Gallagher Lake Oliver KVR Blues: Good Friday, April 14th!

Many people consider the things government does for them to be social progress but they regard the things government does for others as socialism. -Earl Warren, jurist (1891-1974)

Happy Easter to you and Corinne. We are celebrating Easter with Mags and her family in Terrace. We are bringing the ham and the games and gifts for winners of the games to dinner at her house on Sunday. We really enjoy Mags three grandchildren so are pleased to be included in the evening. And yes, we enjoy Mags and her children too.

Not much else new with us. Returned from rainy Vancouver Tuesday night. My word it was grey and wet for the whole week we were in Vancouver except the day we were leaving. You could feel people’s energy in the air with the sun shining. Since coming home we seem to be busy doing I’m not sure what. Gerry was at the golf course today as they had a work crew come and get things in order to open tomorrow. Christy Clark came through on a tour and so we organized people being out to meet her. I dare say I can’t believe people don’t like her. She visited Kitimat, Terrace and Rupert.

We are still working on our renovation but when we were in Vancouver we were able to order lighting and the glass and rail to set the glass in to replace the wall we took out. Sure makes it harder when you can’t get the materials you want here but we were pleased with the people we dealt with in the big city.

Stacee and Sean had to put Stacee’s dog to sleep last weekend and they were heartbroken. We were pretty sad too and think of Luda often. They are off to Panama for a couple of weeks tomorrow and I am so glad they are getting away as they both have been putting in long hours at work plus the stress of having to put Luda down. Well that dear Patrick is about all I can think of to say. Cheers, Dawn

Hadn't expected to ride quite as early, or at all, today as yesterday's forecast had suggested numerous showers. However, was pleasantly surprised to see that AccuWeather seeemd to have revised their prediction, showing but a number of showers around 3:00 pm only. This being the case I decided I'd better hit the road sooner than later so after two delish cheese and onion sandwiches I suited up and hit the road. Given that wind was out of the S at between 8-13 kph, between 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, I thought I'd make for Oliver, not having ridden there this year.

Started off with my basic "starter", down to PTC/Lakeshore/Riverside and then back to Burns and onto Government. Quite a few other well-kitted out riders on the roads, a number of groups as well as pairs and singles, like me. Eastside was most pleasant with nary a ripple on Skaha and so enjoyed the lovely morning as I made my way into OK Falls. Did the Stag's Hollow Loop before taking 97 and just as I was passing Tickleberry's, the well-known ice-cream spot in town, I came up behind a couple of other riders. The man waved me on, indicating I should pass them but just as I was about to do so, he changed his mind and they both accelerated and left me behind.

The woman was wearing a bright yellow jersey so I could follow their progress as we rode south. I was hoping, at one point to catch them and draft behind but that was not to be, although I could see that the chap was pulling away from his companion so she wasn't able to draft either. Whether she was slowing down or he was speeding up, I couldn't tell, but on the slight ride just before the highway drops closer to the shore of Vaseux, they had stopped for a drink and I whizzed by them, fully expecting them ,based on their earlier pace, to pass me before I reached Gallagher Lake. Not so so I put them out of my mind and continued to make for Oliver.

Once there I only had only logged 60 km. My odometre read 40 km when I left OK Falls and the highway sign indicated Oliver was 22 km ahead. However, as mentioned, my GPS suggested distance was but 20 km so I decided I's do a short dipsy-doodle, on Fairview Road, up towards the golf course to make sure I had enough distance to give me my intended goal, (100+ km), for the day.  Pleased to find that the roughest part of this street had been nicely resurfaced so I was cycling past Von Bingen's place. Noticed signs of the renovations she had mentioned she was doing but no sign of Hildegard herself. After I'd clocked 2.5 km I turned around and headed back into town.

Once there, I rode the block or so to where the KVR crosses Fairview and took it, all the way north, along the river back to 97. Most pleasant and I passed numerous dog walkers and families out enjoying Good Friday. Took the exit off the KVR into the small parking lot beside the highway and, up ahead, I noticed the yellow jersey clad rider as I was crossing the bridge deck. Since I needed to loop back onto Tucelnuit before rejoining 97 my "companions" were soon out of sight again.

Had been peppered with a light rain when I entered Gallahgher Lake, on way south, and same happened as I approached this tiny burg on return leg. More of a sun shower although the wind was more of a factor, especially on the slight uphill grade here. Had imagined I have the wind behind me but later learned that the direction had changed, Dear Reader! Was now a fairly strong cross wind, out of the W at 19 kph, gusting to 37 kph, so no wonder I struggled at times.

Still, was pleased to see that my calculations were bang on and I rode into OK Falls with 85 km on the clock. Funnily enough, when I rode past Tickleberry's I noticed that the two riders I'd dogged for the Oliver loop had stopped and were enjoying something. Not for me, of course, Dear Reader, as the The Dreaded Burning Ground would not permit me to interrupt my unspoiled outing and I made for Eastside. Ride back to Penticton went well as the strong cross-wind persisted and actually helped, more than hindered, all the way to the bottom of South Main where my odometre read 99 km. Having calibrated the distance to home, from here, I knew I could easily add on a couple more kilometres, by dipsy-doodling past Government, on Dawson, as far as Dartmouth, so that when I rolled past Burns I only needed a short swing up and back, on Braid, to give me the distance I wanted for the day. Had hoped the AVG would be over 22 kph but Aeolus had other ideas. That being said, happy trails, all in all. Cheers! Map and Stats for ride:
