise but sounds as if Ruyun has a difficult situation, indeed. Even more difficult for Tip and Jim, as you mention. On another, similar note, I learned of the death of Laurenda Daniells. Did you know her? Perhaps not as I cannot recall if she was retired before you came to UBC.

On a brighter note,
last night we were off to Theo's for a free steak dinner. In fact, the evening was well worth while. Food was excellent and we ordered a bottle of 2013 Syrah from C.C. Jentsch Cellars, 13.8%, just south of Oliver. Enjoyed it immensely. Have not yet been to winery so must do so. Presentation was most informative and well-delivered. IAS a result, we decided to have a free-home inspection and Nick Reimer, one of chaps who presented material, came by at 9:00 am this morning. He inspected our attic and crawl space and was pleased, overall, with what he found. Nevertheless, we do agree that improvements could be made. One of the products is space-age, (Literally developed for NASA space craft.), insulation and we've decided we will have our attic "wrapped". Will wait to do crawl space as we'd like to have on-demand hot water installed but need to wait until ground thaws. Difference between $26 or a couple of thousand for gas pipe to be brought to house, from back lane, if we proceeded tomorrow, for example.

No real rush on crawl space so it seems more practical to leave floor joists, etc., exposed until piping necessary for gas and water lines is installed, otherwise certain sections of the new insulation will have to be removed and/or opened up in order for on-demand work to proceed. Finances also play a goodly part in decision, as I'm sure you can appreciate.

Must away to ride the stationary bike as I'm off to bridge this evening. Lady Dar has her Book Club so she won't be playing cards. Glad you are back with yoga. Cora Lee really likes the yoga instructor, Tasha, she has found here. How did Colin's injection go? Take care of yourself, dear friend. Fondestos from Lady Dar to you both! Cheers, Patrizzio! Hi Katarina! Thank you for your kind words and understanding. Much appreciated. Very pleased to learn of your media coverage. Wonderful indeed! You really have experienced an Arctic cold snap! All the very best. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Dear friends, A last plea for help. As you probably know, there is very important meeting tomorrow in Summerland: Public Information Presentation & Q&A Session, 7:00PM Thursday, January 19th, 2017 at the Centre Stage Theater (9518 Main Street). If you are in the neighborhood, please come to this meeting to show your support. We all will be very grateful.

We have a significant number of signatures now on our petition and some very emotional comments attached to it, especially from older people: They all advocate staying active and independent longer; they support development with easy walking distance access to downtown; they wish to shop locally and support local businesses, not live in isolation and dependent on the schedule of a shuttle service; they want to save our 100 year old hatchery supporting our Okanagan economy with $100M every year, and last but not least they want to protect our agricultural land.

Our website: <sensiblesummerland.com> Again, please support this cause. Please send this email on to others to spread the word. Thank you very much! On behalf of Summerlanders for Sensible Development, Aart & Jos Dronkers
Hi SSD! All the best for tonight's meeting! We'll be supporting you, in absentia! Onward!! Fight!!! Cheers, Lady Dar and Patrizzio!
