From Light Showers to Deep-Water Walking Blues: Thursday, April 20th!

History may be read as the story of the magnificent rearguard action fought during several thousand years by dogma against curiosity. -Robert Lynd, writer (20 Apr 1879-1949)

Up to still more steady rain this overcast morn. Even the cats are not particularly pleased with the precipitation, although Duke is making the best of the inclement weather, investigating the downspout near the front door, a continuation of his on-going interest in the bathroom faucets. Both he and Etta now position themselves near our two sinks and rivet their attention on the spouts when we brush our teeth. Has become a nightly ritual for them and I must admit, Dear Reader, that if the hour is late, and I'm quite sleepy, I almost dread having to floss afterwards.

Spring arrived early in our garden this year
Duke is obsessed, and I do mean obsessed, with trying to hook the floss away from me. Ever since he has become a dental hygienist I've sustained a few nicks and scratches, so quick is he with his needle-tipped paws. I have even taken to becoming a "closet" flosser, moving to the guest bathroom to attend to my dental care. Nevertheless, he waits outside the door and gives me such a reproving look, when I emerge, that I'm swamped with guilt for denying him his play with the used floss. I usually wind one end around a finger and he chases the remaining length of thread wherever I drag it along the floor.

He has become quite adept at managing to hold it in his mouth but of course it slips through his teeth, much to his obvious consternation and exasperation, whenever I give it a slight tug. For her part, far milder mannered Etta is content to watch his gyrations, lunges and pounces, preferring to perform her own, thorough, nightly toilette as he dashes after the infuriating floss. From now on I may well have to wear Kevlar garden gloves and a hockey goalie's face-mask when flossing. If Hannibal the Cannibal could have perfect teeth, why not me?

We have already started picking fresh strawberries!

Tris helping grandad in the greenhouse
Hi Patrick! Thank you for your Easter card and belated Easter greetings! We were away in Southampton over Easter having had Tristan down here in Cornwall the week previous during his half term. Marnie is on a sabbatical from the university until September working on her Phd so we take Tristan when he is on school holidays so that she can crack on. She is not sure that she will be able to finish her thesis to Phd level by September and has said she is not planning on extending it another year so may have to content herself with an M Phil.

I'm sure I saw an Alligator there!
Life continues as usual here and time is passing all too quickly! Gayle and I have been busy helping with Spring events at Trelissick Estate and we work in the Trelissick house cafe once a week. Planning on going up to York for a few days next month but other than that have no plans to go away this summer. With the greenhouse it is difficult to get away during the growing season since getting someone to cover the watering regime becomes a problem ! We are cruising in September with Maur and Bill but would have harvested most of the stuff by then. Think if we plan a trip next summer I won't bother planting up the greenhouse that year.

Spuddy hasn't been that well of late. Wouldn't eat and lost quite a bit of weight. Vet did blood test etc which all came back normal so suggested a scan if things didn't improve. He has over the last week started eating again, all be it less than usual, and has gained back .2 of a kilo. Of course in human terms he is a very old man!!

We have had a reasonable Spring. Little rain and quite warm during the day but chilly evenings. Have been doing a fair bit of walking, coastal and countryside, to take advantage of the dry weather. Perfect walking temperatures. Have quite a few chores to do on the house but keep putting all that stuff on the back burner. Doesn't get the priority it used to! Best wishes to Corrine and Chloe ( I assume she was with you over Easter) Derek
