More Sidewalks and then Time to Hit the Pool Blues: Sunday, January 19th!

Take long walks in stormy weather or through deep snows in the fields and woods, if you would keep your spirits up. Deal with brute nature. Be cold and hungry and weary. -Henry David Thoreau, naturalist and author (1817-1862)

Hi Just re re - reading this email! I love the pictures of Cloe and the art! I’m presently in Virginia visiting the grandson! Unlike you I only have 10 days. I’m holding him (Benson) with one hand while I write this - I was thinking about you and I thought I’d would say a quick hi! He just cleared the shelf - lol Talk to you soon I hope! Love Rhoda

Hello Smitten Grandmother and Shelf-Clearing Boy! Wonderful to hear from you and Destructo-Lad! Great snaps. Although you are not home, am wondering if Cape Breton suffered from same or similar snowfall as Newfoundland. Coincidentally, less than a week before blizzard hit the province Flamin' and Sarge were here, in Penticton, with close friends, Peggy and Wayne Connors, from St John's, who were flying home a few days later. They are probably still digging themselves out! Stay well, Ski. Best wishes to you and The Great Ronaldo. Cheers for now, Patrizzio!

Another good day on the road.  Yikes, cock fights.  Shades of going to the bull fights, (was it Guadalajara?).  The kind of thing that you only want to experience once (if that!) Baja2020 — Day 13 (Jan. 19) Santa Rosalía  —> Mulegé (63km) (Note: We changed our schedule somewhat, foregoing a day off in Santa Rosalía and instead carrying on to Mulegé in order to split the subsequent planned one day, 135 km ride (Mulegé —> Loreto) into two days as follows: Mulege —> Playa Buenaventura (Day 14 ~40km) —> Loreto (Day 15 ~95km).)

Day 13: The strong thermal winds of the night before had died down overnight and it was a beautiful sunny morning for our ride to Mulegé.  It warmed up as the ride progressed, especially as there was a bit of a climb early on. Nice riding but no free lunch as there were the typical rolling hills along the way and a pretty steep climb (and fun drop!) toward the end. (FYI, Hedley’s Theorem of Elevation states that metres climbed always exceeds metres dropped, even when start and finish are at the same elevation. This have been conclusively proven several times on this trip and is an empirically reproducible phenomenon.) I digress. The riders enjoyed the beautiful desert countryside with lots of flowers along the way.

We arrived in Mulegé shortly after noon. We checked into Hotel Hacienda Mulege and relaxed in the courtyard having some beer and chips and talking with the nice young hostess, Naomi, who told us she had recently spent a month in Vancouver on an English language immersion program, staying in a homestay on or near King Edward Blvd.

There was a terrific din coming from outside the hotel — lots of talking, shouting and endless cock-crowing. We were informed that there was cockfighting next door and that it would go on into the night. Oh, Joy! After showering, Don, John, Ken, Mark and Tony, marched off in alphabetic order to drive the van down the coast and scout out the beaches, eateries, watering holes and possibilities for camping the following night. Ross spent the afternoon  watching cockfighting — brutal and noisy pretty much sums it up.

As an aside, Mark’s tire went flat — at the hotel, fortunately — due to a thorn, something that we had been cautioned to expect. The lads came back and those interested had plenty of time time observe cockfighting, apparently popular in much of the world. Festivities wrapped up around 2 a.m.
